A New One?

In the begging, there was only one.

One lonely soul in a mind full of nothing.

This was its first time powering a human, and it was not happy.

At least other species' were interesting. Their minds were full of colors, aromas, music. Even from birth, they were able to process things, and all of that happened inside the depths of their consciousnesses. Where the soul was.

It was entertaining and always somewhat different and interesting.

But humans?

They were just annoying.

The soul had been forced to sit and listen to the child whine and spit for days. To watch on that tiny screen as ugly beings with weird protrusions covered in bland, disgusting, leather ran around.

The world was so monochromatic from human view too. Most other species could see hundreds of completely diverse colors.

Humans could see three.

It was no wonder that had such bad mental health, at least from what the soul had heard.

But there was nothing it could do now. Souls had no influence over their host's lives. They were just there to observe, to watch and make sure their hosts weren't forgotten.

It was a noble calling, but when it resulted in being assigned to watch disgusting creatures like humans, it just seemed more like more random bullshit that the universe decided to throw at its children.

This was going to be a long lifetime.

***************

At first, Soul wasn't completely sure they had really heard it. A little giggle in a world of silence.

Its host was sleeping now, which made things about as quiet and boring as they could get. It was better than the constant crying though.

All this being said, when the noise made itself apparent, Soul shook it off as something the child's brain had come up with. Maybe part of one of those 'dreams' her parents had spoken too much about.

But when it came again, louder and more distinct, and another time after that, Soul grew more interested.

It cast its consciousness out over the small, yet infinitely large, area it had been living in for the past three years.

Nothing, nothing, no-

Wait.

A small amount of colored light glowed close to where the screen normally was.

Soul focused on the light and became fascinated with the tiny yellow being that stood in it. It looked almost exactly like the characters in one of the picture books its host's parents read her and her sibling before her sleep cycle began.

Bright yellow fur covered its entire body, which was made up of a large stomach, skinny arms and fingers, toeless feet, and a long striped neck. Five long black hairs protruded from its head and a white circle of fur almost like a scarf sat at the base of its neck.

The only difference between it and the ones from the book was that instead of having either a star or nothing at all marking its belly, there was a small dragon.

The dragon grew and grew until it had enveloped the entirety of the last being, which Soul believed was called a Sneetch, and was as large as the screen itself.

It had dull purple scales and when it opened its mouth it revealed large, glistening white fangs.

That strange giggle came again, from right beside the dragon.

Soul was sure it had heard the voice before, but couldn't place when or from who. It couldn't even place its tone or pitch.

The voice was gone too quickly to really process it, though it was enough for Soul to recognize that it was completely different from the last time Soul had heard it.

But there couldn't have been two beings there... right?

The dragon bent down, bringing its nose behind its self and just out of Soul's sights. It had to be to the source of the voice. Or... sources?

Soul refocused its observation in front of the dragon.

Just in front of the face that had reached for the voice, there sat... Nothing. It seemed to be nuzzling something, but there was nothing there.

The strange, distant yet incredibly close, voice cackled.

Suddenly, the dragon was hundreds of tiny dragons stacked on top of each other, which all collapsed with a puff of smoke into a... flower. It crumbled and disappeared just as quickly.

Now, something that is important to note. Soul did not have a body.

Soul was more a semi-concentrated awareness that contained enough power to support life and spiritual awareness, depending on how old or powerful they were.

So it didn't need a body.

But when the voice's breathing began to become apparent, Soul could swear it was right by its ear.

Chuckle.
