Chapter 20
"Okay! We dropped off your friends what exactly do you mean 'oh hey I'm Maebelle Evans I'm delicate but not?!'" Lloyd said, folding his arms and sitting down on one of the chairs in his apartment.
Beforehand they had quickly and quietly dropped off Emma Heath and Tamara Reid in their rooms at their houses in the Rich District and made sure not to be seen (which luckily they weren't.)
Now, here they are back at Lloyd's apartment, and Lloyd Walker was confused on why Maebelle Evans knows how to work multiple guns, because when they first met she seemed like a harmless doll!
"O-Okay...! Listen, listen...! I don't know why or how long that organization had been stalking me, but it seems like... maybe... ten years-?" The raven haired girl got cut off.
"You've known how to work with guns since you were nine years old and you never said anything!" The male yelled, standing up.
"Well because I didn't think it was important...! I also told you there were things I didn't want to say about myself, that's why I'm not one to pry!" The blue eyed female explained, before looking down at the floor.
He thought for a moment before sighing to himself. Yeah, Mae knew people didn't like talking about certain things, and she also kept things quiet about herself, this must've been one of the things she didn't like saying about herself. "...Hey... do you mind me asking who taught you how to use a gun?"
"Huh?" The young woman looked up at him, surprised.
"You don't have to answer of course. I'm just curious." He said.
"...Um..." she sat down on one of the chairs at the table and he sat down across from her, already knowing it was going to be a long story. "...It was my grandfather... my grandmother Cynthia's husband... My grandfather thought I could be brave and secretly let me use a gun... at age nine..." Her tone of voice went sorrowful and her blue eyes went darker, and Lloyd noticed.
Ah... don't tell me... Lloyd thought, but he felt like he could already tell the end of the narrative before she continued.
"From age nine to age ten my grandfather was pretty much the only person I got along with... my grandfather had these dart boards on trees... since he didn't trust me shooting an actual living thing." The raven haired female let out a small, weak laugh. "He would teach me what I was doing correctly and incorrectly... Most of the time I did it correctly..." she gave the light green eyed male a weak smile. "But right before I turned ten... the last time I saw my grandfather alive..." Mae tilted her head upwards a little, trying to keep her tears in. "He got attacked by a wild animal... and... I wanted to try and help... but... I didn't want the bullet to hit my grandfather... my grandfather... he died... I couldn't do anything, I couldn't even move, that's why the animal didn't come towards me...!" The female said, and it seems just the memory of that day made her upset again.
"I killed him..." The dark haired young woman cried. "I killed my grandfather...! And my parents were furious...! With how I wasn't their fragile daughter for that one year and with how I murdered him...!"
"But...you didn't kill him...! It was an animal!" The white haired male said. "If you did anything, you probably would've died too!"
"Lloyd...! It was me...! I'm no delicate person! I have blood on my hands...!" The blue eyed girl said, covering her mouth, tears streaming her face.
I guess that doll... one that breaks if you touch it... finally broke... He thought. "Mae... did anyone else find out?" He asked. She shrugged, wiping the tears from her face.
"I don't know... I was only nine... however if anyone did, it's probably covered up by now..." She said, "The Poor District will always be blamed for the Rich District's mistakes... I'm sorry..."
"It's not your fault. It's the way the stupid system is run." Lloyd said.
Mae started sniffling. "I guess when I said 'secretly' it wasn't as secretly as I hoped... Considering that game I played at the small festival my siblings thought I could win things..." The raven haired girl said, wiping her eyes with her hands.
That's right... her brothers wanted her to play that shooting game, and she hit it right on the dot every time until I startled her. The male thought. I guess her parents were the only ones who didn't know until she was around ten... Lloyd paused for a moment, his light green eyes widened. Wait. No. That's not correct. When she was nine her brothers wouldn't have even been born yet... and her sister probably wouldn't remember anything... so how'd they know... did those brats perhaps overhear something?
The whisper white haired male stood up. "Mae, we're going to your place. I want to ask the brats something."
"H-Huh?" The raven haired girl asked. "O-Okay...?" Mae mumbled, a bit confused, standing up as well.
~
"Alright, you three listen, I'm going to be straightforward with you guys-" Lloyd said, slamming the door to Mae's room.
Audrey cut him off, however. "Is this about the mask thing, geez that was forever ago. I'm sorry I hurt your feelings, now get over it." She said, folding her arms, a look of annoyance on her face.
"Audrey!" Mae yelled, covering the younger girl's mouth. "Be nice!"
"No, this isn't about the mask thing." The older male said irritated.
"Then what?" Kyle asked, shrugging. Both twins had been sitting on either side of Audrey on Mae's bed and all three of the younger kids were looking genuinely bored.
"I'm getting to that!" The elder male yelled, before sighing, trying to calm down. Alright let's hope these kids don't give me a migraine before the end of the night... "So, thing one and thing two-" the green eyed male said referring to the twins "-you two knew Mae could shoot well, considering you two wanted her to play that 'shooting' festival game, how come?"
"Huh? Is that really all you're asking?" Carter said, all three were staring at him blankly.
"Just answer the fucking question!" The white haired male yelled, seeming to be on his last nerve.
"Hey! Watch your language!" Mae yelled. "...and please answer the question."
Both twin's eyebrows were twitching before Carter answered. "We don't remember exactly but, when we were six or seven we overheard our parents say something about how Maebelle could shoot things..."
"But that was way after the years I learned how to use a gun." Mae said.
"...Oh!" Kyle started, which caused everyone to look at him. "I think I remember now...! Dad said that Maebelle was good with a gun... and that... she... left someone for dead!"
"You what?!" Audrey said shocked, and Mae had an expression of guilt on her face.
"Listen! If she did anything she would've died too!" Lloyd said.
"Wait- I'm confused! What are you talking about?! Maebelle knows how to use a gun, we know that according to the festival game! But she left someone for dead?! What do you mean if she did anything she would've died too?!" Audrey asked.
Lloyd looked to Mae, which caused her three siblings to look at her too, the three raised one eyebrow on their heads in unison.
"It really isn't my place to tell you." The white haired male said, looking back at the three kids.
Everyone stayed quiet for a moment "...Maebelle...?" Carter asked.
"Umm... the man 'I left for dead'... was our grandfather... I'm sorry you never got to know him... because it was my fault..." Mae explained.
The nineteen year old then explained how he taught her how to use a gun within the year she turned nine to ten however he got attacked by a wild animal before she turned ten years old, and she didn't want to take the risk of shooting because she could've killed their grandfather, and if she moved the animal probably would've heard and killed her too.
It was quiet for a couple minutes, since her siblings were trying to comprehend all of that in one go. "...Maebelle, that really isn't your fault..." Audrey finally said.
"Yeah... if you moved it would've sensed you and you would've died, and you didn't want to kill our grandfather. In the end the animal killed our grandfather, not you." Kyle explained.
"Why don't you blame me?!" The oldest sister asked. "I could've done something... but I was frozen... I was too scared...!"
"People can be scared, Maebelle!" Audrey yelled. "It's been ten years, I'm sure if he were here he'd forgive you!"
"That's exactly it! I've been hiding this from you guys for ten years. I'm so sorry..." the oldest dark haired child said, a guilty look in her dark blue eyes as she glanced away from the four of them.
"You're saying this as if we are going to stop loving you." Audrey said with a smile.
Huh? Mae looked back at the group, with a surprised expression. Right now she just wanted too... the young woman just wanted too... cry... "uff... wah...! I'm so sorry...!" Were the only words that could form in her mouth right now as she covered her face with her hands.
"Maebelle?!" Her siblings yelled, shocked.
~
About two hours after Lloyd had left it was late and Maebelle had decided to go to bed.
Was it really not my fault...? The girl thought before shaking her head. No. We already established this with Lloyd and my siblings, these are just late night thoughts creeping up on you Maebelle!
"It's been a long day... I need to stop thinking and go to bed..." the raven haired female mumbled before closing her eyes.
After about fifteen minutes of sleep she had felt a heavier weight on top of her. The young woman quickly opened her blue eyes.
Maebelle was shocked. "I-It's you...!"
"It's me~!" A woman's voice said, she had short blonde hair and had glaring teal eyes.
"G-Get off of me...!" The blue eyed female yelled, trying to push her off, to which Makayla simply just forced her arms down with ease.
"Hey! Hey! Hey!" The blonde yelled. "I'm not going to attack you! I just want to talk!"
"And why should I believe that?!" Maebelle yelled. "After what you have pulled!"
"I know! I know! I did some bad things~! But you did some bad things too, like to your grandfather, correct?" The teal eyed woman smirked.
The raven haired young woman felt her stomach and chest tighten before speaking again. "...Fine... what do you want to talk about...?"
"It's about Lloyd." Makayla said before taking her hands off her arms, however she was still sitting on her abdomen.
Lloyd? Maebelle thought. "What about him?" The girl inquired, raising an eyebrow.
"When you first met did you notice anything off about him?" The teal eyed woman questioned the dark blue eyed female.
"Off? Umm no? It was weird that he was lying about a bird so I would not find his 'WANTED' flier, but other than that I thought he was... cute." Maebelle explained nervously.
The blonde smirked. "Cute, huh?" She started. "What if I told you..." she took out a knife and held it dangerously close to the other female's throat and the raven haired girl gulped. "He thought about killing and stealing from you! Then when he didn't he decided to play around with you!"
"Wait-! What?!" The younger woman said. "I-I thought you just wanted to talk...! A-And Lloyd wanted to do what?!" The young woman yelled, highly confused.
"You heard me." Makayla said, before putting her knife away. "Lloyd's just been playing with you."
"L-Lloyd said he only kills people who deserve it! And Lloyd wouldn't do that...! You're just being a-!" The blue eyed girl got cut off.
"Find my tell!" Makayla cut her off, she even put her hands up.
Maebelle had looked around for any sign... any sign at all...
That meant...
Lloyd really debated on killing her when they first met. Then he decided to play around after he didn't kill her.
Her blue eyes widened. "Did... Did Lloyd really tell you this?"
"I had figured it out, then decided to ask him just to make sure." The blonde woman shrugged, Makayla then grabbed Maebelle's chin to whisper into her ear. "And it looks like I was correct~" The Campbell woman leaned back, letting go of the other girl's chin, and then she smiled. Yet, Maebelle knew that her smile wasn't innocent in the slightest.
No... no that's not true...! "Shut up! Shut up and get off of me...!" Maebelle yelled, shaking her head. "That's not true! Something is definitely wrong here!"
"You're just in denial." The teal eyed female said. "Why not ask him the next time you go over to his apartment!"
The raven haired young woman froze. "Fine! Just go away! Leave me alone!"
"You're going to be so upset when you realize I'm right~" the blonde said. The younger female's blue eyes widened, she felt like there was a lot more behind those words.
"W-What do you mean?" Maebelle asked, nervously.
"You'll see~" Makayla said before heading out through the window.
Maebelle shakily got up on her knees, feeling like she was about to scream. She grabbed her pillow and slammed her face into it. "GRAH...!" WHAT THE HELL?! The raven haired girl thought, she picked her face up from it, and threw her pillow at her closet, knocking some things off, not caring to pick them up.
Why should I even believe that psycho...?! The blue eyed young woman thought. She then laid back down. "...She didn't have a tell though..." the Evans young woman mumbled. "Today has been long..." she repeated "and my room is dark, I'm probably just tired... but I'm definitely going to interrogate Lloyd tomorrow." She said, closing her eyes and turning to the side.
