Chapter 31
When she entered her house, Hinami simply stood there for a while, taking it all in. Mic watched her, half amused and half confused.
"You okay, sweetie?"
"Hm? Oh! Yeah... Just..." A meow stopped her. She looked down to see a fat fluffy tabby cat rubbing happily on her leg. "Ramen!" He gladly jumped up into her arms, nuzzling her cheek lovingly. Mic smiled at them.
"He's missed you as much as we have."
As much as the couple wanted nothing more than to swamp her in love, Mic and Aizawa let Hinami spend the rest of the day in bed. They assumed she was tired after the whole ordeal and, honestly, she was.
Stepping in the house had been overwhelming. To be somewhere so familiar yet so distant, somewhere where all of her memories were cold, yet her heart felt so warm...
The dorms were even worse.
She wanted to get back to class as soon as she could, so moved back into the doors after just a few days. When she entered them, she was met with... mixed reactions.
Everyone looked up at her, the room growing silent other than the low rumble of whatever tv show some of them were watching.
"H-hi, Hinami." Kami said shakily, standing up and walking over to her. "How's... things?" She stared at him for a moment.
"You don't have to pretend, you know. You're scared of me."
"Scared isn't the right word." She nodded at his tentative response. As she went to walk off, she bumped into a hard chest.
"Hinami."
"Bakugo."
"It's nice to have you back. I knew you didn't betray us." Looking into each other's eyes, the pair shared a brief smile. But it still felt like someone had stabbed him. Without a word, she swept through the tense common room. As soon as she left, the bubble burst and talking overtook the room.
"She could have stayed to talk! I wanted to ask her questions!"
"Questions? I want an apology."
After a few moments, Katsuki tutted and announced loudly.
"Shut up you stupid extras. It's her first day back in the dorms. Let her have some rest before you swarm her." And with that, he also left to go upstairs, an uneasy feeling gnawing at him. She had called him Bakugo.
Meanwhile, up in her room, Hinami was sitting on her bed, head in hands. There was a strange, heavy feeling pressing down on her shoulders and a tight feeling in her chest. Her head was pounding. Everything was so confusing.
Her memories of this place were fuzzy and distant, but distinctly cold. So cold. Just like everything else was. Yet, stepping into the common room, she didn't feel out of place. It felt right to be there. Well, aside from the critical glares of her classmates. Their looks made it a little easier to believe that they didn't like her.
Except for that blonde one-
"Guess who." A scratchy voice said, as two cold hands covered her eyes, not touching her face.
"Tomura! What are you doing here?"
"I missed you. And I wanted to check in on you. You didn't exactly leave on good terms with your class."
"Yeah. That's pretty clear now..."
"What do you mean?" Shigaraki sat down on her bed and she leant on his shoulder. He tensed at her touch and quickly relaxed again, but she didn't miss it.
"Well, I was unsure at first. I couldn't believe that my class really hated me. But they all looked so hostile..." Lightly placing his hand over Hinami's, Shigaraki opened his mouth to respond, but couldn't find the words. She doubted her memories? Was Kyo's quirk wearing off? Instead, he just leant down and gently kissed her forehead. A small smile tugged at her lips.
Knock knock knock.
"Open up, shit head."
The pair looked at each other for a second before Hinami got up and opened the door ever so slightly.
"Yes?"
"I- uh. Are you- uh-"
"Yes, I'm fine, thanks. Bye." As she went to close the door, he held it open.
"Is that it?"
"I think so."
"Hinami I... I want to talk to you. What happened?"
"You know what happened." She replied coldly. He looked a little surprised.
"Why are you being like that?" He yelled before catching himself. "I was sticking up for you this whole time, y'know. I never doubted you for a second. So can you at least let me in? I might consider giving you one of those hugs you like so much-"
"No."
"What?"
"I don't want you to come in, I don't want to talk about it, I don't want a hug." She said firmly. She could see the gears turning in Katsuki's head as he pressed his lips together tightly, wondering how to respond. After a tense few moments, he simply turned away and entered the room opposite hers.
"What was that about?" Shigaraki asked, despite knowing exactly what it was about. He tried to keep his expression clear.
"I don't know. Maybe he feels bad about what happened?"
"Maybe." She sat back down next to him and leant on his shoulder. He couldn't have scripted it better! Now that stupid clingy blonde would stop trying to play with his Hinami. "Well, hey. Forget about them. I'm here now."
About a week passed, but that strange conflicted feeling never left Hinami's head. Everyone was, understandably, regarding her with caution; keeping her at arm's length. Not that she minded much. She had Shigaraki after all. He visited almost every night.
So why did she feel so alone?
She was currently in class. PE, to be more precise. All Might was picking out pairs for sparring. He wasn't trying to hide the fact that he was leaving her until last. She felt a little sorry for her family. They had been trying her best to reconnect with her, to make her comfortable and happy. But she just couldn't accept their love without guilt.
"That just leaves Kaminari and Hinami." Kaminari looked over at her nervously, but she didn't even look back up at him.
"J-just don't knock me out this time." He laughed nervously. She simply nodded slowly. A few pairs sparred, one pair at a time, five minutes each. Watching them, Hinami felt a little nervous. They were all so good, and some of them were pretty brutal. How did she even survive?
Next, it was her turn.
Kaminari was obviously trying very hard, but Hinami simply didn't have it in her. She dodged all of the attacks with relative ease, but made no attempt to attack, or even use her quirk. Her regular one, anyway. Her body tingled pleasantly with each boosted movement of her secret. The rest of the class watched on, unsure of how to feel. They knew that she was holding back, but nobody wanted to guess why. They were also glad for Kaminari's sake. Maybe a win against Hinami would boost his confidence.
Meanwhile, in the LoV base, the group were bickering as usual. Nobody could quite pinpoint how it started, but Twice had pissed off Dabi, Toga stood up for Twice, Compress tried to calm them, then Magne joined, then it was suddenly a civil war. Kurogiri sighed and simply continued to dry the used cups. Kyo, more than uncomfortable, decided to get up and make a break for the door. As he was attempting his escape, Spinner was sent hurling into him. The small boy fell over and hit his head on a wooden table with a loud bang. Everyone stopped instantly, silence filling the room as Shigaraki and Kurogiri rushed over to the unconscious boy. The rest of the group looked at each other, remembering Kyo's very important warning he had given them.
'You have to protect me in a fight. I can't fight, and if I get knocked unconscious, my quirk gets undone.'
All of a sudden, Hinami turned as pale as a ghost and stopped dead in her tracks.
