March 4, 2017: "Hurry, Savannah!" I yelled cheerfully as I stumbled over the table I was carrying. Savannah laughed at me and came to help. The volunteers were currently setting up their booths and tables. We even got a few sponsors! Dr. Pepper and a few other staff members were walking around and talking to everyone.
"Hey, Maxy," Alex yelled from behind. I looked back with confusion, I hadn't realized who it was. When I saw him, my eyes widened slightly. He grinned evilly and rushed towards us. We had no chance to run off, or get away. "Guess who's grandma made him come? And guess who's stuck with me for three whole hours?" He leaned down by my face slyly.
"Great..." I fake smiled. "Look we have more stuff to do, so get out of the way." I pushed passed him and walked to where the next table was going. Alex kind of hung around during most of the setup and while we worked. He was actually a big help, but I was pretty uncomfortable most of the time. After the whole thing, we took everything down.
"Man, we did great!" Savannah cheered, holding up the box of our profit.
"The food was awesome!" I cheered, pumping my fists in the air excitedly. Savannah face-palmed while laughing but she nodded in agreement. I grinned excitedly as I giggled. At one point while we spoke, Savannah put the box down on the bench beside us. My eyes glanced over to the box as we spoke. I looked back at Savannah then did a double take. "Wait- wait wait; where's the box?!" I asked, staring at the missing box's outline I pictured.
"What do you mean?" Savannah asked, turning to look. I pointed with confusion. "Where the hell did it go?!" Savannah yelled out, rather loudly. I hesitantly shrugged quickly as I too began to freak out. There were 8,000 dollars in there, in cash! Not a good place for that much profit, I know. We started hurriedly looking around the spot, throwing anything in the way behind us at random. "Crap," Savannah groaned as we sat, bowing our heads in shame. "How'd we lose so much in such a short time?!"
"We didn't lose it, someone look it," I mumbled back as I tried to keep my composure. "Damn." My eyes watered. I started sniffling, extreme frustration caused me to start crying. That happens a lot, actually.
"Why would they want to do that?" Savannah muttered back, her voice was so low I almost didn't hear her.
"Money," I answered.
"Hey guys-" Dr. Pepper announced cheerfully. "W-what's wrong?!" I looked up at him dully.
"All the money we made," Savannah started. She took a hesitantly deep breath. "It's gone."
"What, it can't be gone?!" Dr. Pepper chuckled at us. I gave him an annoyed look.
"Tell that to the missing box," I grumbled. He frowned. Charles walked over, he had a confused expression. I just dropped my head again and shook it.
"We can raise it again?" Dr. Pepper offered.
"Right, because a bunch of bakers will want to share their profit again. Especially with two kids who lost it already. They'd be so eager." I replied sarcastically.
"Max," Charles warned lowly. I glared back.
"We have to try again," Savannah announced, lifting her head confidently. I glanced up at her.
"What's the point?" I muttered back, looking at my jeans. "We won't be able to make that much again, especially not by summer. It took my elementary school three years to get 50,000 dollars- ow!" I whimpered, holding the back of my head. Charles hit me!
"Don't say that, punk. I bet my friends and I can set up some sort of booth at the high school's fair." He offered. Dr. Pepper hummed out an 'hmm'.
"I bet I could talk to Sherry about it." He agreed.
"See Max? It'll be fine!" Savannah promised. I sighed, shrugging.
"Debby Downer," Charles grumbled like a child.
"My name's not 'Debby'." I stuck my tongue out at him teasingly. He grinned slyly.
"What do you say, Max?" Savannah asked.
"Yeah, okay." I agreed with a small nod.
