CHAPTER TWENTY ━ WHATEVER HAPPENS

(𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚙𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚝𝚠𝚎𝚗𝚝𝚢.) 𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍𝐒
❝ WHATEVER HAPPENS... I LOVE YOU. ❞

"Hey."

Poet stopped walking when she felt someone grip her wrist. She smiled and her eyebrows furrowed in question as to why Diego stopped her from walking any further.

"Yes?" She questioned. He sniffed and placed a hand on the back of her neck, thumb rubbing itself on her skin. "You okay?"

"Yeah, yeah, of course," Diego nodded. "I just... I just wanted to tell you that whatever happens... I love you."

Poet smiled and hugged him, arms wrapping themselves around his neck. "I love you, too."

"I'm just annoyed that I won't get to meet that teacher who harassed you," he mumbled in her ear. The two separated and walked in front of the others, Diego glancing at the girl with a smirk as he heard her chuckle. "I'm being serious, sweets. I would've sliced his throat."

"I know you would've."

As they made it to the barn, Diego immediately placed a hand on his girlfriend's arm when she clutched her head in pain and fell to his side. Not far from them and the others, stood Five and Lila, not noticing their presence.

"She never cared about your parents," they heard Five say to Lila. "She was looking for you."

"Why?" Lila whispered.

Poet shook her head and breathed in and out quietly, calming down her excessive breathing and to get rid of the pain in her head. With the help of Diego, she stood up straight.

"'Cause you're one of us," Diego responded, now catching the attention of the two. Lila turned around and she noticed the way Poet's eyes glowed a little.

"The Handler stole you, Lila," Poet continued.

"Just like our asshole father took all of us."

"No," Lila declined. "It's not the same thing."

Diego stepped up to talk but Poet reached out a hand, having seen everything inside the head of Lila and the Handler. Paris stood not far next to her, feeling the pain and confusing Lila was feeling.

"You're right," Poet softly spoke. "Because their dad didn't have their parents murdered. Listen to me, Lila. You were born October 1st, 1989, the same day as all of us."

"Stay back!" Lila shouted, causing the others to wince. Poet stayed put.

"Lila, listen," the girl continued. "Listen, please."

"I trusted you," Lila now averted her attention to Diego. "I got you a job, I even introduced you to my mother, and then you took off on me."

"I never asked for any of those," Diego said. "I didn't. I-I have someone, Lila. She's standing in front of you. I needed to save the world with her!"

"Your mother's using you, Lila," Poet spoke up. "The Handler."

"You're wrong," Lila said. "You know nothing about me. She raised me. She loves me."

"Yeah, you know what?" Luther piped in. Everyone turned to look at him. "Love shouldn't have to hurt this much." He let out a sympathetic smile and instead of the reaction he hoped for, Lila gagged. "Alright, I tried."

"He's right," Five said. "We have to kill her."

"Five," Paris spoke up. Five looked at him. "Stop. We got it."

Five listened and Poet spoke again. "Hey, Lila. The truth... the truth is she's dangerous. And you're scared of what she'll do with all that new power, I hear you. That's why you dragged Diego with you to the Commission."

"Because I know what it's like to love dangerous people," Diego commented, his eyes set on his girlfriend before they traveled around to his family. "Difference is... they love me back."

"Shut up."

"The only thing she loves is power," Poet went on. "The minute she can't use you, she will turn on you, and I know you know that."

"You don't know me, Poet," Lila said, stepping forward to press the knife on Poet's chest. Diego stepped closer but Paris held a hand in front of him, stopping him.

Poet stuck out her hand and a red orb showed, flashes of her as a child appearing. "Don't I?" She mumbled. "I know that they can be your family... we can be your family... if you just let us."

Lila looked around at everyone and she turned to look back at Poet, sniffling. Diego was surprised since just moments ago she was threatening to punch Lila, her words replaying in his head like a song; "Will someone do me a fucking favor and hit that bitch for me? Or I will kill her and I'm not kidding." He had to calm her down.

But before Paris could speed and stop the bullets from hitting them, everyone was shot. All of them, except Lila, who now watched Poet drop next to Diego.

Poet, still alive, coughed a bit and looked at her nephew reaching out for her. She placed her hand out for him and shielded his and everybody's body with the usual scarlet color. Knowing she wouldn't die just yet since she was shot in the shoulder and in the leg, she closed her eyes and pretended to be dead, trying her hardest not to cry since Diego and everybody else was now dead. Paris wasn't dead, yet, she knew, since she kept talking to him in her head.

Close your eyes, Paris, she thought. Dad is by you.

And it was true. Julian was standing beside Paris who was trying his hardest not to heal himself. There was blood surrounding his body just as the others were, too.

"No..." She could hear Lila's trembling voice as she reached out to  the couple. But, her hands wouldn't touch their body's since the red shields didn't disappear. The Handler stood by her, staring at the two.

"Aww," she said. "Romeo and Juliet... what a tragedy." She looked at Paris. "Oh and Five's boyfriend."

"It's true, what Five said, isn't it?"

"Darling," the Handler started, "I need to know that we can get past this, be a happy family again. Hmm?"

Lila stood up and looked at everyone. "They're my real family." She stood in front of the woman. "Do you even love me?" Receiving no answer, Lila went to strike the Handler, but, the woman reacted almost immediately and shot her.

But when she noticed Five still alive, the Handler hovered above his body with a gun out. Poet opened her eyes when she heard silence, but winced when she heard another pair of gunshots. She later heard the Handler gasp harshly before more gunshots were heard and a thud, clearly from the body of the Handler hitting the floor.

"Shit..."

"I know that they can be your family... we can be your family... if you just let us."

Diego immediately stood by his girlfriend's side when they heard someone gasp and a couple of wrestling movements. They then turned to see that Five was fighting the Handler for the gun she was about to use on them all.

Successfully taking ahold of the gun, Five pointed it at the Handler and the woman raised her hands up while Lila spoke. "It's true, isn't it? What Five said." When she didn't receive an answer, she spoke louder. "Answer me! Is it true?"

"Well—"

Poet immediately guarded everyone's body when the Swedish man appeared and shot the Handler from behind. Everyone gasped at coming to see the woman's body fall on the ground, but nobody could process Lila rushing to the case the Handler had.

"The case!" Luther yelled, getting out of the shield Poet surrounded him in and going after her. But the brunette immediately stopped him, engulfing his body again with a scarlet hue.

Lila disappeared and now everyone watched Five point the gun at the Swedish man. Five dropped his gun and it landed softly on the floor. "Enough."

The Swedish man looked at everyone and then did he drop his gun and repeated after Five in Swedish.

"Vänta..." Poet called out, causing everyone to look at her, including the Swedish man who was starting to leave. "I know your brothers have passed away..." Everyone was surprised at the fact that her voice changed to an accent that they have never heard her speak in. "I have suffered through that pain, too. I know you're in pain, but we can help you with that."

Paris sped to him and placed a hand on his arm. He took away the pain he felt and noticed a more of a serene look in his face. Poet then raised a hand and flew an orb in his head where he could relive the years with his brothers. The Swedish man smiled a bit.

"Tack."

The man now left and the others were consumed by silence. Luther spoke first. "I almost had her. Why the hell did you stop me?"

"Because..." Poet sighed. "She wanted to find herself."

"Who the hell was that guy?" Klaus asked, gesturing told the man that just left.

"Vanya! Help!"

"Oh, shit!" Poet let out. "I forgot about that situation."

Klaus hummed in agreement and they followed after Vanya who was already running towards the shout.

Going down the stairs, Vanya called out. "Sissy?" They watched as Vanya easily made herself go through the shield Harlan put himself into. "Whatever it is I gave you, I can take it back, okay? We just, we need to stop this."

Watching Vanya place her hands on Harlan's propped up knees, they watched her hands glow before the light disappeared and everything was back to normal.

"Good job, Vanya."
