Chapter eleven
Alec's phone made a noise and he startled, stepping back so quickly from Magnus that he almost lost his balance. Magnus seemed just as startled, if not even more. There was a foreign expression on his face, when Alec stared at him, one he couldn't decipher. He fished out his phone, trying not to think about how close he had been to kissing the man in front if him. He looked at the phone and back at Magnus, who had turned his back on him. "It's Simon, he needs me to go over the photo..." Alec said, trailing off a little and Magnus turned around again, smiling. His eyes seemed... sad. "Of course. I'll be going to get ready. Let me know when we can formulate a plan." the conman said, waving his hand elegantly and turned on his heel, stalking out of the room just as soon as Alec had nodded towards him. The bountyhunter breathed out. He felt like Magnus might have been mad at him. It didn't matter, though, because Alec couldn't go around kissing the people he was supposed to catch and dispose. But as hard as Alec tried, he couldn't see Magnus as one of those people. Way too quickly had the man found a way into Alec's heart.
He shook his head, trying to rid himself of Magnus's breath against his lips. He went down to the computer room, founding Simon sitting behind the desk. "Hey, you okay? You look pale." Simon asked and Alec nodded quickly. "Just a headache. Is this it?" Alec changed the subject and stared at the screen. There was Clary and Jonathan, in an alleyway in front of a cafe. They looked to be having a conversation and both were wearing attire that said 'we don't want to draw attention to ourselves'. It looked insanely real. "Simon, this is amazing. It's like this actually happened." Alec said, awe evident in his voice. "Thanks." Simon said, looking relieved and a little shy. Alec patted his shoulder and went back upstairs.
After a few hours, everything was ready, all they needed to do, was to have Magnus contact Valentine, in hopes that he would take the bait. They were all in the ops room, waiting for the conman to emerge. He did, looking much like the first time Alec had met him. He was dressed all in black, which was weird, considering the way Magnus usually liked to dress - but even he knew when to act all business. His black trousers allowed him to move quickly and over the black shirt he was wearing a long black coat. His hair were still full of blue glitter, though. It made Alec smile a little, but he forced his face to be serious when Isabelle caught him, giving him a strange look. Magnus clapped his hands. "Alright, let's get this party started!" he said enthusiastically and Alec gave him a glare. Magnus smirked a bit and then took out his phone, waving it in front of them. "I already texted him, by the way. Well, not him. Raphael, I still have his number from before. He delivered my message to Valentine, who is willing to meet!" the man stated, his eyes gleaming with excitement. "That's good, but we have to be careful, okay? Isabelle and I will be coming with you, to keep an eye-" Alec started but Magnus cut him off. "If you two come along, he will surely either kill me and you, or won't even bother to show up. He will spot you a mile away. Either you stay here, or, if you really need to be there, I suggest you find a hiding spot at least a few blocks away." Magnus replied.
Isabelle crossed her elbows but looked thoughtful. "He's got a point, Alec. We can't do anything, but be ready to help if need be. We might as well go with Magnus's plan." she said, looking at Alec reproachfully. Alec groaned. "Fine. When are we leaving?" he asked, eyeing Magnus. He looked so damn good, even in all black and his wicked smile made Alec shiver. "At 1 a.m. He sent me a location, here." he said, showing Simon his phone. The nerd glanced at it and then typed it into the computer, making a red dot appear just outside the city. "Isn't that the abandoned mine?" Jace asked now, standing next to Clary. They seemed closer than before and Alec suspected, that the fact that Clary was being hunted by her murderous brother had activated a protective side of Jace usually reserved for Isabelle. He smiled to himself, but nodded. "Looks like it. Alright, we'll be here." he said, pointing to a spot just a few miles further from the red dot. "Magnus will go in, try to convince Valentine that he is on their side and we will wait for him. If he succeeds, we will all meet back here. If something goes wrong..." Alec trailed off, giving Isabelle a look and she nodded, clicking her tongue. "Then he will regret it, immensely." she smiled, her perfect teeth gleaming under the lamps.
"That's great an all, but why would Valentine believe Magnus is a mole for us? I mean, he is not that stupid." Jace said now, his brow furrowed. Everyone was silent for a moment. "He's right. Although it might be unbelievable that we are helping Magnus and he is helping us, Valentine would not fall for it. We need something to show him, that even though Magnus is under our protection, he is still a good source for Valentine to spy on us." Hodge mentioned, leaning onto the wall. Simon coughed. "Um, maybe we could let Magnus give out some information about the whereabouts of our safehouses? I mean, I know it's a longshot but..." he sounded very hesitant and blushed when Isabelle gave him a bright smile. "That's actually a good idea." she said, impressed. Alec nodded, the gears in his head working at full speed. "We could tell the personnel, to expect the attack, that Valentine will probably administer after hearing this information from Magnus. That way, Valentine would see that Magnus is telling the truth but at the same time, doesn't care whether or not we take any causalities. And at the same time, our own people would be fairly safe, or at least warned." Alec said, leaning down to type at the keyboard.
Hodge scrunched his nose. "I don't like the idea, but I guess we have no other choice... which safehouse?" he asked and Alec pressed a button, making another map appear. He pointed to a building. "Number 34. It's mostly unused anyways, lots of weapons though, but we can deal with the loss. More even, Valentine will probably be pleased that Magnus led him to such a full warehouse. I think we have 5 people in it right at the moment - the Linetti twins, Caspar, Joan... I think Rita was there, too, but we have to check the names in order to make sure." Alec continued, listing the names on his fingers. He paused and looked at the others. "I'll warn them, while Isabelle and I are waiting for Magnus. In the meantime, I need Jace to keep an eye on Clary..." this earned a small groan from Clary and a smirk from Jace "...And Simon, can you check on the names, in safehouse 34? And send them to me. And make a quick overview of what supplies we will be losing. Make sure that the program, that wipes the data from the computers over there is working." he finished, listing off their assignments. Hodge stared at him in approval and got up. "Alright, you heard your team leader. Get to work. Oh, and Magnus." he said, pausing a little when Magnus turned to look at him questioningly. "Don't even think about double crossing us. Alec trusts you and that's good enough for me, but if you make even a slight move, that might indicate you screwing us over, you're dead. I'll see to it myself." Hodge said and then gave the other man a cold smile.
When he left, Magnus gave a scoff. "A real ray of sunshine, isn't he?" he asked and Isabelle have a small laugh. She clicked her way over to Alec and Magnus, who were standing next to each other a little way apart, and she flinged an arm over the both of them, placing herself between them. "Alright, boys, let's go do what we do best." she said cheerfully and Magnus snorted. "You mean drink and party? 'Cause I don't think that was in the job description." he replied and the girl gave him a smile. "I meant, complete a mission, kick some ass and look fabulous while doing it." she announced. "Alexander might need some help with that last part." Magnus stated, setting a hand on Isabelle's lower back, while Alec rolled his eyes. Jace snorted behind them and Alec threw him with a pencil, that he picked up from the table. Jace ducked at the right time and gave him a hurtful look. "No need to get defensive, we all know he speaks the truth." the blonde said, but before Alec could retort, Clary had grabbed Jace's arm. "Come on, I'm hungry and you're cooking. I have to get something out of being watched 24/7." the redhead claimed, pulling him with her and out the room. Isabelle gave Simon a wink. "See you later, sweetie." she said, making Simon turn beet red and escorted the two men out, still walking between them, like they were going on a shopping spree.
"Iz, you do realize I'm still much taller than you, even with those heels. My neck hurts." Alec stated, removing himself from under Isabelle's arm and rubbed his neck. Isabelle flipped him off and turned to Magnus. "So, I just wanted to say, that don't do anything stupid and stay alive. I have a feeling that I'll never hear the end of the drama from this one, if you are going to get stabbed, or worse." she said nodding towards the taller male, completely ignoring the way Alec stammered 'what?' beside him. Magnus raised an eyebrow and smiled brightly at Isabelle, enjoying Alec's predicament. "Don't worry, it's way too fun to tease your brother to stop now." Magnus replied, making Isabelle grin and Alec turn red. "Just get in." Alec grumbled, reaching the black SUV. Isabelle rolled her eyes, and with a flick of her hair, got in, making sure her coat covered the gun tucked into her jeans. When Alec went to round the car, Magnus stopped him briefly, placing his hand on Alec's arm. He raised his gaze, seeing Magnus watch him tentatively. "In all seriousness, if I really do manage to get myself killed... I just wanted to say thank you." the older man said and Alec tilted his head to the side, looking puzzled and annoyed at the same time.
"You are not going to die. And why are you thanking me?" he asked, noticing how Magnus's hand was not tightly gripping him, but slid down his arm, reaching his fingers. With a jolt he realized Magnus's fingers were hovering over his and the conman looked him in the eyes as he very gently let his finger go between Alec's, so that they were almost holding hands. Alec couldn't move, when Magnus leaned just a little bit closer. "For trusting me. And for not seeing me, like everybody else." he whispered. Alec had the same urge he did yesterday - he wanted to kiss Magnus, it was like a calling. He could feel the intoxicating smell of sandalwood on the other man and he was subconsciously leaning in. Magnus smiled sadly and his hand slipped away, when he took a step to the side to let Alec pass. The bounty hunter was suddenly shaken from his reverie and he felt his heart clench a little with disappointment. Then he remembered that Izzy was also in the car and he cleared his throat. It was probably for the best, Isabelle might've had a heart attack. It would've also spoke against everything Alec had ever believed in - his rules and his duty. However hard he tried, he knew he couldn't lie to himself. Magnus was making him see everything with a new perspective, he had yet to decide whether that was a good thing.
Magnus opened the door to take the passenger seat, that Izzy so kindly had left for him and Alec got into the driver's side. Isabelle was examining her nails, a grin on her face. "Ready to go?" she asked with a faked innocence, and Alec knew she had been watching them. He forced himself to be calm and collected as he started the car. He gave Magnus a quick glance, whose side profile looked amazing in the night light. His jaw-line was sharp and a strand of his spiked hair fell to his forehead. His eyes were staring ahead and his lips were set in a hard line. Alec suppressed a sigh as he adjusted the rearview mirror, looking at Izzy. "Let's get this over with." he said and sounded a lot more tired than he planned to. He rolled down the windows, so the air in the car wouldn't feel so full of tension to him.
After they had made it to the place where Alec and Izzy would stay, they got out and Magnus and Alec switched sides. Isabelle stood at the hood of the car while Alec held the door open, so Magnus could get in. He did but Alec didn't let him shut the door yet. "Alright, you've got the photo? And Clary's phone with the text?" he asked and Magnus rolled his eyes at him. "Yes, dad." he said, giving Alec a smirk and the taller man swallowed. "And the gun?" he asked, ignoring Magnus's flirtatious grin. Magnus patted his chest. "Never leave without my baby." he said proudly and Alec nodded, looking at his watch. "You better go, it's almost 1." he said, but didn't let do of the door. A few minutes passed, when Magnus stared at him and Alec stared back. Magnus decided to end the silence. "Um, Alexander? You have to let go of the door." he said, slightly amused, even now. Alec shook his head. "Right, right. I just-" he started and the gave a look towards Isabelle. He did it accidentally, in fact, not even knowing why he wanted a minute alone with Magnus. He never kept anything from her. But Isabelle smiled immediately and turned discreetly. "I'll go check the perimeter, see where we can settle down until you come back, Magnus. Stay alive!" she shouted, while walking way, hips swaying.
Magnus chuckled, but looked back at Alec quizzically. Alec felt his heart speed up. Now that he was alone with Magnus, his mind felt foggy all of a sudden. He wished he didn't fear for the others man's life like he did. He wished he didn't feel the warmth towards him either. "Alexander?" Magnus asked, breaking his trail of thought. He looked up at him, eyes shining in the moonlight. Alec shook his head. "Just...come back, okay?" he said, knowing how he sounded. Like there was something between them. When there shouldn't have been. Magnus gave him a sweet smile, not like the one's before full of flirt and sexual undertone. This one was sincere. "Alright, I promise." the conman said and Alec felt like he really meant it. He cleared his throat, letting go of the door and taking a few steps back. Magnus shut the door, looking out the open window at him. Alec nodded and turned around.
When he heard the engine start, he closed his eyes. Fuck it, he thought. He opened his eyes, turning around quickly and walking back to the car. Magnus was just about to get moving, when he heard Alec shout his name. He looked towards him. Alec saw the confusion in his face, when he reached the car. "Alec, what-" the conman asked, but Alec just leaned down, grabbing Magnus's collar through the open window and kissed him, right on the lips. He felt Magnus tense for a second, surprised by his actions, but then his lips moved against Alec's, kissing him back. It wasn't a particularly long kiss, but it sure as hell made Alec's toes curl and his heart jump with joy. He felt so out of breath, when Magnus's hand went to the back of his neck and the man pulled him closer. Their tongues met swiftly, for some seconds, but to Alec, it was the best thing he had ever felt. Every pent up feeling inside him came rushing back and he realized, that he didn't want Magnus to leave. Not ever.
When Magnus pulled back, Alec let him, albeit reluctantly. The conman's eyes shone back at him, the green with a glint of yellow and they looked at him mischievously. "I'll be seeing you, Alexander." he simply said and Alec stood back, letting the car drive off into the night. He looked up at the sky and sighed. Well, crap. Now he had even more things to worry about. Like the fact that Isabelle had probably saw them. He looked around, spotting her on a nearby hill, eyes ahead and her rifle set onto the ground. She was eating a candy bar, her face knowing when Alec approached him. "Said goodbye, did you?" she asked and Alec groaned, sitting next to her. "Don't." he said, rubbing his face. "So, you kissed him. So what?" she asked, like it was the most normal thing. "So what? He's a conman! Our bounty! You were the one along with Jace, who didn't trust him in the first place!" Alec said, while Isabelle licked her fingers of the chocolate. She rolled her eyes at him. "That was before. Look, I still think it's totally weird. But I've seen enough to realize, that not everything is black and white. And you said it yourself, Magnus is not a bad guy." Isabelle stated, moving to lie on the grass, looking through the rifle's stetoscope. "I don't even know why I did it." Alec said quietly and Isabelle looked at him with a soft expression.
"Because you care about him, big brother." she said, following Alec's gaze that was set on the retreating car, that was leaving a trace of dust in the air. The full moon was casting a silver shade on them and Alec sighed deeply again, feeling an unfamiliar ache in his heart. "That's the problem, not the solution." he said, ignoring his sisters confused expression.
