Chapter 1
I am going to write in a omniscient point of vue. I will describe all the thoughts, feelings of someone in third person. This might change later on.
The Flashbacks will be in italics and her thoughts in bold/italics
*********************************************
Valeria ran through the forest, hoping to leave her abusers behind. They were older thus bigger and were gaining on her. Her half-starved state did not help it either.
Valeria was determined to escape them. She would not have a repeat of what happened last time she got caught.
*Flashback*
Valeria had been accused of stealing bread from the village elder's house.
She denied it of course and she hadn't. But no one listens to the orphaned girl.
To the villagers, her very existence was a mistake. She never knew her mother, but the villagers told her that she sold herself to men. That she had so many lovers that no one knew who my father was and no one would ever claim her.
The village elder had sent his bullies to her hut, you can barely call it that due to the fact it was falling apart. Not knowing what to do, Valeria ran.
Before even taking three steps, they caught her. They tied her up and brought her to the village square.
She was threw to the ground to receive her punishment. No one but her in the village was punished this way. At only 7 3/4 years old, Valeria did not understand why everyone hated her.
The only person who cared for her was Grandma Ellie, the village crazy lady. She had died the day before her 7th birthday. It was then the abuse got worst without Grandma Ellie to protect her.
Helpless, the village elder gave her ten lashes from the whip. He was not gentle even in his old age. If Valeria had not been used to pain, she would have passed out.
But she was. In fact, this was her third whipping this month. Everyone always jeered at her and no one helped her. She took her lashes.
Then, to make it worse, the village elder announced, "She tried to run from her punishment for three minutes. In exchange for that, you will have three minutes to throw rocks and whatever you want at her."
That is exactly what the villagers did with no remorse. Though at the time, Valeria did not know this, but it could have been worse. Lately some of the men have been looking at Valeria sideways. It appeared that they would have enjoyed raping a helpless girl.
Three minutes later, she was covered in cuts and bruises. Valeria was also heavily bleeding. Everyone dispersed after untying her. From lack of strength, Valeria collapsed where she stood.
When she next woke, she was back in her hut, all bandaged. She never found out who did her the kindness, but it was best this way. Whoever helped her could have gotten punished for it.
She was determined never to be in such a situation again.
*Flashback over*
But here Valeria was, running from them as usual. She had been practicing her running and now could hold her own.
She had a small hidden cave behind the waterfall where she could hide until they forgot about her. Valeria just had to reach it before they caught up with her or saw her enter the cave.
Behind her, her abusers were yelling, "There is no where you can hide, Valeria! No one wants you! Come back here right now! Listen to your betters!"
She ignored as she had learned to do ever since this started. Their verbal abuse had been a constant presence during her childhood.
Valeria gave herself one more burst of speed to reach the cave before them. She saw the waterfall coming up. . .
Valeria then made the mistake of looking behind her, causing her to trip.
"Shit!" she curses. The bullies were too close and would see her enter the cave. If she did what she usually did, Valeria would be cornered in the cave.
So instead of doing that, she recovered from her trip and kept running. She ran and ran, farther than she had ever ventured before.
Her mind was overwhelmed with constant fear of being caught, leaving no space for rational thought.
She knew that Grandma Ellie always warned her away from the forest. She knew that their village was on the border of the dragon's land. She knew that the dragons killed any human intruder ever since the broken treaty 100 years ago. She knew that at 8 years old she shouldn't be here.
But Valeria couldn't bring herself to care anymore.
I'm better off killed by dragons than going back to my village. I can't live like that anymore.
Valeria eventually collapsed from the exhaustion of running around and settled under a tree. She was starting to freak out.
She had no idea where she was. On the bright side, her abusers didn't follow her or catch up with her.
The sun was setting and the forest was getting creepier.
Valeria started singing a song that Grandma Ellie used to sing all the time to keep her fears at bay. It wasn't a happy song, but the melody calmed her and reminded her of Grandma Ellie :
I'm tired of living the life I live;
I'm tired of being who I am;
I'm tired of those who surround me;
I'm tired of living this life I live;
I'm tired of the things I have to say;
I'm tired of the things I have to do;
I'm tired of this world I have to live in;
I'm tired of the secrets of the day;
I'm tired of the thoughts that I have thought;
And I'm tired everyday.
Valeria was just singing this song of comfort to her several times over when a huge noise scared her.
BOOM!
It shook the trees with their impact. But that wasn't what scared her. It was the apparition of the voices in her head. They paid her no heed and had a conversation.
The younger one who was the youngest daughter of the Dragon King said, "I swear that I saw a human girl be chased in here. I've been watching her for a while. She has done nothing. We need to get her onto human lands before guards kill her."
The older voice who was the Dragon Queen Cygun told her, "It isn't a good idea to defy your father. I'm only here to make sure you don't get hurt. I hope that the girl is alright, especially with such a pretty voice."
The youngest daughter of the Dragon King, Yvy, enjoyed spying on the humans who lived across the border. Young Valeria had caught her eye. Yvy hated the abuse she has to go through and that she couldn't help Valeria.
So, when she saw Valeria run across the border, running from the abusers, Yvy had to help. She got caught by her mother, Cygun, who agreed to help her help the human girl.
They had tracked her here and heard the most melodious voice ever. It held them in its' thrall until it suddenly stopped. Both of them wanted the girl safe because if King Larius knew of her existence she would be killed like all the other humans
Valeria however was terrified out of her mind. She had just peeked and saw two humongous dragons in front of her. To add on, she was hearing voices.
In an attempt to shut up the voices in her head, she yelled mentally, "SHUT UP!"
Both Cygun and Yvy heard the mysterious new voice who joined their mind-link. It was curious because there was no other dragon for miles.
Yvy asked her mother, "Could it be the human?"
"Maybe, but her psychic power would be off the charts at 8 years old too," replied Cygun.
Valeria who was starting to accept that the dragons were talking in her head told them, "This human has a name."
Again, both paused shocked that she could talk to them through the mind-link with no training, and no human has accessed their private mind-link before to talk back mentally.
Cygun recovered first, "Of course, honey. I am Cygun and this is Yvy. You are Valeria, aren't you? Yvy has been watching you for a while."
Valeria boldly demanded, "I am Valeria. Where am I?"
It was quite pleasant for Cygun and Yvy that someone spoke to them and demanded things of them so honestly. As the reigning royal family from the last 500 years, everyone was afraid of them and spoke to them with respect.
Yvy told her, "You are in dragon land."
With that, that was all it took for Valeria to faint. Between the exhaustion, the starvation and the shock, her body was out like a light.
Yvy and Cygun looked at each other hesitant. They didn't know what to do. If they dropped Valeria in human territory, she would be raped while unconscious. The dragons knew that much about the nature of men.
However, if Larius found the girl with them, Valeria would be killed.
It was no great decision. Yvy picked up Valeria in her claws and took off towards the castle. She wished to protect Valeria, the little girl who has been through so much already.
She had to.
