Prologue

10-year old K.K, or Katherine Kay as she was called when she was in trouble, looked out through the bars of her dog-crate cage to try and get a headcount of her family. Jack, check. Lacey, check. Yin, check. Pop, check. Mimi, check. She mentally checked off all of her "siblings" and sighed with relief when she saw that everyone of them were there. None of the whitecoats have come to take them.

For her whole life, K.K had lived in her dog-crate cage and rarely saw the outside world. When she did, she was usually forced to do a grueling task like fly while being held down by weights. That's right, fly. K.K and her family aren't all human. They are mostly human, 98%, to be precise, but the other 2%, was avian DNA, or bird DNA for those of you who don't know. This meant they had wings on their backs, different blood, were somewhat skinny, and had air sacs. Other than that they were normal kids...besides living in a cage and being tested on like lab rats.

As K.K was contemplating her life, the door opened, letting in light from the hallway. A woman walked into the room with a white lab coat on and a pair of keys jingling from her hip. She was a familiar woman to K.K; her name was Lisa. She was the closest thing that K.K had ever had to being a Mother. She was always nice to K.K and the other experiments, taking care of them and always giving hugs and kisses when they needed extra comforting. Even though she would get yelled at for it, Lisa wanted the children to have somewhat of a normal experience in life. To her, they were more than numbers, they were children.

Anyway, she walked over to K.K's cage as if she were in a bit of a rush. K.K could tell because of how quickly her heals clicked against the floor. Click, Clack, Click Clack. She bent down to look in K.K's cage to see her inside. K.K stared at Lisa with her big brown eyes and Lisa stared back with her green ones. The woman then smiled at K.K and unlatched her cage. "There isn't much time Katherine," she said in a serious voice, using her first name instead of her nickname. "We need to go."

"Go?" K.K asked as she crawled out of her cage. "Go where?"

Lisa looked at K.K and then placed a hand on her shoulder. "We're leaving this place."

Hearing Lisa sat that was a dream come true for K.K. She wanted to scream and shout with glee but knew that in doing so she let the other whitecoats know what was happening. She and Lisa went to five more cages, getting out five other kids K.K's are or younger; Jack, Lacey, Yin, Pop, and baby Mimi.

Lisa gathered the children into a small group and then opened the door to the room. There was a long hall that stood between them and freedom. "Everyone follow me in a line," Lisa instructed the five, since she was carrying baby Mimi. "If anyone asks, let me explain I'm taking you in for a test. Understood?"

The five children nodded and followed Lisa out of the room. K.K was right behind Lisa, followed by Lacey, Yin, Pop, and then Jack bringing up the rear. Each child was in a white hospital robe and looked somewhat malnourished. They also looked like they hadn't see sunlight in months, which was very true.

As they walked down the hall, another door opened and out of it came another female scientist writing on a clipboard. She walked past the group, not really paying attention, but then stopped and looked at them. "Ms. Winters?" she spoke, causing Lisa to stop and look back at her. "Where are you taking those recombinant lifeforms?"

"The director has ordered more testing to be done," Lisa said in an official-like tone. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have work to do."

Just as Lisa reached for the doorknob that led outside, the other scientist yet again spoke-up; "But ma'am, there's just testing with the Erasers today."

A huge lump developed in the children's throats and Lisa remained silent. Then she shouted, "Run!" The group of kids ran out the door and followed Lisa through a courtyard to a helicopter. The courtyard, though, had Erasers on each side behind bars, growling and trying to reach for the children. They continued forward anyway, despite being frightened, and made their way to the helicopter. They climbed into the back and Lisa got into the front to steer the vehicle. She gave baby Mimi to K.K. for her to hold and then got the helicopter airborn just as the Erasers were being released to try and capture the group but to no avail.

As the helicopter got higher and higher, Jack glanced over his shoulder to see another helicopter getting into the air. "Lisa, I think that we've got trouble," the normally silent boy said.

The young woman looked over her shoulder and tensed up a bit. However, when she saw who was flying it, she sighed with relief. "It's okay guys," Lisa assured the children. "We're safe."

The other helicopter went towards the East while the one carrying Lisa and the kids went North. As the helicopter parted separate ways, K.K. glanced at the copter to see it she could get a look at who was inside. She saw that there were six children in there as well but one caught her attention; a blonde haired girl with brown eyes that were similar to K.K.'s eyes. They looked at each other with shock and just stared at each other until they could no longer see each other, even with their raptor vision.

In the state of Washington, on the border of Washington and Canada, there was a secluded house in the woods. Inside, Lisa was showing the kids around the house. They were all running around and jumping, glad to have room to be kids. Lisa chuckled as she looked at the children play. She was glad to see them happy. Then the phone rang.

"I'll be right back," Lisa told the children. She walked into her private office and answered the phone. "Hello Jeb."

"Lisa," Jeb said on the other end of the line. "I see you for there safely."

"Yes," Lisa replied. "Listen Jeb, I don't want to put them through this."

"This is out of our hands Lisa. We have to let the children do this. They will understand one day."

Lisa wasn't too thrilled about what the children were going to have to go through. She knew it was going to be tough but she couldn't stop any of this, no matter how much she wanted to.
