Chapter Three - The day of the wedding
~Two weeks later~
"Haley, you look stunning." I gushed as she stood in front of me on the small platform in her wedding dress, and I moved around her body to make sure that everything was just as it should have been.
"Do I really?" she sheepishly smiled.
"Yes! You look fucking amazing! Harrison isn't going to be able to take his eyes off of you." I shook my head, my eyes on her veil as I fixed it, and made sure that it fell correctly.
"Never mind him not taking his eyes off of me, I'm leaving and walking back down the aisle if he doesn't cry." She scoffed.
"Damn fucking right." I smirked, making her laugh and nod. She bit her lip and looked at me.
"Thank you, by the way. I haven't really said that throughout this whole process, so thank you." She smiled. I returned her gaze with furrowed eyebrows.
"For what?" I chuckled.
"For being an amazing maid of honour, what do you think? I couldn't have pulled off planning my dream wedding if not for you." She shook her head.
"Aw, Haley...stop being all soppy, you'll ruin both of our faces if you make us cry." I chuckled, making her smirk and shake her head as she looked ahead again. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
"Come in!" I called, not bothering to look and see who it was as I focused on Haley's dress.
"Is the bride ready?" my eyes widened as I recognised the voice immediately, my heart jumping in my chest as all of the memories from a fortnight ago came flooding back. Specifically the memories of the admittedly incredible night that I had spent with the boy. I looked up at Haley and clenched my jaw, a sigh leaving my lips as she smirked down at me. I didn't even have to ask her to know exactly what she was thinking, and that was without her having the knowledge that we'd ended up sleeping together. I turned around and gave Tom a small smile as the boy walked into the room. And I had to admit, he looked really fucking good. His body was clad in a similar suit to the one that he had worn at the rehearsal dinner, a crisp white dress shirt sitting underneath a black dress jacket, black trousers, a navy tie and black shoes. Given that he was Harrison's best man, he had the flower that had been picked for the wedding also clipped to his breast pocket to add that nice little pop of colour. And his hair, god, his hair. The boy obviously hadn't had a hair cut in a while, and hadn't put gel in it this morning either, but that gave him the handsomely rugged look of loose curls, and finished off the look that made him look perfect. I snapped back, Tom returning the look as he saw me.
"Hello, you. Long-time, no see." He smirked.
"Shut up and help me get her shoes on." I smiled sarcastically as I held up her heels to show him. He chuckled and nodded as he walked up to us.
"Here." I mumbled as I handed him a shoe. He got down on one knee and started to move the ruffles of Haley's dress to find her foot.
"Wow, there's a lot of dress here, Jesus." He scoffed as he eventually found Haley's foot and put the shoe on, me doing the same with the other foot.
"Brilliant. Now that the bride has shoes on, are you guys ready?" he asked as he stood up again.
"Yeah, I think so. Let's go, Haley." I nodded, Tom returning the nod as he turned and started to head back to the door.
"Hey, wait." He mumbled, making me look at him as he turned back to me, just like he'd done the morning that he snuck out of my hotel room.
"Yeah?" I asked. He leant in slightly, making me gulp as my eyes flicked down to look at his lips that were just by my ear.
"You look stunning." He whispered. I smiled and bit my lip, my gaze moving down and my mind being very thankful for the makeup on my face covering my blushing cheeks at his words. After all, I was already in trouble given how he could make me feel after no more than a couple of hours of knowing each other, that would only be made worse if Tom also knew the effect that he had on me. I bit my lip and looked back up at him.
"Thank you, Tom. You don't look too bad yourself." I nodded, making him chuckle and nod in response as his gaze flicked between my eyes and my lips.
"I'll see you ladies out there." He smiled, his eyes briefly looking at Haley before flicking to me, and staying on me as he went back to the door and left the room. I gulped and took a deep breath, my heart pounding harshly in my chest as I tried to recompose myself. I was here to help my best friend marry the love of her life, not to get horny...again...over his best friend. And so, helping Haley to marry Harrison was what I'd do. I forced the smile back onto my lips before turning around to look at her.
"Let's get you married." I smiled, making her squeal and clap giddily as I gave her my hand, and started to help her off of the platform that she'd been standing on.
The ballroom doors opened, and I started to walk as the music played. I made an effort to stare ahead and ignore the fact that everyone's eyes were on me. The only saving grace was that once Haley came out, everyone would be focused on her instead, something that I was feeling insanely grateful for. Well. All but one person would be focusing on Haley instead of me. Tom's lips curled into a smile as he saw me walk down the aisle, the boy's gorgeous chocolate eyes subtly flicking up and down my dress-covered figure as he seemingly checked me out, for what must have already been the hundredth time today. I reached the altar and moved to the side to allow the bridesmaids to move too, my eyes still making a point of staying on Haley as she continued to walk to us. After a moment, she reached the front and turned to Harrison, tears already pricking my eyes at the fact that I was about to watch my best friend marry the love of her life. All I wanted in the world was to have that same experience, what hurt was not knowing if I ever would. But then I noticed him. My gaze drifted to Tom, his eyes already glued to me as the ceremony started. I had to admit that every time our eyes seemed to lock, I already felt the spark that was apparently there. There would always be a little twinkle in his eyes, one that wasn't there when he was looking at Haley, or talking to Harrison. It seemed to only be there for me. But I was also very aware of the fact that I didn't want to be hasty in falling for a guy who I'd known for all of an hour. Just because he was attractive, just because he was famous and was Harrison's best friend, didn't mean that I loved him, or that I even liked him. Whilst I knew that I wasn't being as shallow as to be interested for the sake of his fame, I didn't want to get too deep and then get my hopes up when I never saw him again after today. I snapped back out of my thoughts, my heart fluttering slightly as despite me having been daydreaming for what must have been at least a few seconds, Tom was still staring at me gently.
"What?" I mouthed at him. He shook his head and bit his lip.
"Nothing. You just look beautiful." He mouthed back. I looked down in a weak attempt to hide my smile, making Tom's lips also curl up as I stuck my tongue into my cheek. I quietly cleared my throat, the view of Tom still admiring me visible out of my peripheral vision as I looked back at Haley, and started to actually listen to the wedding. Though it was fair to say that for the rest of the ceremony, my thoughts were on the looks that Tom and I had been exchanging, and the hope that maybe, just maybe, they meant more than what I was letting myself believe.
I walked into the reception of Harrison and Haley's reception and looked around, my mind slightly blown away by the beauty that they'd managed to achieve as I headed to the bar. I greeted people and gave them small smiles as they also waited for drinks, my mind hoping that the introduction of flowing alcohol would dim the awkwardness of having to interact with Haley's distant family, and talk to people from school who we hadn't seen since having left. I gave the bartender a small smile as he walked over to me.
"Glass of champagne, please." I ordered.
"Make that two." I playfully rolled my eyes and smirked to myself, my tongue once again ending up in my cheek as Tom appeared next to me. I bit my lip and looked at him, the boy giving me a warm smile as he stuck his hands in his trouser pockets. I couldn't seem to get away from him, though the jury was still out on if I hated that as much as I told myself that I did.
"Fancy seeing you here." I joked.
"I know. What are the chances that we keep bumping into each other?" he teased right back. I chuckled and shook my head as I took the champagne and started to turn away from the bar.
"Hey, wait with me." Tom chuckled, my eyes widening and my heart exploding into butterflies as he gently caught my hand before I could walk away. I gulped and turned back to him.
"Why? There's no point, we're on opposite ends of the bridal party table." I scoffed and shook my head. Tom's eyebrows furrowed, his lips forming into a confused 'O' shape as he looked at me.
"Sweetheart, have you seen the place labels? Haley has us right next to each other, on her side." He nodded. My eyes widened, my mouth falling open at his words.
"Of course she fucking does." I scoffed as I looked at my best friend, who was already sitting down. She had known exactly what she was doing when she put Tom next to me, instead of next to Harrison like the best man would normally be.
"I'm hurt, darling, I didn't think that you'd be that keen to get away from me." He teased, making me chuckle and playfully roll my eyes as he finally got his champagne, and we started to walk back to the table.
"Something like that, anyway." I returned with a nonchalant shrug. He smiled and bit his lip as we got back to the table, and Tom immediately pulled my chair out for me. I thanked him with a small smile, my mind trying to ignore how gentlemanly he was as I sat down, and he sat down next to me. Haley bit her lip and leant in to me.
"You're welcome-."
"Shut up." I mumbled, making her smirk and wink at me as she sat back up properly.
"Okay, time for speeches, starting with yours truly." Tom smiled as he stood up with his hand gently grasping his glass of champagne. I looked up at him and bit my lip as the room went quiet, and everyone eagerly waited for what he was going to say.
"So, for those who don't know me, I'm Harrison's best mate, and I've been his partner in crime for twenty years. Well, I was his partner in crime, until he met his wonderful wife, Haley." He spoke, making Haley smile and bite her lip as we looked at each other.
"When they first met, all I heard from Harrison was how utterly amazing this new girl in his life was, and how he had known immediately that she was the one. I just thought 'yeah, whatever, man, that's what you always say'. But then I met Haley, and I realised that everything that he had said about her was right." He nodded, all of us intently looking up at him as he smiled at Harrison and Haley.
"So, as things got more serious, I started to see just how in love with each other they were. And, me being the selfish person that I am, all I could think about was finding the same love that they had found, and getting myself a relationship like they had. Their relationship is what I was raised to want, their love and care for each other is what I hope to have until the day that I die. I haven't found it yet, unfortunately, but like Harrison and Haley did, I hope that I find it soon." Tom spoke as his eyes briefly flicked down to me. I looked down, my eyes wavering as I did, and my cheeks blushing harshly as his words, and that look, raced through my head. The fact that he had looked at me just seconds after saying that he wanted to find the love that they had, and then had looked at me when he was saying that he'd find it soon. They were all clear signals, and I was starting to let myself see that. I was starting to let myself give in.
"So, yeah. I wish you two the very best of luck in your life together, and if I found someone who loves me half as much as you two love each other, I would die a happy man. Congrats, guys, I love you both so much." He smiled and raised his glass. All of us raised our glasses too before sipping our drinks, the fizzy and bitter taste of the champagne flowing down my throat as everyone clapped, and Tom sat back down. I looked at him before leaning in, making him return my glance and subtly look at my lips as he did.
"That was beautiful." I whispered in his ear.
"Thanks." He smiled gently at me, making me return it and bite my lip as I sat back up, and we both started to eat our food.
I stood at the lift, my fingers tapping impatiently against the backs of my hands as I waited for the doors to open. I looked to my side as I heard footsteps, the sounds belonging to my current favourite person. Of course.
"Hey, darling." Tom smiled as he got to me, and turned so that he was also facing the lift doors.
"Hey." I returned.
"Beautiful wedding, don't you think?" he asked as the doors opened.
"It was." I nodded as we walked in and the doors shut. The lift started to move, a comfortable silence filling the space again as we just stood there. Well, truthfully, I wasn't sure if it was comfortable silence, or sexual-tension fuelled silence. Though I had a feeling that I was about to find out. Tom looked at me.
"I know that this is very forward, love, but would you like to come back to my room with me?" he asked. I looked at him.
"To do what?" I asked.
"To play cards, what do you think?" he chuckled and shook his head. I returned it and bit my lip. I had to give it to him, he was funny enough without his looks and personality for me to like him, he just couldn't know that.
"I'm sorry for being so blunt, darling, it's just that the night of the rehearsal dinner was amazing. And...well, I really like you." He admitted, his eyes glued to me as they travelled over my face. I bit my lip and returned the look, every ounce of self-restraint that I possessed being the only thing that was stopping me from just pouncing on the boy. But of course, I could still do that in a socially acceptable way. All I had to do was accept his preposition.
"Okay. I'll go back to your room." I nodded. He smiled and returned it as the doors opened, and we walked out. Tom gently took my hand and intertwined our fingers, both of us giving the other person kind and small smiles as we headed along to his room. He opened the door, making my heart start to pound in anticipation of what was about to happen. We both knew where this was going, I just couldn't believe the fact that I was now going to have bagged him twice. We walked in, Tom shutting the door behind him before he turned to face me. He gave me a small smile, me returning it and biting my lip as I decided not to waste any time this time around. I took his face before gently kissing him, Tom returning it as our eyes fluttered shut and his hands raised to hold my waist. He deepened the kiss, making me smirk against his lips as our tongues started to fight for dominance in the kiss. I decided to take control as I pushed him down onto the bed and straddled him before joining our lips again. He smirked into it, making me smile and playfully tug on his lip as he lay back so that I was on top of him, his hands holding my thighs and pushing the skirt of my dress up my legs as they did.
"Wait." He mumbled as he broke the kiss and looked up at me.
"What's up?" I asked as my eyebrows furrowed. He sighed and looked at me.
"Just, just tell me at any point if you want to stop, or anything, okay?" he double-checked as he looked at me with worried eyes. I bit my lip, my heart warming up slightly at the boy's concern. It was nice to know that he already cared about me enough to want to make sure that I was comfortable.
"Don't worry, Tommy. I wouldn't be in here if I didn't want this." I reassured. He smiled slightly and nodded before leaning up and kissing me again, making me return it before I broke the kiss and moved my lips down to his neck.
