CHAPTER TWENTY-EIGHT ━ TELL HIM TO HEAL ME

(chapter twenty-eight.) tell him to heal me
❝ YOU JUST WARMED UP TO ME, PEACHES. ❞

POET AND DIEGO WERE FOLLOWING AFTER THE MAN NAMED HAZEL, both of them the only ones awake as Klaus and Paris were out. Poet puffed out her cheeks, looking around and Diego looked at her through the rear view mirror.

"So..." Diego started, clearing his throat, "are you feeling okay? I can drop you off at the house so you can rest. Because I can do that if you want, I can take you—"

"I'm fine, Diego," Poet chuckled, placing a strand of hair behind her ear. "Really. Let's just follow the man and I'll go with you to defeat them or some shit."

"Nope," Diego shook his head, looking out the window and swerving. "No, mmm-mmm. You're not going with me, you're staying in the car. I don't want anything to happen to you."

"Diego," Poet groaned, her head falling back. "I'm fine. Like the I'm-ready-to-beat-someone's-ass type of fine. But fine, if it makes you feel better then I'll stay in the car. I'm just going to step in when they're shooting at you."

"Fine," Diego said, parking not so far from the people. "But if you get shot, I'm gonna tell Paris not to heal you."

"Sure you would," the girl scoffed, looking out the window as she felt Paris' head land on her shoulder. "You couldn't even try, Diego. You'll instantly tell him to heal me, and Paris loves me too much. But, you will instantly tell him to heal me."

"You just warmed up to me, peaches," Diego smirked at her and Poet rolled her eyes playfully at the new nickname the man had given her now. He then sing-song the nickname. "Peaches."

"How many more nicknames are you gonna give me?" Poet questioned, raising an eyebrow. A smile was on Diego's lips as she looked at him and he glanced at her before looking at the two people heading towards their motel room.

"I have multiple, babe," he chuckled before turning off the car and getting out. He leaned down so he could look at her, pointing a finger at her. "Don't come out, alright?"

"I know, Diego."

With a last warning look, Diego walked away, heading straight to the peoples' car. Poet furrowed her eyebrows when she saw him disappear in a matter of seconds but immediately panicked when she came to find the man, Hazel, staring right at Diego. Poet sighed, already knowing that this was gonna go to shit.

Diego came in the car, sitting down as he looked over at the only awake brunette. They both stared at each other before they both looked away, looking up at the window where the two people that they were looking for had been staring at them, too.

"Bingo."

"I don't think this is a good idea," Poet wanted to say but she knew that Diego would wave away her concerned thoughts and still do what he was about to do. But instead the words, "Killing isn't gonna make it better, Diego. After all, I'm fine. I'm alive. I'm breathing" came out of her mouth.

"Yeah, but when it's done," Diego looked back at her again in the rearview mirror, "I'm gonna sleep like a baby."

"Mhmm."

A few minutes passed and all Poet could do was eat a pack of sour patch kid that she found in Paris' backpack. She almost dropped them, though, when Diego spoke up and scared her.

"Stay in the car."

"Why?"

Diego and Poet looked towards the passenger's seat where Klaus was just waking up, Poet's powers trailing away.

"Just stay in the car."

"What are you talkin' about?" Klaus asked, immediately sitting up in the seat and looking in between his brother and his friend. "This guy tortured Poet."

"I have a plan."

Diego got out of the car, leaving Poet and Klaus to look at each other with a look before they looked away.  Klaus looked outside the window before he turned to look at Poet again, who was following Diego with her eyes to make sure he wouldn't get killed. She turned to face Klaus when she noticed him staring and raised an eyebrow.

"Yes?" She questioned. Klaus shrugged, turning around to stare at his brother, a hint of a smirk on his lips while he crossed his arms. "Klaus, I can read your mind and, to answer your question, Diego and I didn't do anything. We just talked."

"With what?" Klaus asked. "Lips or words?"

"Uh, words?" Poet furrowed her eyebrows. Klaus squinted his eyes. "And no, you're not going outside. Diego said not to. If you do, I'll stop you. You're not getting yourself in trouble or, worst of all, killed."

"Fine," Klaus whined. "But can you please just go and check on him? He's gonna get himself killed and I don't want to see anybody die today. I've already had a lot on my plate."

"Okay," Poet sighed, opening her car door. She stuck out her hand, a scarlet color surrounding it. She placed her hand over Paris, a scarlet shield surrounding his whole body. Klaus watched with awe. She then turned to look at him, watching as another scarlet shield surrounded his body as it did to Paris'. She backed away, closing the door. "Be right back."

Klaus watched the girl go, staring at the shield. He poked it, only gasping a little when he saw that his finger went through it.

Poet walked up to the stairs and stood behind Diego. He sighed when he felt a presence, throwing a knife to the side. Poet raised her hand immediately when the knife headed towards her, grabbing it tightly.

"I told you to stay in the car," Diego said, turning around to glare at the girl. Poet raised her hands up. "You're gonna get hurt, sweets."

"Look," Poet said, staring at him as they were close, chest to chest, "they already know you're here. What happens if this is a trap? I came here because I know how these two are with traps. If it wasn't for me, Patch would've been dead and I couldn't deal with the guilt. Please, just... Be careful."

"Anything for you, sweets," Diego said with a small smirk on his face. She smiled at him gratefully and looked away over her shoulder to check up on Klaus and Paris. Diego just kept his gaze on her, running his eyes through her face. Her eyes. Her nose. Her eyebrows. Her cheekbones. Her lips... But he snapped out of it, clearing his throat softly. "But for once, please, I need you to listen to me, okay? If I don't come out in two minutes, that means I'm probably dead." He placed her hands on her arms, looking at her straight in the eye.

"I—"

"If that happens, go get help," Diego said, still looking at her with an intense look. The girl glanced over her shoulder to look at Klaus and Paris, the boy still asleep while Klaus stared at them with a smirk, giving her a thumbs up when he saw that she was looking at him. "Okay?"

"I don't know if you forgot," she started, "but Paris, you remember him? He's starting to warm up to you and I'm pretty sure he's become overprotective of you, so, he won't want anything to happen to you. Paris is like... Hmmm... Your guardian angel, basically. But with an attitude."

"Poet," she crossed her arms, staring at him with a raised eyebrow and squinted her eyes at him. Diego sighed. "Fine. Fine. Fine. But be careful. Please. That's the least you can do."

"You be careful, too."

They went up to the stairs together, their hands occasionally bumping against each other. When they reached the motel door, Diego looked down at Poet who looked back at him and nodded back and kicked down the door.

They came to find the room empty and both in synch, turned to look at the right, hoping to come upon the people that they could finally do something to. And they did... When they turned around and saw the car containing the two assassins.

Shots were fired and Poet immediately stuck her hand out, protecting the two from getting shot. But it was too late as Diego got shot in the arm. She grabbed his other arm, pushing him behind the wall and looking towards where Klaus and Paris were at the moment.

"Are you okay?" Diego asked, groaning a bit as he held his arm, looking at the girl who was already checking on his arm. "Damn it, sweets, I'm asking you if you're okay?"

"I'm fine."

"Come on."

They ran downstairs immediately, stopping in their tracks when they realized that the two people were escaping yet again.

"Get in the car," Diego said, watching as the girl immediately headed towards Paris who was holding his chest and breathing heavily.

"Jesus," Paris breathed out before chuckling. "That scared the crap out of me but, it was fun. It was fun. Yeah... Gave me a heart attack but damn was that a wake-up call."

Poet turned to face the two brothers as Klaus kicked the car. She sighed, knowing that a small argument was about to start. She turned to look back at Paris, who was shaking his head at the two.

"Was this all part of your master plan?" Klaus questioned.

"Shut up."

"Hm?"

"I can-" Paris was cut off by Diego, the man immediately pointing at the ice cream truck in front of them.

"The ice cream truck!" Klaus yelled, immediately heading towards it. Diego followed after his brother and the Capulets looked at each other.

"They do know that I could've sped to get new tires, right?" Paris asked, he and Poet heading towards the back of the truck. Poet sighed.

"Just... let them."
