A New Step (Handon)
Spring came and went, summer arrived, and then that was it. The current year at the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted was over. For some students, it was their final year at the school. Two of those students were Hope Mikaelson and Landon Kirby.
Hope and Landon were completely and absolutely in love with each other. They shared a bond that was very difficult to break, and that was if it even could be broken. Whatever one decided to do in life, the other would always be somewhere close by. But the thing was, they had rarely talked about their future. They had always been so busy protecting the school from some threat or just living in the moment. They never took the time to seriously consider what their life together might look like once their school years were over.
Hope was understandably sad on her graduation day. This school had become a home to her, a real home. And she was leaving it, and she had no idea what to do next.
Late in the day, she went to sit alone on the little dock by the water. It was a beautiful afternoon, and there was still another hour or two before the sun went down. She sat quietly, staring out at the lake and wondering where she would go next. She would have to go to New Orleans first, to spend time with Aunt Freya and her family. But where would her life take her after that?
"Hey, you."
She turned her head to see Landon walking her way.
"You getting tired of the party, too?" she asked him.
"Well, it probably would be more fun if you were here." He sat down next to her. "So, what are we doing?"
She shrugged. "Just thinking. You know, I never really thought about our futures. Like, what happens now that we've graduated."
He sighed. "Yeah, I don't really know, either. I want you to be there, obviously. I haven't, like, picked a career choice or anything. Well, what do you want to do?"
"First I'd like to go back to New Orleans and spend some time with my family. And then...I'm not sure."
"Well, you know what I think? We could come back here," Landon suggested. "I can see you being a teacher or some kind of mentor right here at the Salvatore School."
Hope raised her eyebrows. "You seriously think so?"
"Yeah, I do. I can picture you teaching and guiding other young supernatural beings."
"Okay. What would you do?"
He shrugged. "I don't know. Dr. Saltzman might be able to find me a job around the school. Or I could get a job in Mystic Falls. I could find something I like doing."
She smiled. "Doesn't matter as long as it's you and me."
"Exactly." He wrapped his arm around her. "It's you and me as long as you want it to be."
"Forever," she whispered as she squeezed his hand.
