Chapter Twenty-five - Daughter, or son?
"Okay, so are we finding out, or aren't we? I don't remember us reaching a decision." Tom chuckled, the pair of us walking to the hospital with our hands joined and fingers intertwined as we headed to my first pregnancy scan. I sighed and looked up at him.
"I mean, I get if you don't want to, but I think that it'll be a good thing to know. Means that we can be more prepared in terms of names and stuff, no?" I asked.
"Yeah, I guess that that's true, love. So, we're decided? We're finding out?" He asked.
"If you're okay with that too." I gulped. He gave me a small smile.
"Yeah. I'm okay with that, sweetheart." He nodded, making me smile and bite my lip as I held his arm with my spare hand. There was now an extra layer of excitement to this appointment, my heart fluttering at the idea of finding out whether we'd be having a little boy or girl as Tom and I got to the hospital. We headed in and got to the lift, the metal box taking us up to the pregnancy ward for our appointment. I bit my lip, my heart already jumping in excitement as we walked up to the front desk.
"Hi, we're Mr. and Mrs. Holland, we're here for an ultrasound." Tom nodded.
"Okay, take a seat, the doctor will be out shortly." The nurse spoke. Tom nodded again and gave her a small smile before taking my hand and leading us to a couple of seats. I held my bump as I sat down, the change barely noticeable yet, but I still loved it.
"You okay, sweetheart?" Tom asked, my husband looking at me as he put his hand on my thigh.
"Yeah, just still can't fully believe that they're in there, you know? I can't feel them moving yet, but obviously the bump is starting to grow, and I love that. I love them." I chuckled and shook my head.
"Good, love, because so do I. You've got another five months of that feeling, too." He smiled.
"I know, and I can't wait." I giggled, making Tom chuckle and kiss my head as a doctor walked into the waiting room.
"Mrs. Holland?" She asked.
"That's me." I nodded as Tom stood up and gently put his hand out for me to take.
"How long do you have to go?" the doctor asked as I stood up, and we walked through to her office.
"This is my first appointment, actually. The pregnancy test was one of those ones that tells you how far along you are, and it said that I was roughly nine weeks along, and that was a week ago." I nodded, Tom sitting down on the chair beside the examination bed as I sat down on the bed itself.
"You guys excited? I know that finding out happened recently, but a lot of parents get excited as soon as they find out." She smiled as she turned the ultrasound machine on, and I pulled my top up to reveal my slowly but surely growing bump.
"That was definitely us, we've been over the moon since we found out." Tom chuckled as he gently took my hand.
"That's what we like to hear. Okay, Mrs. Holland, this is going to be cold." The doctor warned before spreading the cold jelly across my skin. I winced slightly at the coldness of it, my hand tightening around Tom's as he raised it and softly kissed my skin
"Alright, let's see what's happening with baby Holland." She mumbled as her gaze stayed glued to the screen.
"Okay, so everything looks good, we're exactly where we want to be at three months. Which, given what has developed so far, I can confirm is how far along you are exactly." The doctor nodded as she looked back at us. Tom and I just stared at the screen, tears pricking both of our eyes at the ultrasound image of our baby, our first child. I still couldn't believe that we were this lucky, that we were expecting a baby. And it only made it feel ten times more real to see them for the first time on the screen. I bit my lip and looked at Tom, my heart warming at the sight of tears rolling down my husband's cheeks.
"You okay, Tommy?" I checked. He nodded and gave me a small smile as he kissed my hand again.
"Yeah, it's just...that's our baby, sweetheart. That's our child, and he or she is already so beautiful." He smiled and shook his head. I returned it and bit my lip, more tears pricking my own eyes at how emotional and happy Tom already was at the sight of our baby as I looked back at the screen.
"Speaking of he or she, do you want to know the baby's sex?" the doctor asked. Tom and I looked at each other, our eyebrows raising at each other as we silently agreed again. I raised my eyebrow and bit my lip, Tom nodding and giving me a small smile in response before looking past me, and at the doctor.
"Please." Tom smiled. The doctor nodded and returned it before looking back at the screen.
"Well, congratulations, Mr. and Mrs. Holland, you're having a baby girl." She stated. My eyes widened, a choke leaving my lips and my heart jumping in my chest as I looked back at Tom. My husband had had the same reaction, yet more tears streaming down his face as his grip on my hand tightened.
"We're having a little girl, Tommy!" I squealed.
"I can't wait." Tom smiled and shook his head before kissing me.
My eyes fluttered open as a wave of nausea moved through my body and promptly pulled me out of the gentle grasp of sleep. I groaned and looked down at my stomach, the morning sickness still just as bad as it had been before I even knew that I was pregnant as I looked at my growing bump.
"You can never give me a break, darling, huh." I chuckled and shook my head before starting to look around. I looked at the time, a groan leaving my lips as my alarm clock read two-fifteen a.m. I sighed and rolled over as I reached my arm out to put it around Tom's waist. My eyes opened again as it collided with the sheets instead, making my eyebrows furrow as I sat up and looked around our bedroom in search of my husband.
"Tommy?" I called out as I stood up and headed to our door. I opened it and walked out, my eyes looking around our apartment as I searched for Tom.
"Tom?" I called out again as I wandered into the living room.
"Hmm?" he mumbled from the sofa, making me sigh as he was hunched over the coffee table, and his eyes stayed on whatever he was looking at.
"Why are you up, Tommy?" I asked quietly as I sat down next to him, and rested my hand against his cheek. He leant into my touch immediately and gave me a small smile as he put his hand over mine.
"I love you, sweetheart, but you move a lot in your sleep when you're not pregnant, add a baby to the mix, and Jesus." He chuckled and shook his head.
"I'm sorry." I returned the chuckle and bit my lip.
"It's okay, my love, it's not like it's your fault. I'm just thinking of baby names for our perfect daughter." He smiled as he looked down at my bump and rested his hand against it. I returned his smile and bit my lip, my heart only falling in love with Tom more given how he was already treating our daughter as I cupped my hand over his and looked at the notepad that was on the coffee table.
"What names do you have so far?" I asked as I rested my head against his shoulder.
"Jessy, Hannah, Olivia, Charlotte, Elizabeth-."
"Not Elizabeth." I shook my head. Tom looked at me with furrowed eyebrows.
"Why not, darling? It's a nice name." he scoffed.
"Yeah, it is, but 'Elizabeth' has been the middle name of every girl in my family for generations, so I want her to have it as a middle name too." I nodded. Tom returned it and bit his lip as he looked back at the list.
"Okay, that's fair. So 'Elizabeth', but I also want to incorporate mum's name in there somewhere, so how about 'Elizabeth' and 'Nicola' as her middle names? I know that it might be seen as a little pretentious to give her two middle names, but it's the only way to make it work." he mumbled, his eyes staying glued to the paper as he worked it out.
"I don't think that it's pretentious, I think that it's beautiful." I smiled.
"Good, darling, because so do I." He returned the smile, making mine wide as Tom crossed the name 'Elizabeth' off of the list.
"So that leaves us with Jessy, Hannah, Olivia and Charlotte. Which one is it?" he asked. I thought and bit my lip as I rested my head against his shoulder again. One name in particular was sticking out to me, something just feeling perfect about it, even before she was here. I just had to hope that Tom felt the same way about it.
"Which one do you like most?" I asked. He looked at the page and bit his lip.
"I want to call her that." He spoke, making my eyes waver and my heart jump in happiness as he pointed to the exact name on the page that I had also fallen in love with.
"I agree. It's a beautiful name." I smiled. Tom returned it and gently kissed my head before turning back to the paper.
"Okay. So that's what our daughter is going to be called." He nodded, making me return it as he underlined the name on the paper. My eyes widened as I suddenly felt some movement.
"Ow." I hissed slightly, making Tom look at me as I cupped my bump and looked down at it.
"You okay, darling?" he asked as his eyebrows furrowed in concern.
"Yeah, your daughter just wants me to go to bed." I chuckled.
"You better get to bed, then." Tom smiled as he stood up.
"Do I have to?" I whined and over-dramatically lulled my head back.
"My love, you're pregnant, you need rest." He chuckled as he gently took my hands and stood me up.
"Boo." I teased, making Tom smirk and shake his head as he curled his arm around my waist, and we headed back to our bedroom.
