Chapter Five: Papyrus and Bedtime

(By the way, I'm changing the way it's written so that it does not make my head spin out of confusion when I write. Please understand. See ya Lunarlings!)

Y/N's POV
Wh-what?

'Monsters down here will flat-out kill me?!' I signed to Frisk.

They nodded. 'Except for these two Skelebros,' they signed.

"Comforting," I muttered under my breath.

Sans' POV
As I was trying to distract my bro from Y/N, I noticed Frisk look at the lamp, shocked, then confused. Then they started using sign language. I had never been that good at reading it, so I couldn't interpret what they were saying.

What I was fairly certain of, however, was that they were talking to Y/N.

I let no realization cloud my face as I continued to talk to my bro. Then I made the rather large mistake of making a pun while Y/N was in the vicinity.

"So, uh, bro? I've been wondering, what's a funny in the newspaper called, again? I've been searching for the word, but I just can't find it." I turned my head barely, winking at Y/N, who had a confused look on her face.

Papyrus thought, then said loudly: "OH, I REMEMBER! IT'S CALLED A COMIC, SA—"

His eyes widened in realization, then narrowed them, glaring at me. I hardly suppressed a laugh, and when I looked over, I saw that Y/N was the same way.

"Go on," I said with a wide grin. "Say it!"

He sighed, then yelled unhappily, "IT'S CALLED A COMIC, SANS."

I burst into laughter. Unfortunately, so did Y/N. Pappy quickly noticed a double set of giggles and questioned it.

"WAIT. I HEAR TWO LAUGHING. I'M NOT LAUGHING, AND NEITHER IS FRISK. THEN...WHO ELSE IS?"

Y/N and I stopped laughing at the same time. She sent me a worried glance. Oh no...Paps was gonna find her out!

The first thing Papyrus did was look behind the lamp. He found her and dragged her in front of me.

"AHA! I HAVE FOUND A HUMAN! THIS IS THE SECOND TIME IN A ROW FOR ME! THIS TIME, I WILL TELL UNDYNE FOR CERTAIN AND THE BARRIER WILL BE BROKEN FOR GOOD! NYEH-HEH-HEH!"

I was panicking like I'd never panicked before. I was worried about Y/N. Frisk was a different story. They easily managed to win over Papyrus's heart. I didn't know about Y/N, though.

"Barrier? What barrier? Are you guys... trapped here?" she asked, a look of...wait. Was that...worry on her face? Yeah, it was. But...why? Why would she be so worried about monsters?

Y/N's POV
"Barrier? What barrier? Are you guys... trapped here?" I asked. I didn't know if my face revealed it or not, but I was really sorry and worried for them. No one deserves to be trapped under a mountain for what appeared to be a long time.

My mother had told me about the war between monsters and humans that happened a long time ago. Humans had killed the Monster King's son, and the king was so mad about that that he declared war. More ash had spilled than blood, and humans reigned victorious. I didn't know what happened to the monsters. My mother never seemed...eager to talk about it. The thing I remembered the most about the storytelling of the war was my mother's utter disgust when talking about the humans. She thought they were stupid for killing the king's son and didn't deserve to win the war. She talked as if she wasn't one herself.

I came back to reality to see a sad look on Sans's face, as I was facing him (ba dum ching). "Yeah," he answered, trying his best to keep a smile on but failing miserably. "The barrier was enacted more than a century ago to keep us down here in our Underground prison. We need seven human souls to break the barrier, and we'll be free."

"Oh" was all I said in return. I felt full of KINDNESS, JUSTICE, and DETERMINATION. I couldn't leave these guys here to metaphorically rot! I promised myself that, ASAP, I would volunteer my soul so that all of monsterkind would be free. Just like I was never wrong, I would never sway from what I knew was the right thing.

"Anyway," Sans said, likely in an attempt to have a topic change, "we should probably get going back to our sentry stations in case we spot another human, right, Paps?"

"BUT, BROTHER, WE ALREADY HAVE A HUMAN! THEY'RE RIGHT HERE, SEE?" Papyrus protested, showing me once again to Sans. I give him a questioning look, but he's staring icily at his brother in a way that didn't exactly give me butterflies in my stomach.

"This human shouldn't have her soul taken away. Y/N is a kindhearted human who would never hurt another, even a monster. Please, Paps. Please? I wouldn't want anyone to have a bad time..."

Was he threatening his own brother? Over...me? A human he just met? What was going through his mind then?

Papyrus's face changed to what was either fear or uncertainty. "OKAY, SANS. I TRUST YOU."

Sans immediately switched at the speed of light. He grinned lazily in his seemingly standard manner. "Great. By the way, I'm heading to Grillby's. Call me if something comes up. Bye, Paps."

With that, he walked away, leaving me, Papyrus, and Frisk confounded as to why his mood was prone to quick changing.

"WELL, THAT WAS STRANGE. ANYWAY, HUMAN, SINCE YOU WILL BE STAYING IN SNOWDIN, I SUGGEST YOU LIVE WITH ME, SANS AND FRISK! THAT WAY, THEY CAN HAVE ANOTHER HUMAN TO HANG OUT WITH! I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WILL ALSO TEACH YOU HOW TO MAKE MY FABULOUS SPAGHETTI! NYEH-HEH-HEH! WE WILL BE SECOND-BEST FRIENDS, BECAUSE FRISK IS MY BEST FRIEND. COME ON, HUMAN! NO TIME TO WASTE!"

He turned on his heel and marched in the direction his brother went. I assumed that there was a town that way, probably named Snowdin by the tall skeleton's statement.

We walked past a library, a bar with a glowing neon sign that read Grillby's (where Sans said he went, I noted), and many other places before stopping in front of a two-story house painted a dark blue hue. Frisk slid off of Pap's shoulders and stood beside him.

"WE'RE HERE, Y/N! THIS IS WHERE WE LIVE! COME INSIDE!" Papyrus ushered me inside. Frisk trailed behind him.

The living room was a decent size, with a green couch facing a TV. Nearby was a rather small kitchen and a door to a room I didn't know. Up the stairs, there was an open door to what looked like a bathroom.

"WELCOME! DO YOU LIKE IT?" Pap asked. I smiled warmly at him. "Of course I like it! It's really nice. I'm glad that I have somewhere to stay in the Underground." I reached out and gave him a hug. "Thank you so much, Papyrus. I owe you guys a lot."

~Time Skip: A Few Hours Later~

Sans' POV
I was walking home from Grillby's after spending a few hours there thinking. I usually spent more time there thinking than eating or drinking ketchup, anyway.

I got home and saw Y/N in the living room, wide awake and staring at something she was holding in her hand. When she noticed me standing in the door, she quickly stood. "Oh. Hi, Sans. I was waiting for you to come home. You were out late. What were you doing?"

I knew that the truth would sound suspicious, but I said it anyway. "I was thinking. It's my thinking spot. No one bothers me there, and Grillby lets me stay late."

To my surprise, Y/N just nodded. "All right. I was just wondering. Are you out late all the time?"

"Some nights. Paps stays up until I read him his bedtime story. Did he ask you to read it to him?"

"Mr. Hugs Says Night-Night? Yeah. He fell asleep as soon as it was over. I've been told I have a great storytelling voice."

"You have a great voice in general," I mumbled without thinking.

She leaned forward. "What was that?"

"Nothing!" I said quickly, blushing a light blue. I was very glad that the room was dim and she couldn't see it.

"So...night, Sans," Y/N said, yawning widely. "Wait, where are you sleeping?" I asked. "I was gonna crash on the couch. Why'd you ask?" she replied. "You can take my room. I'll sleep on the couch."

"What?" Y/N furrowed her brows and bit her lip. "But...but it's your room. I wouldn't want to take that away from you." She flopped onto the couch and crossed her arms. "I'm staying."

I sighed in mock frustration. "Fine. I'll have to do this the hard way." My left eye glowed blue, and Y/N lifted into the air, surrounded by a hazy blue aura. She squealed as I did so, whisper-shouting, "Sans! Put me down, put me down!" I laughed as silently as I could, watching Y/N struggle. I hovered her up the stairs behind me, into my room, and dropped her onto my bed. "No!" she whined, crossing her arms again. "Yes," I answered, smiling widely.

Y/N let out a loud sigh, and said, "Fine. Hmph." She laid down and pulled the covers around her. "But don't think I don't owe you. Twice," she muttered. "Fine by me," I said.

I stood there awkwardly for a minute, then told her, "G'night."

"Night, Sans. See you in the morning." She turned over in her covers.

"See you in the morning," I responded. I treaded silently across my floorboards into the hallway and shut the door. Stepping down the steps and avoiding all the creaky ones, I jumped onto the couch. It only took a minute for me to fall asleep.
