Chapter 5

I changed my mind about how I would tell the story. Instead of doing an omniscient point of vue, it would be from only Valeria's point of vue.

Though, now that Val has grown, she can sense the dragon's emotion through the mind-links, so we will know what they are feeling too.

*******************************

Valeria's P.O.V.

*8 years later*

I loved living with the dragons. Larius and Cygun were like my parents while Yvy was like my sister.

I was now 18 years old, but I still got in trouble every other day.

Take right now for example, I was about to jump off the cliff and try to get Yvy to catch me. All the dragons always helped me out trying to figure out new acrobatics that we can do.

I mean over the years, I am used to riding the dragon with no saddle. Larius gave me one, but it is very light and is only used in case of long trips where I am liable to fall asleep and fall off.

I happened once, but Cygun caught me in time. I got a firm scolding afterwards for putting myself in danger.

Being surrounded by dragons for the majority of my life has slightly changed me. My psychic energy grew much stronger than ever before, I could speak with anyone I want at any distance and hear their answer.

I also had the small power to manipulate fire. It didn't work so well half the time. If it was a life-or-death situation though it came alive. I mean that's how I found out I had it.

*Flashback*

"C'mon Yvy. Just a little fire won't hurt anyone," I begged. Yvy and I had gone up high in the mountains and I was freezing

Larius had warned me against doing this of course, but at 15 years old, I didn't listen.

I wanted Yvy to light us a fire. She was hesitant because her control of her fire breathing abilities was okay at best and awful at worst.

Yvy gave in, "Fine, just a small one though and don't tell dad."

She took a deep breath and exhaled fire. She did the little fire just fine, but then didn't stop. We were in a cave and the fire blocked our only exit. Yvy would be fine, being a dragon, but I wouldn't.

I was freaking out and the fire got too close to me.

Suddenly, the fire stopped moving towards me and away. My palms seem to be pushing it away.

I looked at Yvy who was staring at me in amazement, "How can you do that, Val?"

"I have no idea what I am doing," I told her.

I walked forward and the fire moved back.  We continued like that until we got out of the cave. Yvy was amazed and brought us immediately to Larius and Cygun.

They too were impressed, but also mad we disobeyed them.

*Flashback over*

I tried a couple times after that. It can work most of the time now, but it took a lot of practice and still takes a lot concentration.

I asked Yvy, "Are you ready?"

"Yup," she replied.

I started to run and jumped off the cliff. Every dragon was holding their breath. This is the first time Yvy and I did this together. I've done it with Sonya who once she got over her infatuation with the Royal brother was nice.

I also held my breath until I landed on Yvy's back. Immediately, I balanced myself.

Sonya who was watching commented, "Well done, Val."

Then, there was a roar, "VAL! YVY!" It was Larius and he probably just discovered what we just did.

We both cringe and the dragons around us look at us sympathetically. No one wanted to be at the receiving end of Larius' anger.

Yvy and I were about to submit ourselves to Larius and whatever punishment he conjured up when I saw a dragon in the distance.

I pointed it out to Yvy, "Look at that dragon. She is really struggling and appear injured."

Without hesitation, we both flew towards her.

I told Larius, "Give us a second, we are going to aid an injured dragon. We might need your help."

"I'm coming," replied Larius. He might be mad, but the health of his dragons come before everything.

When Yvy and I approached, it became obvious that she was bleeding heavily and was on the point on collapsing. It was Kysy, a stormy grey dragon I could recognize anywhere.

The moment she saw us she went faster. Yvy was quite big and Kysy was on the small side. Yvy could catch Kysy if she fell if I wasn't there.

I could see Larius catching up to us, but he would not be able to catch Kysy in time. A fall at this height would be fatal to her.

As soon as I saw Kysy starting to fall, I made my decision.

I told Yvy, "Whatever I do, just catch Kysy."

She nodded her agreement and I took a breath. There was a high chance that this could kill me.

Kysy was falling in the earnest and I jumped off Yvy. True to her word, Yvy shot forward and caught Kysy.

I closed my eyes as I went falling. There were only two ways for this to go either I was caught by Larius or I died. Either way, Kysy was saved.

Then something strange happened. Time seemed to slow.

I knew that Larius was too far to catch me, but then he was beneath me. I had started to fall slowly through the sky like in slow motion though everyone was moving at their regular pace.

All I knew was that now I am resting on Larius' back. No one spoke, just flew back quickly to the castle.

All the dragons around us had seen what I did and in all honesty, to save a dragon, I would do it again.

When we landed, the dragon medic was there to tend to Kysy's injuries. I approached her and she grabbed unto my arm, refusing to let go.

She said,

"Into the woods and pass the glade

Into human lands,

Resides an enemy so strong that we alone cannot defeat

Join together two kingdoms once split

For alone we are lost

But we cannot wait for the others to die

For then it will be too late."

With those fateful words, Kysy's eyes rolled into the back of her head and she passed out. I was confused as hell and so was everyone else. But we had to wait until she woke up to get some answers.

Now, I had to talk with Larius and Cygun about what happened earlier and what we had done.

Larius told me mournfully, "You could have died."

Defending my actions, I retort, "Kysy could have too."

No, I mean you would have died. I don't know how I caught you. I was too far to catch you, but then you started to fall slower and I made it. It's impossible," he muttered.

It was at that moment when Kysy decided to come back to the land of the living, saving me from answering.

She commented smiling, "Oh my, if only I knew that my near death would get the great Dragon King at my feet, I would done it sooner."

Kysy would be okay. If she could antagonize Larius, then she will definitely survive this.

Larius said, "This is not the time for insults, Kysy. You are the Oracle Dragon. So why on earth were you half-dead in the air?"

Her smile disappeared as she answered, "I had a vision. Our next visit would be in a couple days, so I thought you know I could go check it out. In the vision, there were these awful deformed wolves attacking the humans. I thought it might be a metaphor for something."

She took a sip of water, "It wasn't. Before I knew that of course, I went to our farthest border near the human's border. And what do you know? There were thousands of these creatures. They spotted me and attacked as I was on the barbarian territory. I was able to get behind dragon borders where apparently they couldn't follow."

I asked, "What does this have to do with the words you told me earlier?"

Kysy looked at me, "Oh yes, those. I am not sure. I had those words repeated in my head ever since the vision yet I could not manage to tell anyone. Then, there you were and I had to tell you that."

I looked at her perplex. She just shrugged, "It's strange, I know."

Kysy continued, "Usual for my visions I have to decipher every little detail. But in this one, it is as if someone was telling my what was happening. I wrote it down to remember and memorized it:

Human and Dragon are separated. Now, they must join for if the dragons let the humans die at the hands of the Shadows, the creatures, the dragons will soon follow. There is not choice. Human and Dragon must work together. Use your resources to watch them more closely than the first time.

He continued on for a while, but it isn't important right now. What is important is the fact that when the voice mentioned resources, my only thought was of Valeria."

Yvy exploded, "I am not sending her back with the humans unprotected!"

"Calm down, princess!" said Kysy "-Listen next time instead of assuming things. According to this vision, the humans have been fighting off the deformed creatures called the Shadows for a while. Now, however they are losing. We are forced to help because if humanity dies, we apparently will soon follow."

"I do not interact with humans," responded King Larius in a dangerously soft voice. Shit was about to go down!

Kysy seemed annoyed, "I know that, you doddering old fool. Everyone knows this and that is why the Shadows do not expect dragons to help. We kill the Shadows and come back here."

King Larius growled at the disrespect, "I will not deal with humans."

Kysy got a look on her face which meant that he played right into her hand, "You won't have to. Valeria will."

This time it is Cygun who exploded, "ABSOLUTELY NOT!"

"We must for our survival," retorted Kysy in an exasperated tone.

I got up, "I will do it."

This put a stop to all conversation in the room.

Larius was first to speak, "I will not send Val into human lands without protection. Even in the court, her life will be threatened."

I defended my choice, "I am not without protection. I have certain abilities due to my close proximity with you for most of my life. I can bring several dragons with me in order to negotiate. I will come back here once every week to assure my protection. It is the only way."

"I will not allow it," announced Larius.

I told him, "Has fighting Kysy's visions ever worked before?" I was talking about the reason Larius and Kysy hated each other.

Larius visibly slumped down, "No."

"Then, don't. You can make all the plans and in human land, you can communicate with me. It will be fine."

Larius finally begrudgingly agreed. Now, we have to make a plan.
