Afterlife (Haylijah)
"It's very peaceful, isn't it?" Elijah asked. "Have you seen Niklaus?"
Hayley shrugged. "Probably causing misery for all the other souls around here."
Elijah and Hayley were sitting together in a clearing in the woods. Ever since Elijah and Klaus had moved on to the afterlife, Hayley had been there with them. She seemed happy just to see them both, as they were to see her.
There were things Elijah had been avoiding saying, and now that they were alone, it seemed like it might be a good time to bring up what was on her mind.
"Hayley, I'm sorry," he began. "I should have saved you that day, from Greta. I should have done something more than help the other side. I should have known the impact it would have."
"But you didn't. You didn't have your memories."
"Yes, but I still should have chosen my family, my real family. I didn't realize what I had done until I got my memories back, and by then it was far too late. If I had something," he looked around them, "Maybe we wouldn't be here. The point is that I could have much better, and I didn't. I failed you that day, Hayley, and everyone else."
Hayley nodded. "Okay. I see what you mean, and I accept your apology. Knowing you, I'm guessing you've been beating yourself up over this since you got your memories back. And I guess maybe you kind of were to blame, but it's hard to blame the guy who had magical amnesia and didn't really know what he was doing."
"But I knew who you all were. When you came to Manosque, and we spent that day together, I knew exactly who you were. I just didn't want to go back to that life, the one I had with my family."
"Well, I doubt the Mikaelson reputation looks good on paper," Hayley said. "But you know what? This is the afterlife, Elijah. You'll be able to apologize to me as much as you want until you think you've done enough apologizing, which will probably be never."
"Are you forgiving me?" Elijah asked.
Hayley shrugged. "Maybe. I mean, we have all eternity to figure it out, so I don't think we have much to worry about now. Except maybe Klaus. Is there any way you could have not brought him with you? Not that it isn't nice to see him, but still."
Elijah smiled. "No. It seems like we're a package deal."
Hayley sighed. "Well, I guess tolerating Klaus can't be that hard if you've done it all your life. But anyway, stop beating yourself up, okay? It doesn't really matter anymore, since we're all dead. And like I said, we have forever to work out our problems, so let's hope everything will be all right in the eventual end."
