The Only Girl in the Band...[Part 7]
Ian glared at me and then walked past me to Caleb's desk. On it, sat a Mac.
"Hah. Sucker. Left his laptop in here," Ian said, more to himself than to me.
"We're supposed to be talking things out..." I mumbled, sitting on Caleb's bed and rolling up the sleeves to Caleb's too-big hoodie.
"Like I'm going to talk to you. Be quiet. We'll just fake it when he lets us out in an hour," he said. Just then, the door opened. Caleb walked in, went to his desk, grabbed his laptop off his desk, and snatched Ian phone from his hands. He held his hand out to me and I looked up at him. He raised an eyebrow and I pulled my phone out, too, and handed it to him. Without saying a word, he left the room and locked the door behind him.
"Well, there goes your plan," I said. Ian groaned and closed his eyes. Then he looked at me.
"What the hell are we supposed to talk about?" he asked.
"Well, you can start by apologizing to me," I suggested.
"Hell no. I don't do apologies. Goes against the image," he said, putting his hands behind his head and his feet on Caleb's desk.
"What image? Control-freak, douche-bag, jerk?" I asked.
"Why are you so annoying?" he asked back, glaring at me.
"Why are you such a jerk to me?" I asked him. He still sat, his eyes narrowed. He seemed to be thinking about something. I saw the processes of thoughts flit over his face. Then, finally, he sighed and stood up, and then laid down on the bed.
"I don't know," he admitted. I turned and leaned against the headboard.
"Ian, I want the same thing you do: to be a successful artist. And it's not going to happen if we keep arguing over stupid things," I told him.
"You're right," he said. I furrowed my brows. Why was he agreeing all of a sudden?
"What do you mean I'm right?" I asked.
"What else does being right mean, Vanessa?" he asked, looking up at me.
"Every other time I've said that, you always bring up an argument-" I began saying.
"And maybe I'm tired of fighting with you and listening to Caleb give me the same lecture every time you get upset," he interrupted. "I'm still not happy with you being in the band. But from now on, I'll keep it to myself," he said.
"Well I'm not happy with that. I want you to accept me into the band," I said.
"That's going to take time," he told me in a somber voice.
"So what are you suggesting?" I asked him.
"That you give me my space and I'll try to get over the fact that you're in this to stay," he replied. I sighed. I guess that was better than us biting each other's heads off every time we saw each other.
"Starting now?" I asked. He shook his head.
"Starting from when he lets us out of here. We've still got another 30 minutes," he said.
"Right," I said. There was a moment of silence. "So...should we talk or..." I muttered awkwardly.
"Can I just say that you look ridiculous in those clothes," he said, turning his head and touching the loose-fitting hoodie.
"I wouldn't be wearing them if someone hadn't been a complete jerk and let me walk home in the rain," I said. He raised his eyebrows slightly and then faced the ceiling again.
"You're the one that gets angry too fast," he pointed out. I rolled my eyes.
"You know you started it and now you're not admitting it," I said.
"I didn't start anything. I was just stating my point of view," he argued.
"Yeah, but you knew that whatever you thought would make me upset," I retorted. He looked at me with his intense brown eyes.
"We're arguing again," he stated. I looked down at him and sighed, pulling up the hood to Caleb's hoodie.
"Let's change the subject," I said.
"Good idea," he agreed. We sat in silence for a few moments.
"So..." I said.
"So..." he repeated.
"Do you have any brothers or sisters?" I asked, picking a random topic out of the air.
"Yeah. I have an older brother. He's in his last year of medical school," he told me.
"Oh, that's cool," I said.
"At Harvard," he added. I let out a low whistle.
"Smart ass?" I asked.
"The biggest," he replied. "Do you have any siblings?" he asked me. I shook my head.
"Nope; only child. Parents are both lawyers. Both of them graduated from Yale. They were disappointed when I told them I didn't want to do law. I'm only doing accounting just to do it; my real interest is music," I told him.
"Which is why you're doing this?" he asked. I nodded.
"Hmm..." was all he said. "What would your parents say if they found out that you joined a band?" he asked.
"Probably disown me. That's why I'm kind of glad that you guys have plans to get famous. That would shut them up a bit," I answered.
"Isn't it a little too late for your rebellious years?" he asked.
"Nah; I figure, it's my life. I'm going to live it the way I want. My parents aren't always going to be around. If I do something to make them happy for a couple years and then they pass away, I'm going to be left doing something I hate for the rest of my life. And that's not what I want to happen," I said. He sat up and faced me. "What?" I asked when he didn't say anything.
"I didn't give you enough credit. I guess the back-story does help," he said. "So your friend...is she single?" he asked, to change the subject again. I threw a pillow at him.
"Seriously? She's not interested," I said.
"How do you know?" he asked.
"Because she's my best friend," I said. "And at the moment, she has a boyfriend, sort of," I continued. "Oh, and you're totally not her type," I added. He rolled his eyes at me.
"Whatever, you just want me for yourself," he said. This made me laugh.
"Me? Want you? HELL no; you're the cockiest son of a bitch I've ever met. I go for the decent guys," I said.
"Like Caleb?" he asked, a smile on his lips. I felt my ears go red and was glad that the hood was covering them.
"No; Caleb has a girlfriend," I said.
"Yeah, but the way I see it, they're going to Splitsville pretty soon. And then he'll be single and you can be his rebound," he told me, leaning against the sideboard next to me.
"I'm not going to be anyone's rebound," I said. He shrugged.
"Then how about Camron? He's a nice guy. Why not go for him?" he asked.
"Why do I have to date any of you in the first place? I'm happy single," I replied. Now he laughed.
"Biggest lie ever. No one is ever happy single," he said.
"Why not? A lot of people are. Being with someone makes more drama. Just look at Caleb and Emma. All of that drama? It's because they're together. If they weren't, both of them would be a lot happier, I guarantee it," I said.
"So you do want them to break up?" he asked.
"No! I-that's not what I meant!" I exclaimed. He raised his eyebrows. "Stop twisting my words!" I said, hitting his arm.
"All right! All right!" he said, putting his hands up. Once we calmed down, we sat in silence again. "But seriously. You have to have a thing for one of us," he said. "We're a good looking group of guys. How can you resist?" he asked. I rolled my eyes at him.
"I don't have a thing for any of you," I said, turning my head to look at him. He turned his head, too. Our faces were inches away from each other. His brown eyes sparkled with mischief and malice. I felt my heart beat a little faster as he began to lean in a little. He was really close now. I found myself leaning in, too and then he closed the gap and our lips connected.
It was like an electrical wire on the fritz. It was like a thousand fireworks going off at once. It was like a million butterflies burst to life in my stomach. His lips were soft against mine and they moved in sync with mine. We both turned our bodies so that they were facing each other and he brought his hands to my face. I put my arms around his neck, closing the gap between our bodies.
Then we heard a click at the door and scrambled away from each other. We were both breathing hard and looking at each other with confused looks.
"So much for not having a thing for anyone," Ian breathed.
Caleb opened the door and looked at us on opposite sides of the bed.
"What's going on?" he asked.
"Nothing! I have to go!" I squeaked, jumping off the bed and running outside. I grabbed the bag with my wet clothes in it and my purse and shot up the stairs, Camron and Liam yelling after me. I jumped into my car and without another glance, drove home.
What the HELL just happened?
