"What? That's impossible." Sans said, disbelief clouding his face. I sighed, and Checked my soul. I brought it forward. His sockets widened. "I...I've never seen anything like that. But what does your soul have to do with your mother being a monster?"
I exhaled in exasperation. "Yeah, I've been getting that a lot lately. And my mother being a monster is the only explanation. I'll show you proof."
I brought out the box from my backpack, which I had teleported to the Underground using my magic pen. I opened the box, pulled out the pen, and wrote on a sheet of paper, thinking of how Sans is my best friend. I smiled, and the ink glowed. The dust in the box started rising into the air. It hovered as Sans stared at it, then dropped back into where it belonged.
I showed him the paper. On it was a beautiful calligraphic sentence—Evelyn L/N's dust rose a few inches in the air, hovered for thirty seconds, then fell back into the box.
Sans' POV
"How is this possible?" I muttered, staring intensely at both the writing and the box. I could ask Ink about the pen, but I suspected someone used similar magic to his paintbrush to create the pen, so that wasn't my number one priority. The question that took that spot was: how in the world was Y/N a hybrid?! Humans and monsters never got along, so how did she end up as a combo? But she had just proved to me that that pile of dust was the remains of her mother.
Then I remembered—our...date. At Waterfall. Which I was hopelessly unprepared for. I didn't want to leave Y/N now, but to get what I wanted done, I would have to.
I sighed, and told her, "I'm sorry that I have to go. I'll be back soon, okay? I won't tell anyone if you don't want me to."
She smiled vaguely, and said, "First of all, okay; secondly, I know you will; and last, I would prefer it if you didn't. I don't want anyone freaking out, like Alphys...or the king...and basically everyone else. This is just between us. Please, promise me, Sans."
I hated promises, especially ones that are impossible for me to keep. But, for Y/N...I'd keep a promise forever.
"Of course, Y/N. For you."
She nodded, and sat down on the couch. "I'll be waiting. Be back soon."
I hummed a response, then teleported over to Waterfall. I rubbed my boney palms together.
"Time to get started."
Y/N's POV
I laid back on the cushions, staring at the white ceiling. Still looking up, I took my locket from my pocket and lifted it into my line of vision. The silver glinted in the light, just like it always did.
I pried open the miniature clasp with my fingernail, and read the engraved inscription for the millionth time in my life. My soul would never stop being moved by those simple, life-changing words.
My gaze slipped over to the memory gem, shaped like an echo flower. I gently traced the edge with my finger. So much happiness here...but as the days go by...I've started believing in it less and less. I sighed in...what? What was I feeling? It wasn't positive, yet it wasn't negative. It was...in the middle of my soul.
A presence sunk into the couch beside me. By its quietness, I could assume who it was.
"Hi Frisk," I murmured, pushing myself up into a sitting position. They nodded at me, and signed, 'Hi Y/N. How are you?' I studied the carpet, before saying, "Honestly? Emotionally drained."
I looked back up to see a surprise on Frisk's face, most likely expecting an explanation. I bit my lip, peering down at my clasped hands, and said, "After twelve years, I finally realized that my mother is dead."
Their face changed instantaneously to sympathy. 'How did you find out?'
"Sans mentioned that monsters become dust when they die, and that triggered a memory," I answered. "When I was seven years old, my mom and I had to hide from a severe attack from anti-monster supporters. At that time, she was the vice-president of the largest and most powerful monster-supporting group in the world. She went out to check if it was safe. But she never came back. I waited hours, before venturing out. I found this pen, and using it I discovered, without realizing, my mother's dust. I took it for 'good luck,' apparently. But now, I know the truth. And the truth hurts. It always hurts. That's why I feel so drained. I don't want to feel this, but life goes on, I suppose. There's nothing I can do to stop it."
Frisk moved to place a soft hand on my arm. Their chocolate eyes told me everything they couldn't. That, though they hadn't ever felt what I did, they still felt my pain with me. They still supported me through everything I was going through. They still loved me like I was their sister. And that, I decided suddenly, was what I wanted most.
Tears threatened to spill from my eyes. No one had ever cared for me like this before, except my mother. I tightly wrapped my arms around them in a hug, which they returned.
"Thank you," I whispered, and Frisk nodded. Right now, I realized that I felt genuine happiness. I was smiling to myself over their shoulder. This time, however, I desperately wanted to keep this memory. I couldn't make myself let it go.
A faint blue light entered the room. I let go of the hug, wiping impressions of tears from my eyes as I faced Sans. Tibia honest, he looked exhausted. But there was still a smile on his face.
He held his hand out to me. "Y/N. I have to show you something. Come with me."
I stared at his hand a moment, before slowly reaching out and grasping it with my own. A blue aura surrounded us, and we disappeared.
Slightly nauseous and dizzy, I opened my eyes to darkness. There was faint light coming from somewhere, but at the moment, I couldn't tell where.
I finally studied my surroundings, and was in awe. It was a beautiful path of echo flowers. Their gentle blue glow enticed me forward, making me follow their winding road. Their soft whispers were just out of detail, but the voices themselves were calming.
I heard running water splashing to my left. Turning my head, I saw a waterfall crashing into a river, bubbling on its way to wherever it went. I smiled to myself.
Looking forward again, I saw Sans chilling on the riverbank, staring into the water. He gave no indication that he knew I was there.
I slowly approached him from behind and crouched. 3, 2, 1...
"BOO!" Sans yelled, and I leapt in surprise, screaming. Then I calmed down, and glared at him. He was trying to suppress laughter, but it wasn't working very well.
"Sorry," he managed to say. I replied, "Don't say things you don't mean," and sat down beside him, gazing at the water.
We were both quiet for a while. I enjoyed the peaceful near-silence that no one and nothing invaded. I sighed in contentment, and said finally, "Ya know, this place is gorgeous. I never thought I'd see anything this beautiful in my entire life." I turned my head towards Sans, but he was already looking at me. "I already have," he murmured softly.
I blinked a moment, surprised, before my cheeks automatically dusted a light pink. I looked away, but I couldn't stop a grin from making its way onto my face.
I felt fingers intertwine with mine. I looked at my hand, and saw a skeletal one next to it. I also noticed that, while Sans was watching the river, his cheekbones were a light blue, getting darker every few seconds. I giggled to myself.
After a few minutes happily sitting like that, Sans stood up, pulling me with him. "There's something else I need to show you," he said. He started dragging me further into the cave, to which I started laughing.
We entered a smaller room. Sans plopped down in the center of it, laid down, and stared at the ceiling. A bit confused, I followed suit, and saw what he wanted me to see.
Little glowing lights on the top of the room mimicked stars on the surface. They may have been prettier than real ones. I gave a gasp, and whispered, "Whoa..."
"I knew you'd like it," he said beside me.
"Scratch what I said earlier," I muttered. "I never thought I'd see anything this beautiful in my entire life."
"And my statement still stands," Sans finished.
I looked over at him. He was already looking at me with a blush only getting bluer. I smiled at him, blushing myself. I reached out and gave him a one-sided hug. "Thanks for this. For everything."
I was about to stand up when Sans said, "There's something I want to tell you. Well, actually, ask/tell you."
I raised an eyebrow. "Go on."
He took a deep breath, and turned back toward the stars. "There used to be a time when I felt no one really got me, ya know? Even the kid felt like I was some sort of mystery; I do have to give them credit, though, for trying to befriend me. Years went by, and I was just on my own. Years and years of the same old thing. The kid tried to change it up some days, but eventually even that became predictable. I still felt alone."
"Then you came along. From the first minute you understood me like no one has before. Not even my own brother gets me like you do. Now, I can talk to someone I can trust. I can trade puns. I can even sit in comfortable silence, just enjoying the fact that you'd sit there next to me. For the first time in forever, I've felt happy. I've felt hope. And for that, I have to thank you. However, there's more."
"For a long time, you've been a friend, a sister...but recently, I've been realizing that you are more than that. You are more than what I could ever wish for."
The smile I had on my face slowly faded. Wh-what? Is he...doing what I think he's doing?
"I don't know how you feel towards me, but I know how I feel towards you. So, Ms. Y/N...would you do me the favor of becoming my girlfriend?"
Girlfriend? My smile was gone now. I...I wanted this. I wanted it so much. I think...that I...liked—no, loved Sans. But I couldn't let myself love him. I couldn't accept his love. I needed to make him happy without making me happy. Crazy as it sounds, it's what I was born for—spreading happiness and hope. Not keeping them for myself.
I stood up abruptly, and started running away. I had no direction, no destination. I just had to get away.
Sans' POV
I finally confessed to Y/N! It felt good to get it off my chest; I'm surprised that I didn't sigh in relief. I looked over at her to see her reaction, but it wasn't like anything I expected. She was pale, like she was panicking. Then she stood, and ran out the room.
"Wait!" I yelled, getting up myself and chasing after her. However, I had never been the fittest of skeletons. Soon Y/N was nothing more than a dot.
Dejected, I plopped down on the ground. I felt exhausted, confused and partially heartbroken. Was that her way of rejecting me?
"HEY SANS!"
The muscular blue fish that nearly killed Y/N ran up to me, shiftily looking around as if searching for any other presences nearby. The nerve of some monsters!
"What do you want?" I spat at her. I was befuddled why, in the weeks after what happened, Y/N befriended her. I knew it was very possible—a love of anime got Undyne to be friends with Frisk—but the why always confused me.
"We need to talk," Undyne told me in a quiet voice. I raised a nonexistent eyebrow. She was as loud as Papyrus most of the time, and only hushed up when it was serious.
"I don't think so," I answered in an icy tone, and turned my back on her, walking away. It was a moment before Undyne muttered something that made my freeze and my blood go cold.
"She's not who you think she is."
That alone made me turn. "What's that supposed to mean?" I asked in the same voice I had already used, but a twinge of fear had rooted itself in it and wasn't letting go anytime soon.
"I mean," Undyne said irritably, "that Y/N is hiding something from you. And I've seen it with my own two yellow eyes."
I knew that Undyne was not a liar. She had never been a liar. It wasn't in her nature to lie about things. So I decided, rather reluctantly, to listen.
~Time Skip: After Explanation~
My eye sockets were huge. Y/N was like that? I...I never knew...she hid it so well! I would have never guessed that underneath her happy mask she was... in Undyne's words, 'dark.'
I have to help her. I have to make her see that she's why I'm happy. I ran off, looking for Y/N.
Undyne's POV
After I told Sans the truth about Y/N, his eyes got really big, and a minute went by before he zoomed away. I shrugged to myself.
"Skeletons," I muttered aloud. "Always weird."
(Yay! New part! Sorry for delays. Love you all.)
