Chapter 49
"Shut up, Endeavour." I eventually snapped as we made our way back to the surface. He had been grumbling and complaining the whole way up, something about Todoroki needing to do better. "Todoroki has been putting his all into this, just like the rest of us. It isn't too late to put you back."
"Get your child in line, Eraserhead." He growled. "Before I do." My eyes, cold and unwavering, scanned him meticulously. Without his stupid beard of flames, he looked quite pathetic. And even Mineta could probably take him in a fight while he was in such a bad condition. Cuts and bruises and marks littered his skin, and his hands were blue. Despite the quirk suppressing handcuffs, the League had submerged his hands in icy water for long periods of time. I felt no sympathy.
"Aw, so scared of me that you need to get my parents to step in? I'll freeze you right here. Don't test me, little man."
"Little-" He spluttered, probably more offended than he'd ever been before. Good. It's about time someone put that jerk in his place. Todoroki looked at me, his eyes soft and his smile telling me that he found the whole thing just as funny as Kat did.
Kat was outright laughing, by the way.
"Shut up, Enji." Hawks tutted, saying his first words of the whole ordeal. He had circles under his eyes, and his usually large and magnificent wings were but stubs of their former glory.
"Guys, do you have the main four?" I heard Yaomomo's voice through Kat's earpiece.
"Yep!" Mido beamed. "We're on our way back topside now."
"And we'll be one down at this rate." I grumbled under my breath, causing Kat to snort.
"Please do not be so blase." Iida scolded. "We are still in the thick of it. Stay vigilant!"
"You're so uptight." Kami whined. "Half the class has saved a bunch of heroes in this building alone. And we don't even know how many the other half saved."
"There's another building?" Father groaned as he took a step forward and winced. I frowned and put a hand on his arm, but he brushed me off and carried on walking, hardening his expression.
"Yes, just next door." Iida informed him. "This building has less heroes, but it's everyone either higher up the ranks, such as All Might and Hawkes," Endeavour made a noise of anger at not being mentioned. "Or people who are important to the League's mission, such as you and Present Mic."
"What is their mission?" Hawkes huffed. "I don't really appreciate being swept up like a leaf in the wind and dumped in here with no idea why." Everyone turned to me.
"You're so right." Mina swooned, too star-struck by seeing her new favourite hero in the flesh. Somehow, I knew she was considering asking him to sign something.
"I- Uh." I could feel my face burning under everyone's eyes. "Well they want to destroy the hero society. They want to watch it crumble and burn, only for their band of misfits to walk out of the flames and become the people everyone turns their eyes to. They want to be on top, and they want all of the power that comes with that. It's so they can change society into one where they won't be discriminated against or put down because of their quirks. From my understanding, anyway." I muttered the last sentence, ducking my head bashfully. I didn't think that now was the time to have the whole 'they want a world where they're accepted debate'.
"Ooh, I want to be all powerful!" Kat mocked. "What an original villain goal."
"Well, it's a good job we don't seek your approval, Katsuki Bakugo." A deep, booming voice echoed around us. My hand grabbed onto Kat's arm. "If I did, I'd be heartbroken."
"It's him." Mido squeaked, his face devoid of any colour aside from his freckles.
"A pleasure to finally meet you, ninth." My free arm shot out in front of Mido protectively, and I prayed that nobody would notice how much I was trembling.
"Oh, now now, my dear. No use in starting up your quirk. I'm not here to antagonise you."
"Come out and fight me!" Kat growled.
"I'm not here for you, either. Just him." A dark shadow shot out towards Mido. And luckily, despite being told not to, I had been using my quirk. I shoved the greenette out of the way and braced myself for an impact that never came.
"You'll have to go through us first." Todoroki's low voice spat as the room became a few degrees cooler.
"Oh, you children are going to be problems, aren't you?"
"They aren't called my problem children for nothing, villain." Father stood up straight and instinctively went to grab his scarf, only to clutch at nothing. All for One laughed.
"If you're all geared up for a fight, who am I to deny you?"
"What are you-" Iida began, only to be cut off by a syringe on a long tube flying towards him.
"Aw! Don't dodge! I want to taste you." A manic voice giggled from the shadows. Toga stepped out, closely followed by Twice and Dabi. My eyes locked in on the dark-haired man, narrowing angrily.
"Hi, Hata! Shut up you moron, she's not our friend anymore!" Twice waved before turning his head and hissing at himself.
"Where's your crusty boss?" Kat asked, flexing his fingers, ready for a fight. "I need to teach him a fucking lesson for putting his raggedy-ass fingers on my girlfriend."
"This is your boyfriend!" Toga gasped. "He's just as cute as you are, Hata! I'm gonna drink all of his yummy blood!"
"Yeah, where is Shigaraki?" I curled my shaking hands into fists to distract myself from Toga's comments. "Is he too scared to face me?" A shiver made its way up my spine as fingers ghosted over my cheek. A body pressed against my back and a voice whispered in my ear.
"You're the one who should be scared." Letting instinct do its job, I spun around and straightened my arm until my fist made heavy contact with Shigaraki's face. And then kept going. My eyes widened. I opened my hand and watched the thick, grey goop drop through my fingers. Toga cackled.
"That's not very manly of you." Kiri frowned, punching his fists together and activating his quirk. In the corner of my eye, I could see Father slowly pushing Dad behind him and Hawks. Endeavour was the only one not in a fighting stance. Arrogant pr-
"I don't believe it could be called 'manly' to assault the young master. Two times." Kurogiri spoke calmly, appearing next to Dabi.
"He deserved it. Both times." I spat.
"That hurts. Not as much as your breakup slap did. But it stings a little." Shigaraki rasped, stepping out of a portal next to me.
"Are you real this time?"
"Excited to see me?" When he received no response, Shigaraki opened his arms smugly. "Why don't you find out?"
"As much as I'd love to, Twice leaves stains." I sniffed. He lifted his hand up to Father and slowly removed it from his face to reveal his wide eyes and crazed smile.
"Then allow me."
"I don't fucking think so!" Kat roared, throwing an explosion before Shigaraki could even finish lunging towards me.
And that spurred the action.
"Team!" Iida didn't have to tell us twice. Not when Dabi, who had been silently watching over us with an eagle-like stare, was making his way towards my parents.
"Oh no you don't. You're dead." I snarled, dodging Kaminari's lightning as he engaged with Spinner. Wait, where did everyone else come from? I glanced at Kurogiri, who was standing calmly at the back of the room.
"Oh yeah? Then don't take your fucking eyes off of me!" Dabi cackled, throwing his arm out and sending a wave of blue fire my way. I rolled out of the way, feeling the heat as I did. As I stood back up, I couldn't stop the laughter that bubbled up in my throat. I wasn't scared, I was smiling.
There!
That brief moment of hesitation. That tiny little throw. That was my opening. I darted forward and grabbed Dabi's collar, slamming us both into the wall. He grunted.
"You are going to fucking pay for what you did to my father. Give me one good reason why I shouldn't freeze you here and tear you apart staple by fucking staple." One hand ran absently along his cheek, bumping over each metal addition to his skin. His bright blue eyes darkened.
"Because then I wouldn't be able to do this. This is what you get for getting in my way." He pressed his hand against my face, like we were doing a joint Shigaraki impression. Instinctively, I let go of his shirt and grabbed his hand, allowing him to punch me in the gut with the other. "Burn, bitch." He hissed, grabbing my waist and heating his hand.
"Getting in your way?" I gasped, clenching my fist around his wrist as I tried not to yell out. "What the fuck did I ever do to you?"
"You are so fucking perfect." Dabi spat, leaning in close. "The heir to a villain empire, a versatile quirk, pretty, heroic-"
"Aw! A compliment? From my favourite burnt chicken nugget?" I snorted. "I'm touched." He snarled for a moment.
Before punching me in the face.
Oh, you're on.
I took a deep breath. Support course, I am putting SO much faith into you right now! I slammed my head forward, feeling my wire helmet impact against Dabi's face. The visor cracked from the force. Dabi let go, stumbling slightly. I used the gap to move backwards.
"Oh no you don't!" He lit his hand on fire, the blue dancing beautifully in the grey room. "It should have been me! Instead, Shigaraki became so fixated on you, you bitch! We were going to work together to take them down one by one!"
"What?" I blanched. "All of this over a fucking crush?! You can have him! I don't fucking want him!" Dabi's reply was a wave of flames hurtling towards me.
"It's not a crush!" I threw myself out of the way, grumbling.
"This isn't the time or place." Flicking out my hand mirrors, I threw some around the area, hoping to trap Dabi long enough that he'd wear himself out. If I tried to freeze him, he'd just throw fire at me and cover his reflection. I'd already gotten close once; he wouldn't let that happen again on any terms other than his own.
"What's wrong?" Dabi mocked. "Don't you want matching scars with your daddy? Or maybe I could make you match everyone's favourite dual-quirked hero's son?"
He's goading you, Hinami. Save losing it for when he's in your hands.
I took a deep breath and stepped forward, falling into the abyss.
When I jumped back up again, Dabi was cursing.
"Not this fucking trick again-"
"Boo." I whispered, grabbing the back of Dabi's coat and yanking it with one hand, pressing my other against his forehead and pushing him to the ground. He tumbled backwards, not expecting the sudden movement. With a growl, he threw his hands upwards. I laced my fingers with his.
"What are you-"
"You activate your quirk, and I'll activate mine." He snarled below me.
"What's your useless quirk going to do now? All of your mirrors are on the floor." His hands began to heat up, a telltale sign. So I did the same. "Wait, what? What is that?" He squirmed as my heat matched his. My hands felt sweaty already, but I didn't let up. I put a boot on his chest.
"That? Oh, nothing special. Just my secret weapon."
"All for One gave you a boost-" I leant forward and hissed.
"You don't know what he gave me." My hands burst into blue flames and I saw Dabi biting his inner cheek. "But you do know that you pissed me the fuck off. You messed with the wrong bitch."
"I thought you were meant to be a hero!" He bellowed as the flames engulfed his arms, burning the both of us.
"I am. Just not for you. This is for my father, you fucking wannabe!" I yelled. I'm ashamed to admit that I considered scorching him with his own flames until he was soundless. But a nearby explosion blinded me for a moment, and when I felt Dabi shift, trying to use my sudden distraction as an out, I drove my heel into his forehead. His eyes rolled back and his body went limp. I dropped his hands and hurriedly pressed a finger against his neck.
He was alive.
I looked at the scene around me and my eyes settled on Kurogiri, who had still decided to stay out of the fighting. He was the League's lifeline, their sure fire way to escape. So It had to be him. I still had about thirty seconds with Dabi's quirk so, although my hands were red and raw, I shifted my stance and held my hand in an O against my palm. Katsuki makes it look easy enough, right? Yelling a silent 'AP Shot!' in my head, I fired three fireballs in quick succession, aiming all of them at Kurogiri. They all hit him. And went through him.
"Wh-" He melted into a pile of grey sludge and panic set in my chest. "Heroes, the teleporter is-" I began to shout a warning, but found myself choking on something. It was liquid; thick and heavy. Was it blood? I had no injuries. Through my coughing, I could see the rest of the heroes doubling over too. Shigaraki gave Katsuki an open mouthed grin, letting black liquid spill out of mouth. The tendrils came alive and wrapped around him. The rest of the group followed suit. They started to disappear.
It was teleportation!
All for One had been in the shadows, watching on with interest.
"Hina, don't!" Kat burped, seeing my expression.
My legs moved of their own accord.
I threw myself forward, grabbing All for One's trouser leg as blackness overcame my vision and my body became weightless. I heard someone yell my name, but I had already disappeared.
