Chapter 27
Hinami stepped into, what she could only assume was, the LoV's base. There was a cheer. Her brain felt fuzzy, and she couldn't quite work out what was going on.
"Shig?"
"Kyo, what's going on?"
"Well, I only took over her mind briefly. I didn't have time to rework her entirely. You knew I wouldn't be able to do that until we got back."
"I thought it would last longer than this!" He hissed.
"It's not my fault that stupid blonde knocked her over and snapped her out of it!" He retorted, grabbing a bewildered Hinami's hand and pulling her over to a chair. "Sit." He ordered. Confused and alarmed, she obeyed. "Now look at my finger. You're going to take a quick nap." Almost involuntarily, she yawned. Just like before, everything around her slowly started to disappear.
When she opened her eyes, there were a lot of people staring at her, only two of which she recognised.
"Hi, Shig. What's going on?"
"You're at my home."
"Why?"
"It's a long story. Why don't you make friends with this lot? I know that Toga has been excited to meet you." He said gently, sounding very different to how he usually did when speaking to the LoV. A short blonde girl squealed excitedly.
"That's me! I can't believe you're here! I finally have a girl my age here!"
"We're the only girls?"
"There's one more. Big sis Magne!" She pointed to a woman.
"I like your skirt." Hinami said politely.
"Thank you! I'm still not used to wearing them. It feels... good." They shared a smile. Toga started talking again.
"This is Twice. He's a sweetheart! Spinner and Compress are out at the moment. That grumpy guy over there with Kurogiri is Dabi." She pointed to a dark-haired boy hunched over a beer and a person in a suit with purple wisps surrounding him and obscuring his silhouette.
"It's a pleasure to meet you all."
"She's so polite." Kurogiri pointed out amusedly. "Much better behaved than any of you already." Dabi rolled his eyes and reached behind the bar for another beer.
"A polite, soft little hero. Great."
"What the fuck did you just say to me?" Hinami snapped. Everyone looked at her with raised eyebrows, taken aback. Toga started laughing.
"You're going to be so much fun!"
"Before you do anything, let me show you where you can stay." Shigaraki held his hand out to Hinami. She noted the black gloves covering his last two fingers and vaguely remembered giving them to him. Her memory was fuzzy. Maybe she hit her head. With a small smile, she took his hand and stood up. As they left, she could feel everyone's eyes following her.
"What do you remember?" He asked.
"Uh... Not a lot. There was a fight with my classmates. They started attacking me..."
"Yes. I got you out of there. We already checked you for injuries. You don't have a concussion or anything." So she did hit her head. That would explain the fuzziness.
"That's good to hear..."
"You seem off."
"Yeah. Why did they do that?"
"A misunderstanding. They thought you went against their heroic beliefs."
"Did I?"
"You should." He danced around the question smoothly. "They're stupid."
"The class or the beliefs?" She asked coyly.
"This is your room. You don't have any stuff here; you've never stayed before." He opened a door to reveal a very plain looking room. The walls were off white, the floor was dark wood and had a blue rug. There was a bed in the corner with matching blue sheets. Compared to the dreary concrete of the bar, everything here was light and crisp and clean. "You like blue, right?"
"I do. Did you get it just for me?"
"I did." He said bashfully. She smiled, touched by his thoughtfulness. Then, she noticed the mirror hanging on the wall.
"I could go and get some of my things." She pointed to it. "I can go straight to my dorm or my bedroom at home." Shigaraki thought about it unsurely for a moment.
"Just grab some clothes maybe. Nothing noticeable. And be as quick as you can."
"Why do I need to be quick? It's hardly a dangerous mission." She laughed, approaching the mirror.
"I'll... miss you?" He replied quietly. What if she ran into one of her old classmates? Or her family? Or that stupid blonde boy?
"You're too sweet." Shigaraki breathed an internal sigh of relief. Not that he'd let the others know, but he had looked up 'how to be nice to the person you like'. Just to help with his plan, not because he liked her, of course!
"Whatever. Let me know when you're back." And he left the room, closing the door loudly.
She went to her home first. When she exited the mirror, the entire house was still and silent. Nobody was home. She got together a couple of items of clothing and some pens and paper to keep her occupied. The bulk of her stuff was at the dorms. Giving the room one last glance, she heard a meowing at the door. Cautiously opening it, she found a fluffy tabby cat sitting outside.
"Ramen?" She whispered. He meowed again. "I'm sorry. I can't stay. And I'm sure that Dad would notice you gone." She patted his head before gently closing him out and stepping back into the mirror.
The dorms would be tricky. There were more things to get back, such as her phone and charger (that she assumed she had left in school and hoped were returned to her dorm) and there would definitely be someone nearby.
After peeking in the room and seeing it empty, she decided it was safe to enter. She got together some clothes, her phone charger, makeup bag, then started looking for anything else. While looking, she came across a picture in a frame.
It was the class, halfway through doing a test. Kaminari had been dared to run to the front of the class and get a selfie with everyone. Aizawa was yelling at him and half of them had been caught off guard. Only her group of friends had been wise to the dare and were posing. She had thought the picture - and the memory - was so funny that she decided to print it and put it in a frame on her shelf.
She looked over it sadly.
Had these people really tried to fight her after a disagreement? Her finger found itself gently pressed against Aizawa's cheek. Breaking her out of her thoughts, her door clicked. She dropped the frame on her desk and dove under the bed. Two pairs of feet entered. One wearing smart black school shoes, the other with chunky red trainers.
"Are you sure your shoulders are okay?"
"Yes, Todoroki." Midoriya snapped. "Stop asking."
"I'm sorry..."
"I am too..." They stood in the middle of my room for a second, an awkward silence settling in.
"Todo... Do you really think that Hinami is a villain?" She held her breath, praying they wouldn't notice her as they approached the bed.
"I don't know. Her actions weren't very heroic. But she is also our friend."
"I hope she comes back." Midoriya sniffed. "Despite everything, I would give anything to hug her and have everything go back to normal."
"I believe that we all want her back, especially Bakugo. But we still aren't sure if it was her decision to go or not. Maybe she'll come back, maybe the pros will have to get her back. Maybe she-"
"Don't! Don't say..." A few things were dropped onto the bed heavily.
"But it might be something to think about..."
"I don't want to! Hinami is coming back! You're starting to sound like Nezu."
"That's not-" Todoroki exhaled. "You're right. I don't want to think the worst either. Let's... Let's go." Midoriya sniffed again.
"Yeah." And with that, they left.
Hinami counted to twenty before deeming it safe to come out again. Their conversation replayed in her head. She didn't even know where to start. The conversation didn't link up with what had happened in her head. Frowning, she wondered if the class had seen things from a different perspective.
After all, Shigaraki would never lie to her.
Shaking the thoughts out of her head for now, she looked on the bed. There was her phone, a bag with her school clothes and her school bag. She slipped her phone in her pocket, grabbed her stuff, and quickly entered the mirror dimension, not wanting to run into anyone else.
When she got back, she went back to the bar to find Shigaraki as she had been told to. Toga waved at her happily.
"What's with the frowny face, Hata?"
"Just felt weird going back, I guess." She lied. Toga engulfed her in a hug and nuzzled her cheek against Hinami's. Shigaraki beckoned her over. After prising the little blonde off of her, she sat down in between him and Dabi.
"Did you get everything okay?"
"Yeah..."
"What?"
"I just... Well... I trust you. You wouldn't lie to me, right?"
"Of course not!" He answered quickly. "Did something happen?"
"No." She responded just as fast, giving him her best smile. "I'm just confused about it all."
"Want a drink?" Dabi lifted his beer in the air.
"How many of those have you had?"
"Not enough. Want one or not."
"I'm not old enough to drink."
"Neither am I." Shigaraki shrugged, grabbing a bottle of whiskey and two glasses. "Never stopped me before."
"It should!"
"Just try a little?" He poured a large glass for him and put a little bit in Hinami's glass. She reluctantly brought the brown liquid to her lips and took the tiniest sip she could manage. It was surprisingly sweet, like honey, and burnt her throat slightly.
It wasn't too bad.
"See. Told you." Dabi smirked, taking a swig of his own drink.
"Shut up." She rolled her eyes, taking another little sip. Shigaraki watched on approvingly.
Hinami spent the rest of the night getting to know the members of the LoV and drinking as little as she could. However, by the end of the night, she felt light headed and giggly. Slowly, people decided to call it a night and go to bed. Shigaraki, Hinami, and Kurogiri were the last ones up.
"Let's get you to bed." Shigaraki said softly, pulling Hinami to her feet.
"No!" She let the word drag on. "I want to stay up! With you." He tutted and started walking. After saying a quick goodnight to Kurogiri, she pattered after him like a lost puppy.
"Why are you following me?"
"I- uh. I don't know?" He huffed and shook his head, but held the door to his room open for her when they got there. She immediately flopped onto his bed. He bent over so his face was over hers.
"You are one of the strangest people I've met. And that's really saying something."
"I have a question." He sat down next to her. "How comes you're the leader of the LoV? I mean, you're like two years older than me at most, right? That's a little young to be leading a group of villains."
"Well, technically my master is the real leader."
"Who's your master?"
"All for One."
"That's like All Might's quirk. But the opposite." She held her hands in front of them and crossed them over, trying to visualise it. Her brain wasn't as sharp now as it was sober. Shigaraki chuckled, putting Father on the bedside table.
"Yes. That pretty much sums it up. He's All Might's nemesis." Hinami propped herself up on her elbow.
"So is he your nemesis too?"
"Yes."
"Interesting..."
"That's enough for one night. Go to your own room."
"No."
"Now."
"Please?" She looked at him with big eyes and a slight pout. He growled.
"Fine." He had wanted her to leave him alone, but after seeing the smile that broke out on her face, he changed his mind. "What... uh... What animals do you like?" He asked stiffly, trying to remember the list of topics to talk about he had read. She giggled and rolled onto her back again.
"I think... Red pandas are cute. So are foxes. Oh! There are these things called fennec foxes that are little foxes with huge ears and they're adorable! What about you?" Shigaraki couldn't help but smile watching her. He laid down next to her and thought for a second.
"I don't know."
"That's a boring answer."
"Butterflies." He blurted out. He really didn't have a favourite animal, but he didn't like the thought of Hinami finding him boring, and that was the first thing he thought of.
"Aw!" She cooed. He tutted, a red hue appearing on his greyish cheeks. "Butterflies are nice. I wish I was a butterfly so I could fly wherever I wanted." She swayed her hand around in the air, pretending it was a butterfly flitting around. Shigaraki caught it and brought her knuckle to his chapped lips. She broke out in a blush and laughed.
"Shig-" He pulled her into him, catching her cheek in his free hand. "What are you doing?" He stared into her eyes for a few moments. Her face was so close to his. All he had to do was lean forward...
"I... I don't know. You've had alcohol... And so have I..." He trailed off before breaking eye contact and going to roll away from her. She stopped him, thought for a moment, then placed a gentle kiss on his cheek.
"Goodnight, Shig." She got up and walked towards the door. He placed his hand over where she kissed him. Was this because of Kyo? He had told him that he wanted Hinami to like him (for the plan, obviously!) but he had said that he wasn't sure if he could do it. 'I play with thoughts, not emotions' he had said. Shigaraki stood up, grabbed her wrist, spun her around, and quickly brushed his lips against hers. She looked shocked for a moment, before grabbing his collar and smashed herself into him.
His lips were dry and rough. Hers were soft and warm.
When they eventually parted, they were both breathing heavily. Shigaraki dragged his thumb along the bottom of Hinami's slightly swollen lips.
"Goodnight, Hinami." They shared one longing look before Hinami left for her own room. Shigaraki stood there for a few moments, wondering if that had really happened. The girl he had been longing for since he first laid eyes on her had just kissed him!
When Hinami entered her room, she leant against the door and tried to catch her breath. She couldn't believe that she had just done that. Her head was spinning but she couldn't tell whether it was from the alcohol or the adrenaline pumping through her veins. By the time she had gotten changed and slid under the duvet, something in the back of her mind started bugging her. Something just felt... off.
Her mind wandered back to the class picture in her room. To the angry mid-yelling face Aizawa had. To the way that Mina was pouting and mussing her hair. To the way that Sero was trying to hide his laugh with his pose. To the way that she and Bakugo were leaning towards each other, his hand making bunny ears behind her head, hers making peace signs to the camera. To the way they were grinning uncontrollably.
What changed?
The image faded as Hinami fell into a deep sleep, the thoughts forgotten within the hangover the next morning.
