Chapter Eight

Edited

~Kaylee

Mustering up all my strength, I pushed Christian away and immediately ran up the stairs to my room, so many questions swarming through my head.

What was I doing? What was he doing? What were we about to do!?

OK maybe you’re overreacting Kaylee. Let’s just try and calm down.

Before I even had a chance, the door swung open and Christian walked in.

“You can’t keep barging into my room like that!” I glared at him.

“I knocked but you weren’t responding.” He said. “I just wanted to make sure you were ok.”

“Why wouldn’t I be?” I said sitting on my bed. “Just go.”

My face was flushed and I was too embarrassed to look at him.

“So I’ll take that as a yes I will be your partner “I turned to look at him.

“I said no” I replied.

“Why won’t you be?” He asked sighing.

“There’s nothing you can learn from my life, what’s the point?” I looked away again.

What could you possibly gain from the life of a broken girl with cancer?

“I’m sure that’s not true”

“And you don’t know shit about me so leave me alone”

“Exactly, I don’t know anything about you so let me know”

I hesitated for a second before turning to look at him.

“You really aren’t going to give up?” I asked.

“I believe you owe me a favour. I’m asking for a favour now, to be my partner. “

Groaning dramatically, I fell on my bed.

“Fine, don’t expect to get an A with me” I gave in.

“I was thinking about A plus” He winked at me and I rolled my eyes. “About what happened downstairs though…”

“Nothing happened!” I exclaimed quickly covering my face with my pillow.

“I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable.” He removed the pillow from my face. “I just w-“

“It’s fine.” I cut him off shut not wanting to hear the rest of it. “The door’s that way, you can leave now.”

“We have a project to work on” He stated settling on my bed and I felt the urge to push him off.

I actually attempted to, stretching my leg, I tried to reach him but he was too far or maybe my legs were just short.

Either ways, I gave up trying and decided to let him stay. Partly because I knew he wouldn’t leave anyway if I tried to kick him out.

“You do all the work, I’ll be asleep if you need me” I took the pillow again and covered my face with it.

I was just getting comfy when my pillow was cruelly snatched from me, again!

“You really don’t need me for this project” I grumbled reaching out for another pillow but once again, it was snatched from me.

“Yes I do, if we’re writing an essay about life then I need to get to know about you more”

I sat up so I was facing him directly.

“Are you using this project as an excuse so I’ll talk about myself?"

“What do you think?” He grinned. “How about we play a little game to make it fun?”

“What game?”

“20 questions”

I cocked my head. “20 questions?”

“Yeah. I ask you a question then you ask me. And we just keep going on”

“It sounds dumb, like a children’s game.”

“I’ll start. What’s your favourite colour?”

“Cockroach brown” I answered without a thought and he gave me a look. “Fine black, it matches my heart.”

I was lying but he didn’t need to know that.

“I’m going to assume purple since that’s the theme of your room, right?” He replied and I narrowed my eyes but nodded.

I had to admit he was smart. Really smart.

“Your turn” He said.

“Why’s the sky blue?” I asked bored.

“Really?” He raised his eyebrows and I sighed.

If I cooperated, the faster we can end this so I did.

I learnt a lot about him though, so did he about me. I didn’t think I would actually find myself enjoying a dumb game like this.

His full name is Christian Louis Anderson, he got his middle name from his late father that passed on almost a year ago. He turned 18 a few weeks ago before he moved here from New York City, he had always loved basketball since he was a kid.

His favourite colour is blue because he loved the ocean and he hates green because he once had a pet turtle that bit him. He randomly blew on tik tok after he posted a dance video when he was 15 and he’s been at it ever since. He left his old school because of some scandal that happened but he was happy to because he wanted to start afresh.

Ding!

His phone lit up as a text message appeared on the screen.

Behind the text though, was a picture of him and a little girl.

She looked fairly 7 or 8 but she was very pretty. You could tell they were siblings from how much they looked alike. Christian held her in his arms as they stood near a Christmas tree beaming at the camera with the same amazing smile they all seemed to share in their family.

“You have a sister? She’s so adorable” I couldn’t help smiling at the picture.

He looked down at his phone and then smiled too, but it was different. Different that it was a sad smile as he looked up at me, I could tell because I’ve seen it a lot.

“Yeah, she really was the cutest” He said softly.

“Was?” I frowned.

“She...she died” the smile vanished from his face.

He just kept staring at the picture without saying anything. He must have really loved his sister with the way he stared at her.

My hand reached out to touch his breaking him from his trance.

Saying you’re sorry wouldn’t change anything, she was gone. I would know from experience. Instead I gave him a small smile, probably one of the most genuine I had ever given him, which he returned back.

“Umm...Favourite food? “ I asked changing the topic as I withdrew my hand after a few seconds.

“Definitely pizza” He said appreciating the sudden change of topic. “Yours?”

“Anything that has chocolate in it and chocolate itself of course.”

“What’s your dream?”

“Dream? “

“I’d love to be a professional basketball player one day” a small smile playing on his lips. “You?”

I didn’t answer immediately, I was taken aback.

Dream...

What did I want to do? I hadn’t thought much of it before, I knew I didn’t have a future so why bother?

But if I did, what would I want to be?

“Probably a writer” I found myself saying.

I loved reading books and in my spare times when I was a child, I remembered writing lots of novels. I was pretty good in English class, actually the top student when it came to writing.

Plus, I really did enjoy it so why not?

“It’s unique, I like it“

I like it too but too bad it’s only a fantasy.

“OK, last one and definitely not the least” Christian said. “What are you grateful for in your life?”

Once again, I had to pause and think.

What was I grateful for?

A family?

Dead.

Friends?

Backstabbers.

Life?

Piece of crap.

I had nothing to be grateful for as depressing as that sounded.

“Nothing” I looked away. “Nothing at all.”

Cupping my face with his hand, he gently turned my face till I was facing him. His eyes were soft as he gazed into mine.

“Well, that’s got to change right?”

.

Now you know a little more about them I guess
