CHAPTER FOURTEEN ━ A PROMISED DATE

(𝚌𝚑𝚊𝚙𝚝𝚎𝚛 𝚏𝚘𝚞𝚛𝚝𝚎𝚎𝚗.) 𝐀 𝐏𝐑𝐎𝐌𝐈𝐒𝐄𝐃 𝐃𝐀𝐓𝐄
❝ YOU CAN FINALLY TAKE POET ON A DATE. ❞

"So I found a way home."

Poet, perched on Diego's back, held on tightly as Diego stopped in his tracks at listening to his brother's words.

"What? How?" Luther questioned, fixing his pants.

"All the details are irrelevant, but..." Five answered, staring at himself in the mirror to fix his tie. "I made a deal to get back to our timeline."

"What about doomsday?" Diego questioned, squatting a bit so Poet could land on the floor with her feet. She did so and Paris passed her the rings she had taken off, grabbing his backpack on the side in the meantime.

"Won't happen."

"And the 2019 apocalypse?" Diego asked again.

"Everything will be back to normal," Five replied. "Alright? Now, no more questions. We gotta go." He sighed. "We have to find the others, right?"

"Yeah."

"Luther, Poet, you two get Allison—"

"Um, I want to do something first..." Poet smiled innocently. Everyone turned to look at her and she chewed on her bottom lip as she clasped her hands behind her back. "Can I do that?"

"Is it gonna take long?" Five asked.

"Nope," she said. "10 minutes tops."

"Then, yeah, but we have a short amount of time," Five nodded. Poet nodded and she looked at Paris who grabbed a couple of snacks and ate them, shivering as his body shook a little too quickly with energy. "Diego, Klaus," Five pointed at Diego. "I'll get Vanya. Now, we meet back in the arrival alley in 77 minutes." He walked towards a couple of watched while fixing his blazer. "Here. I've synchronized these watches."

"Okay, let's do this."

"Woah, woah, woah, hold on," Diego let out, stopping Five from walking away any further. "You show up drenched in blood and expect us to believe everything's gonna go back to normal if we go home now?"

"Elliott just got killed because of us," Five argued, pointing towards the covered dead body."

"What about Dad?" Diego questioned and Poet furrowed her eyebrows at him. "What about JFK?"

"Diego, we have a chance to go home and make things right," Five stepped closer. "We are taking it. You can finally take Poet out on a date, think about that."

Diego stayed quiet for a sec before he nodded. "I have to say goodbye to Lila."

"What?" Poet questioned. Five glared at him even harder at hearing her voice.

"Lila doesn't give a shit about you, Diego!" He exclaimed. "She never did. She's one of them. She's a member of the Commission."

"No way," Diego denied. "Not possible."

Poet read his mind and sighed sadly at hearing his thoughts. She was worried for a second, assuming that Diego might've liked another girl. But he was worried since this Lila had told him about what she suffered through as a child and he had viewed her as a friend and had become protective as a brother.

"She was just using you to get to me," Five continued. "You're the Oswald of this story, my friend. The goddamn patsy."

"Five," Poet whispered, shaking her head gently when he looked at her. She mouthed next, "Calm down."

He mouthed back a "fine" while walking away, ignoring Diego's words, "You don't know what you're talk—"

But Poet sighed and rubbed her forehead when Five teleported in front of his brother, pointing at him. "If you don't do this, I'll kill you myself. Got it?" He glanced at Poet and Paris, and the girl read his mind when she heard his words "I won't do that" loud and clear. He was gone in a matter of seconds and Poet stepped closer to her boyfriend.

"Hey," she mumbled. He looked at her and wrapped his arms around her shoulders, sighing as he kissed her head. She wrapped her arms around his torso. "You okay?"

"It's just crazy," Diego mumbled. "I saw her as a friend and I trusted her. You know how hard it is for me to trust someone."

"I know, babes," she nodded. "Maybe we'll look for her if you want and you can say goodbye, yeah?"

"No, no, no," the man shook his head. "It's fine, sweets. Go do whatever you're going to do."

"No, you need me right now," Poet looked at him. "I'll go with you to get Klaus."

"What are you even going to do?"

"You know that asshole that kept harassing me?" She asked. "The one Klaus told you about?" Diego nodded and his face hardened. "Well, I'm going to make it seem as though he's being haunted. I know where he lives since he... told me for some reason."

"I wish I could go," Diego mumbled.

"I wish you could, too," Poet smiled. "But you need to get Klaus. I'll see you, okay?"

"I love you."

"Love you, too."

"Be careful, please. Maybe when we go back, you can finally take me on a date."

"I will. I promise."

Poet and Paris stepped away and the boy immediately sped them towards Matthew's house. Poet smiled deviously and Paris chuckled, speeding away to look around the house and stopping in his tracks to give her a thumbs up.

"He's in there!"

"Good," Poet sighed with a smile plastered on her lips. She walked towards Paris, who was standing by a window, and looked inside the house where she could see Matthew in his living room, polishing his shoes. "Watch this."

She moved her fingers around and she saw the dining table move a bit. She then allowed her fingers to glow, creating a scarlet hue to swim around them, and watched with satisfaction as Matthew jumped at hearing the table scraping against the floor.

"Wait, let me go inside his house."

"No, Paris—"

Paris had sped away before his aunt could finish and before she knew it, the boy was already standing behind the man, waving at his aunt from the window who was mouthing at him to leave. Matthew was checking the table and trying to look for the source, but he turned around when he felt someone staring at him.

Paris appeared in front of the window and caused Poet to roll her eyes, yelling at him in her mind. She later heard Matthew yell out a "hello?" while glancing around his house, hoping that he it was all in his head. But despite how fast he was, Paris didn't see the fact that the teacher saw him.

"Paris?" He called out.

Paris froze in his steps and Poet did, too. She immediately opened the window with her mind and created a small orb. She made it fly towards Matthew's temple and in a snap, his eyes were glowing and he was looking off into the distance. Poet closed the window and looked at her nephew who sped away. He smiled sheepishly at his aunt and scratched the back of his neck.

"Sorry."

"Oh, good. It's you and your stupid face."

"Weird time to garden," Lila commented as she watched Diego sighing a hole. "Can we talk? The truth this time."

"Oh, I know the truth," Diego said. "You used me, Lila. You're a liar."

"Oh, come on. What did I really lie about?"

"Who you are," Diego answered, "who you work for, why you're here, what you want from us. That's all."

"Yeah, but the rest was true," Lila defended. Diego continued to ignore her. "Everyone lies, Diego, and... and I was only lying to protect you." Diego stopped digging and stared at the girl, who stopped in her tracks. "Mostly."

Diego held the shovel in his hand. "Do you know how hard it is to trust people when your whole childhood was bullshit manipulation?" Lila nodded. "Then why would you do that to me?" She didn't respond and he dropped his gaze, disappointed.

"Tell you what, I'm gonna finish this whole..." he grunted, "...save the world... take my girlfriend out on a date, and forget we ever met."

Lila questioned the "girlfriend" part, but shook it off, walking away. She noticed a body laying by and stopped. "Wait, is that... is that dentist-chair guy?"

"Elliott. Your Swedish buddies got him."

Lila raised the cover that was covering him and immediately dropped it. "Oh, shit. I liked that shit-muppet." She grabbed a flask from her back and opened it. "Well, here's to Elliott, I guess. Um... I'll miss his crazy theories..." She turned to look at Diego who continued digging, "and I'll miss sharing his bed with you."

Diego looked up at her at hearing her words and he sighed. "Look, Lila... I-I only view you as a friend. Nothing more. I have a girlfriend, who I love, and-and you can't say stuff like that."

"Alright, alright," Lila sighed. "We're still drinking for Elliott."

She took a sip and passed it to Diego who took it and drank the remaining liquid. When he finished, he threw the flask to the side and ignore the sound that it let out.

"We done now?" He went back to digging, but he stopped when he felt himself drift out. He panicked when he finally realized what was happening. "Oh... balls."

He fell on the ground and Lila stared. "Yup."

She walked towards his body and grabbed the shovel, throwing it to the side, too. She grabbed his legs and dragged him away.

"Let's see if your girlfriend tries looking for you."
