Chapter Thirty - Accidental pregnancy
~Three months later~
Tom and I sat at the table, Olivia in her baby chair next to Tom as we ate. Well, Tom and Olivia ate. I stared down at my plate of food, more waves of nausea filling me the longer that I looked at it.
"Sweetheart, you okay?" I looked at Tom, my lips forcing a small smile onto them as my husband looked at me worryingly.
"Yeah, I just feel a bit sick." I nodded.
"Oh. Is it the food?" he asked.
"No, no, I don't think so, there's this bug going around work, it'll pass." I smiled and nodded, making Tom return it. In reality, I knew exactly what was making me sick. And it wasn't the food. More, it was the fact that Tom and I had accidentally had unprotected sex the night of Haley's birthday party. If I was honest, I had no idea why Tom had thought that I had been on birth control, but the fact was that I hadn't been. And now, I suspected that I was now pregnant with our second child. The problem was that I had no idea how he'd react to that news.
"I'll be back in a minute." I nodded as I stood up, kissing Olivia's head as I passed. But as soon as I was out of the sight of my husband and daughter, my pace sped up. I rushed along to the bathroom and opened the toilet lid before vomiting into the bowl. I squeezed my eyes shut as I threw up, dread filling me as I knew exactly what was causing it. Right now, I wished that it was caused by food poisoning. I sighed as I stood up and washed my face, tears already pricking my eyes at the thought of our situation as I took my phone out of my pocket. I scrolled along to Haley's number and clicked on it before sitting against the bathtub.
"Hey, babe." Haley picked up after a second.
"I'm in trouble, Hale." I gulped and shook my head.
"What? Why? What's up?" she asked. I took a deep breath and looked up, my lip in between my teeth as I tried, and failed, to hold it together.
"I think that I'm pregnant." I choked.
"Aww, honey, that's brilliant! Congrats!" she squealed over the phone.
"No, Haley, it's not." I scoffed and shook my head.
"Why not?" she asked. I sighed and bit my lip harshly, my heart flipping in my chest purely at the idea of telling Tom.
"After Olivia was born, Tom admitted that he didn't want to have another baby. Ever. So, we decided that Olivia would be the only child that we would ever have." I explained, my heart in my throat as I tried not to sound as upset as I was. I heard Haley sigh.
"Oh. Now, I see the issue, hun." She spoke.
"What the fuck am I going to do, Haley?" I cried and shook my head.
"Well, the first thing is, have you taken a pregnancy test?" she asked.
"No, but it's been three months since your party, and Tom was wrong. I wasn't on birth control." I choked.
"Okay, well, I suggest that you take a test, and then see what it says. You never know, it may be genuine food poisoning or something." She replied in a clear attempt to reassure me.
"Actually, I'm going to go to the doctors, because Tom found the pregnancy test that I took to confirm that I was going to have Olivia, and I don't want that to happen again. Will you come with me?" I asked.
"Oh, of course I will, hun." She spoke.
"Thanks." I sighed and shook my head, tears still leaving my eyes as I desperately tried to figure out how the fuck we had ended up in this situation.
"Darling? You okay?" Tom's muffled voice sounded through the door, making my heart jump and my eyes widen.
"Hale, I've got to go. I'll call you later." I spoke before hanging up. I took a deep breath, everything in me forcing myself to stay calm and composed as I opened the door. Tom stood there, my husband's eyebrows furrowing in concern as he looked at me.
"You okay, my love?" he asked as he curled his arms around my waist.
"Yeah, I was just calling Haley. This bug is going around her place, too." I lied with a sigh. He nodded and gave me a sympathetic smile as his hands soothingly massaged my waist.
"Okay, my love. How about you get into bed, get some sleep, and I'll put Olivia to bed." He offered.
"Would you?" I asked hopefully.
"Of course. Get some sleep, sweetheart." He smiled gently, making me return it as he leant down and kissed me. He broke the kiss, my lips giving him one more smile as he left the room. As soon as he disappeared, my smile disappeared, my eyes wavering and my anxiety spiking as I sighed.
"How am I going to tell him?" I choked and shook my head, my heart already thumping harshly at the idea of having to tell Tom that I was pregnant, with a child that we had agreed not to have.
I sat in the doctors with Haley, both of us waiting for the doctor to come in as we sat there. Haley looked at me.
"So, what happens if you are pregnant?" she asked. I sighed and shook my head as I returned the gaze.
"I don't even know, Haley. I mean, Tom loves me, of course he does, but if he doesn't want another baby, he doesn't want another baby. Me suddenly turning up pregnant isn't going to change that." I choked, tears pricking my eyes as my heart continued to race at the situation.
"You never know, babe. He may surprise you." She shrugged.
"God, I hope so." I sighed as the door opened, and the doctor walked in.
"Good morning, Mrs. Holland, how are we doing this morning?" She smiled as she sat down on the other side of the desk.
"Morning. I, um...I'm surviving" I gulped and nodded. Her eyebrows furrowed as she looked at Haley.
"I don't mean to be presumptuous, but where's your husband?" she asked. My eyes widened slightly.
"He, erm...he couldn't make it." I nodded. She returned it and gave me a small smile.
"So, you're here for the results of a pregnancy test, correct?" she asked.
"Yeah." I nodded.
"Well, we have the results, as promised." The doctor replied. I gulped as I reached my hand out, prompting Haley to take it.
"Congratulations, Mrs. Holland. You're pregnant." She smiled. My eyes widened, a choke leaving my lips as my stomach dropped. If this had been a planned pregnancy, or if it had been one that Tom and I had agreed on, of course I would have been over the moon. But this being an unplanned pregnancy, one that Tom didn't want too, was enough for me to feel sick over it.
"I'll leave you to process this news. Once again, congratulations." She smiled before standing up and leaving the room. Tears started to leave my eyes, my mouth hanging open in pure shock as I looked at Haley. Her face dropped as she saw how upset I was.
"Oh, Y/N." she sighed, making me choke as she hugged me tightly.
"What am I going to tell Tom? How am I going to tell him that we're having another baby, when he didn't want another baby?" I cried and shook my head.
"Tell him the truth, babe. He loves you, and he loves Olivia, he's going to love this baby just as much." She reassured. I choked and nodded, trying my best to let my mind believe what she was saying as I hugged her again.
My eyes fluttered open, my lips parting into a yawn as my body came out of sleep. I stretched out, my eyes squeezing shut as I did. I rolled over and looked at the time, the numbers eight-thirty a.m. blinking back at me. I groaned and rolled over, my heart sinking further as Tom's side of the bed was empty. Meaning that I had to get up if I wanted to hug my husband. I sat up and climbed out of bed, my eyes seemingly still half closed as I slumped out of the bedroom. I walked out into the apartment, my lips curling into a small smile as I saw Tom sitting on the sofa.
"Morning." I yawned, alerting him to my presence and making him look up at me as I sat next to him.
"Morning, sweetheart." He smiled as he curled his arm around my waist.
"Is Olivia up yet?" I asked as I looked at him.
"Do you think that I'd be sitting here, relaxing, if she was?" he chuckled teasingly. I playfully rolled my eyes and returned his chuckle.
"True." I smiled, though it dipped as the anxiety started to creep in. I gulped and looked down, my heart speeding up more by the second as I fiddled with my fingers.
"You okay, darling?" Tom asked. I gulped again, everything in me trying to stop the tears from leaving my eyes as I looked at him.
"I have something to tell you." I mumbled.
"Who is he?" he chuckled, my husband joking as he looked at me. I smiled and playfully rolled my eyes at him.
"No, don't worry, I'm not cheating." I teased in return.
"Okay, in all seriousness, what's up, love?" he asked. I sighed and looked at him. My mind was screaming at me not to tell him, but I knew that I had to. After all, he was my baby's father.
"I know that we decided that we were only going to have Olivia, but...I'm pregnant." I admitted. Tom's eyes widened, his Adam's apple bobbing in a gulp as he looked at me.
"What?" he scoffed.
"I'm so sorry, Tommy, I know that you wanted to stop at Olivia, but I wasn't taking birth control when we went to Harrison and Haley's party like you thought that I was, and we were getting so into it that I forgot to tell you, and-."
"Woah, woah, my love, slow down." He chuckled, my husband gently taking my hands as he turned to face me. I looked at him through glassy eyes, my heart racing so fast that I was afraid that it would burst right out of my chest as I looked at him.
"First of all, why are you sorry?" he asked softly as he raised his thumb to gently wipe away the tears that had fallen.
"Because we decided that we were only going to have Olivia, and because I was fucking stupid, we're going to have another baby, who's an accident." I cried and shook my head. Tom sighed and gave me a small smile, a slight heartbreak creeping over my husband's eyes as he looked at me.
"Yeah, we decided that we were only going to have her, but it's okay. You're pregnant now, and I couldn't be happier." He smiled. My eyebrows furrowed, my heart jumping in my chest at his words.
"What?" I asked quietly.
"Look, she's only two. It's not like we're starting again when she's ten, darling. It's okay, and I can't wait to meet our new son or daughter." He smiled and nodded. I choked and shook my head, my lips automatically smiling at my husband's admittedly unexpected answer.
"I love you so much." I choked.
"I love you too, sweetheart, and I love our unborn baby." He smiled before leaning in and kissing me. I returned it, my eyes fluttering shut and my hand raising to cup his cheek as his hand cupped my stomach.
"Mummy, daddy!" We broke the kiss, my heart warming at the sight of our daughter as Olivia toddled in.
"Morning, my darling." Tom smiled as he stood up. Olivia squealed as he picked her up and kissed her on the cheek before sitting back down with her on his lap.
"Morning, sweetheart." I smiled at her, our daughter giggling and sticking her fist in her mouth as she looked at us.
"Love, mummy and daddy have something to tell you." Tom nodded.
"Okay." She nodded. Tom looked at me, making me gulp and nod before he looked back at Olivia.
"You're going to get a little brother, or a little sister in nine months' time." He spoke, our eyes both on her as he ran his fingers gently through Olivia's hazel hair.
"What?" Olivia asked innocently.
"You tell her, Tommy." I reassured. He nodded and gave me a small smile as he looked at our daughter.
"Mummy is pregnant. That means that she has a baby in her tummy." Tom spoke, my husband smiling at our daughter as Olivia's eyes widened slightly.
"Wow." She smiled, making me return it and bite my lip as she looked down at my stomach. I couldn't help but let tears prick my eyes at the situation. In truth, I didn't know how to feel. It had just been me, Tom and Olivia for the last two years, but at the same time, I was overjoyed that we were having another baby, one that was wanted by Tom, too. It was admittedly a lot of change to comprehend, but it was all change that I was ready for.
"How did it get there?" she asked as she looked up at Tom. His eyes widened, making me try to stifle a laugh as his mouth fell open.
"Yeah, Tommy, how did it get there?" I chuckled. He gulped and looked at his daughter.
"Erm...er...um...how about daddy makes some pancakes?" he smiled.
"Yay!" she squealed, the toddler scrambling off of Tom's lap and running into the kitchen as Tom breathed a sigh of relief.
"You're lucky that your daughter loves pancakes." I chuckled as I stood up, Tom following suit as he looked at me. He bit his lip, his gaze flicking over my face as he curled his arms around my waist too.
"You know, I know that we weren't planning to have another baby, but I can't wait." He smiled and shook his head.
"Trust me, Tommy. Neither can I." I replied, making his smile widen as I leant up and kissed him.
