Chapter Thirty-two - Saying goodbye to Tom
~Three months later~
My eyes fluttered open, every inch of my body aching and stiff as I slowly came to. I groaned and squeezed my eyes shut, the stiffness due to the fact that I had fallen asleep in the hospital chair outside of Tom's hospital room, with Olivia still asleep on my lap. I gulped and looked into my husband's room, my heart sinking like it always did when I saw that he still wasn't awake. Of course the logical side of me knew that that wasn't going to happen, but my mind still refused to process that. It had now been three months since Tom had gotten into the accident and slipped into a coma, and the outcome of this situation only looked worse by the day. Tom's parents and brothers had come and said goodbye to him a few days ago, all of us starting to accept the heartbreaking truth that it was better for Tom to unplug the life support. He wouldn't have wanted to live like this, his mind gone and his body being forced to continue living with countless tubes and wires connecting him to machines. All of us knew that he wouldn't want to stay like this, but that didn't make it any easier to say goodbye. I looked up and gave Harrison a half-arsed and tired smile as he came down the corridor towards us.
"Y/N, we need to talk." He mumbled. My eyebrows furrowed.
"About Tom?" I asked quietly. He nodded as he sat down next to me.
"I just talked to the doctor." He spoke and looked at me. My eyes wavered, making Harrison sigh and nod.
"Yeah. They're turning off his life support today." He admitted quietly. I bit my lip and shook my head, tears already leaving my eyes and slipping down my face at his words.
"Harrison, no, I'm not ready." I choked.
"I know, none of us are, but it's been three months. Even if he does wake up, he'll be brain-dead. He won't know who you are, he won't know who Olivia is. He'll have no quality of life. This is the kindest thing for him." He nodded. I returned it and bit my lip, my mind knowing that Harrison was right, but my heart refusing to accept the fact that I was about to lose the love of my life.
"I know, I just don't want him to go. He's never going to meet his second child, he can't go before that, surely." I cried and shook my head. He nodded, tears also leaving his eyes as he rested his hand on my knee in an attempt to soothe me.
"I know, Y/N. I know." He mumbled. I stared ahead, everything in me feeling so fucking numb as I tried to get my thoughts in order enough so that I could actually process what I was thinking.
"I want to say goodbye to him." I mumbled. Harrison flicked his eyes up to look at me.
"Y/N, I'm not sure that that's a good idea-."
"Harrison, he is my life. He's been my husband for five years, five years that should have stretched out to fifty, but we've been robbed of that. We have a daughter, plus a son on the way. I need to say goodbye to him, not to mention that he's never going to meet his son, he needs to meet his son in some way." I cried and shook my head, my brain pounding against my skull as a result of how much I'd cried. He sighed and nodded, tears also leaving his eyes as he gave me a small smile.
"Okay. Do you want to take Olivia in?" he asked.
"I have to let her say goodbye." I choked. Harrison nodded as he stood up, me following suit as complete silence crept over us. I picked Olivia up as I stood, our daughter's eyes fluttering open as I carried her into Tom's room. More tears left my eyes as I saw him just lying there, completely lifeless apart from the almost unnoticeable rise and fall of his chest. He was nothing more than a shell now, the man lying in this bed the polar opposite to the man that I had fallen in love with, what should have been fifty years ago, but had been drastically reduced to five because of fucking cruel twists of life. I sat in the chair next to his bed with Olivia on my lap, my hand stroking through her hair as I looked down at her.
"Sweetheart, you need to say goodbye to daddy, okay?" I gave her a small smile as I desperately tried to keep it together for the sake of our daughter. She looked up at me.
"Why, mummy? Is he not coming home?" She asked quietly. I bit my lip so harshly that I almost broke the skin, my heart breaking even fucking more at our daughter's innocence, and how unaware she was of the situation. Of the fact that her dad was about to die.
"Not for a while, no, my love. But we'll see him again soon. He won't be gone for long, I promise." I nodded. She returned it, my lips taking deep breaths as she climbed onto the bed. She leant down and wrapped her arms around Tom's neck, tears silently streaming down my face at the sight as Olivia hugged him tightly.
"Goodbye, daddy. I love you." She spoke quietly, our daughter kissing his cheek before climbing back onto my lap.
"Did he hear that?" she asked quietly as she looked up at me.
"Every word, sweetheart." I nodded and gave her a small smile before looking up at Harrison.
"Harrison, could you take her while I say goodbye?" I asked.
"Sure." He replied before picking Olivia up.
"Okay, sweetie, mummy is going to have a little talk with daddy, and we're going to wait outside." He smiled at her as he carried her back out, and gently shut the door behind us. I made a weak attempt to bite back even more tears, though it didn't work in the slightest as I looked at Tom. I had to admit that even with all of the machines connected to my husband, he looked so peaceful, he looked okay. I reached my hand up and brushed his hazel curls out of his eyes, my heart aching more than it ever had before at the fact that this would be the last time that I'd ever be able to do that to him. I looked down as tears continued to run down my face.
"So, erm...they're turning off your life support today, Tommy. I honestly don't know what to say, but I'm going to try." I started, my voice already trembling as I looked back up at him and took his hand. I gently intertwined our fingers, my mind begging him to just open his eyes and come back to me, but also knowing that that wasn't going to happen as I flicked my eyes over his face.
"This is it, Tommy, and I don't know what to do. You're never going to meet your son. You're never going to see Olivia grow up. You'll never threaten her first boyfriend to make sure that he takes care of her, you'll never walk her down the aisle." I choked, more tears leaving my eyes as I shook my head.
"I can't thank you enough for the life that you've given me. Less than ten years ago, I thought that I was unlovable. I was going to be thirty in a few years, I didn't have a boyfriend but had a long string of shitty ex-boyfriends, the last one had been a disaster too, and had made me think that I was impossible to love. And then you came along. You loved every part of me, even the bits that I couldn't stand. You loved me through everything, and I can't thank you enough for that. You've given me a beautiful daughter, and you've given me the hope of a beautiful son, too. Don't worry, I'll tell him every day how brilliant his dad was, how amazing he was." I promised and shook my head as I looked at him. I couldn't help but smile slightly, my eyes flicking up to look at his face again as tears dropped onto the sheets of his bed.
"I'd give anything to see those stunning chocolate eyes, just one last time. I'd give anything to see the eyes that I fell in love with. If I had known that that morning would be the last time that I'd ever stare into them, I'd never have stopped staring. I would have insisted that we lay in bed all day, with Olivia in between us, just looking into those gorgeous eyes." I cried and shook my head. Suddenly, I heard the door open behind me, making me look at it. My eyes wavered, a quiet choke leaving my lips as Harrison stood there.
"They're turning him off now." He admitted quietly. I nodded and bit my lip, my entire body feeling so fucking numb as I looked back at Tom. Looked back at the love of my life. Just one last time.
"I love you so much, Tommy, and I always will. Never forget that. I'll see you soon, my love." I nodded before leaning up and gently pressing my lips against his. Another tear left my eye as I knew that it was the last time that I would ever kiss him, the last time that I would feel his gorgeous and thin lips that had been made to be kissed by me. I wasn't ready for him to go, I doubted that I ever would be, but that was something that I would have to learn to live with. I cupped his cheek with my hand, just relishing the feeling of his skin under my own and relishing the feeling of his soft lips against mine as I desperately tried to remember what he felt like. I pulled away and looked at him, my eyes flicking over his face, and my fingers running gently through his soft curls as the nurse walked in, and started to unplug the machines that had kept Tom with us for the last three months. Though, all of us knew that in truth, Tom had died that day. I bit my lip, the stream of tears and the numbness in my heart never stopping as I looked down at him, one last time.
"Goodbye, Tom." I whispered before the heart monitor flatlined.
~Three months later~
I sat in the hospital bed, my eyes glued to mine and Tom's baby boy as I cradled him in my arms. I looked down at him, tears pooling in my eyes as he had Tom's gorgeous chocolate eyes, and was looking straight at me with them. It had been three months since Tom had died, and I wouldn't lie, things had been tough. I had suddenly found myself not only a widow, but a widow with a small child, and another one on the way. I had had to adapt quickly to our situation, but I had survived. Haley, Harrison, my family and Tom's family had all been amazing in helping with everything, all of them making sure that I was never alone through this. And for that, I would always be grateful.
"Hello, mama bird!" I looked up as Harrison and Haley walked in with Olivia and Melissa.
"Hey, guys." I smiled.
"Mummy!" Olivia squealed as she ran towards my bed and frantically climbed up onto it.
"Hello, my darling! You want to meet your little brother?" I smiled and bit my lip as I looked at her. She nodded, my daughter's eyes that were also given to her by Tom glued to her baby brother already.
"He's cute. He has daddy's eyes." She spoke. I nodded and looked down at him too as I bit back even more tears.
"He does, doesn't he? Both of you do." I smiled as she climbed down.
"Let's see the little guy, then." Harrison chuckled, making me smile at him as he leant down, and I carefully placed our baby into his arms.
"Wow, she's right. Those are Tom's eyes." He nodded, Harrison clearing his throat and blinking as he tried to keep his voice steady. I sighed and rested my hand on his arm, making him nod again and give me a small smile in reassurance.
"How are you feeling?" Haley asked as she gently took my hand.
"Exhausted." I chuckled and shook my head.
"I'm not surprised, babe, you were in labour for twenty hours." She returned the head shake, making my eyes widen.
"Only twenty?! Felt like so much longer." I scoffed, making them laugh as Harrison handed our baby back to me.
"So, what's the little guy called?" Haley asked. I thought for a moment, my gaze looking down at those hazel brown curls that were already there, and those perfect chocolate eyes that already made him look exactly like his dad. And so, I knew exactly what I wanted to call him.
"I have the perfect name for him." I nodded.
"Which is?" Harrison asked. I smiled slightly, my eyes remaining glued to his perfect little face as I looked at him.
"Tom."
