Chapter 24
After about a week, the dorms were up and ready to move in to. My room was on the top floor, opposite Katsuki and next to Tsuyu. I had decorated my room similar to my bedroom back at home, mainly because I had spent a long time decorating it and collecting little things to put everywhere, and I was very pleased with how it had turned out. Although I was missing Ramen, a very crucial part of my room, I had been bought a fluffy pillow to match my room. That would do for now I suppose. Maybe I could sneak him in one night?
"Hey babes!" Mina called from the other side of my door. "You finished unpacking yet?" I opened the door.
"Yeah, I think so. What have you got there?" As I raised my eyebrows, she lifted the large package she had in her hands with a grin.
"You'll see. Come to the common room!" And with that, she took off down the hall. With a fond sigh, I quickly made my way after her.
After rounding up the whole class and making us sit in a big circle, Mina finally opened the box to reveal her secret item. It was a polygraph test. A lie detector.
"What's this for?" Jirou asked, prodding it.
"Mina! Where did you get this?" Yaomomo exclaimed.
"My dad is a police officer. He let me borrow it!"
"Did he actually, or did you steal it?" Sero asked amusedly.
"Hey!" She pouted in return. "Well, when you're done with your accusations, we're going to play truth or dare. And if you tell a lie, you get dunked!" She pointed to Kami, who had just entered the room holding a large bowl of ice-filled water.
Once most of us had agreed to play, Mina explained the rules. If you lie or forfeit your dare, you get dunked. You can only choose the same option twice in a row.
Mina started the game off. It was all jovial enough, with silly dares and no substantial truths.
"Bakugo! You gotta choose truth this time." Ochaco pointed at him with a sly smile. He let out a prolonged groan as he strapped himself into the machine. After waiting for a few seconds, Ochaco asked.
"Who do you have a crush on?"
"Define crush." He replied flatly.
"Romantic feelings. Don't dodge the question!"
"No one." He growled. The machine beeped, indicating he was lying.
"Hey! Your shitty machine is broken!" He yelled at Mina. She simply laughed and pointed to the bowl. Furiously, he ripped the wire off and pulled the bowl closer to him before dunking his head under the water, holding it for a few seconds, then sitting up straight with a gasp. Everyone was laughing, and even though I couldn't help but wonder who he did like, I let myself laugh too.
"Shut the fuck up. Hinami. Your turn."
"After that inspiring performance, I'll do a truth too." I strapped the wire to myself as he had just done.
"Seeings as you found that so hilarious. What about you? Do you have a crush?" After mulling over my answer for a moment, I decided that I'd rather not put my head in the water.
"Yes."
"Ah!" Mina squealed.
"Who is it?" Ochaco demanded to know.
"Sorry. That's two questions." I responded slickly, peeling the wire off and sitting back in my place. "I choose... Kiri!"
"Hit me with a dare!"
"Okay, so... When you have your quirk activated... Do you take fall damage?"
Well, long story short; Kiri jumped off of my balcony as we all cheered him on at the bottom.
The game went on for a while longer. I managed to avoid any dunkings. Eventually, it started to get late and we started to get bored. Todo chose me for the last round. I chose dare. He walked over and whispered my dare into my ear. I nodded, pulled the bowl over to me and held it up. Making a big show, I took a deep breath, closed my eyes and lowered my head towards the water. Everyone watched me with baited breath. Then, I turned and dumped the whole bowl over Katsuki's head. His whole body tensed up and his eyes widened in shock. Silence settled over the class as my peers seemingly froze in time. Just to add insult to injury, I slowly lowered the upside down bowl onto Katsuki's dripping head. He closed his eyes.
"How long do you guys think I have left to live?" I chuckled nervously.
"Ten." He replied ominously.
"Ten what?"
"Nine." Without waiting for any more information, I scrambled to my feet and sprinted out of the room, the others cackling behind me. I heard the bowl being thrown to the floor and heavy footsteps following me.
I made it to my room but, before I could close my door, Katsuki burst in and pushed me against the wall.
"You little shit!" He yelled. But he had a smile plastered on his face. I could barely catch my breath from laughing so hard. After a moment, I looked up and we locked eyes, our giggles stopping. We were simply staring into each other, panting heavily. I could feel my face heating up and my stomach twisting in an almost pleasant way. Katsuki's body was pressed against mine, warm despite the icy water dripping off of him.
He had one hand on the wall beside my head, one on my waist, and mine had made my way to his shoulders. Both of us leant forward slightly. My eyes fluttered shut.
Then, his warmth disappeared. I barely caught sight of him leaving the room.
"I'm going to take a shower."
And he was gone. The only evidence of our moment was the damp imprint left on the front of my top.
After a few moments, I made my way back to the common room, slightly dazed. Most people had dispersed.
"You're still alive?" Tokoyami asked amusedly.
"Barely."
"Your top's all damp." Mineta drooled. "It's a shame that it isn't white-" Tsu slapped him around the back of his head as she walked past.
"Well, if pretty much everyone else has bailed-"
"Hinami!" Mina called from the sofa, waving me over. With a sigh, I walked over. Her, Kami, Sero and Kiri were all piled up together, legs all tangled. On the other sofa, Mido, Todo, and Tenya sat normally while Ochaco had her legs resting on their laps.
"Sit down!"
"Where?"
"You can sit here! I can sit on your lap." Ochaco stood up and patted where she was sitting. Despite knowing that this was mainly an excuse to trap me and ask questions, I sat anyway. Once we were all settled, Kami started off.
"So. Hinami... This crush of yours..."
"What about it?" I replied in a monotone voice, a bit too similar to Father.
"Are you going to tell us about him? Or her?" Mido pressed.
"No. I'm not... actively pushing our current relationship."
"Why not? I'm sure that many people want to date you. There's a chance that your crush is in that." Said Todo.
"There's too much going on in my life. It could be-" I stopped.
I was going to say that it would be dangerous to date. But wouldn't it be dangerous for them to just be friends with me? What if I was putting all the people I care about in danger by simply being friends with them?
"Hinami!" I suddenly came to and realised that everyone was staring and Ochaco was now crouched by my side. Tenya clicked in front of my face.
"Yes?"
"You're hyperventilating." He pointed out. I put my hand on my chest. I was. My head was spinning and light. My ears felt like they had cotton wool or something in them. It wasn't until I suddenly became aware of my speedy pulse that I realised that I was having an anxiety attack. Did I deal with this as I usually do? Do I call Dad? What should I do? My thoughts were happening in slow motion. A cold hand enveloped mine.
"Are you alright?" I pulled Todoroki in close, closed my eyes, and pressed my ear against his chest, letting his heartbeat calm me down. His hands rested awkwardly on my back. After a few moments I sat up straight.
"Sorry."
"Are you okay, babes? You gave us a scare there."
"Just an anxiety attack."
"Why? Is it something we said?" Kami asked.
"Kind of. But don't worry about it." I smiled. "I'm sorry for scaring you. And sorry for grabbing you like that, Todo." He shrugged his shoulders and gave me a small smile in return.
"Don't apologise." Tenya said softly, patting my shoulder. "You can't help it. Why don't we discuss something else now?"
"I'd rather just go and get a good night's sleep, thanks. School tomorrow and whatnot..." They all gave me an understanding nod and bid me goodnight. Before entering my room, I thought about talking to Katsuki. I stood outside his door, debating whether to knock or not, listening to the music that was playing softly in the background. Some old-school rock, I think. After a few moments, I sighed and went into my own room.
That night, I had a lot of trouble sleeping. I couldn't stop thinking about the possibility that Zap was right. What if I was a danger to my friends? Even so, I doubted that I could ever convince them to stop being friends with me.
And Katsuki... Was he going to kiss me? Why did he change his mind?
I thought back to the woodland training. He told me that he was embarrassed after we hugged - the first real affection we had shown each other. Maybe he was embarrassed again. But why?
I brought my knees to my chest, as if trying to squeeze myself back together. I also thought about calling Father. It was his night to stay - he insisted on being here the first night.
No. I was the one who convinced him and Dad that I would be okay and that I could look after myself.
So I simply sat there, trying not to get too wrapped up in my own mind, waiting for morning.
