Chapter Ten - Dinner, and a blessing
Y/N's P.O.V
I applied my last coat of lipstick, my look finally complete as I looked at myself in the mirror. Tonight, Tom was meeting my parents for the first time over dinner, and I knew that my poor boyfriend was absolutely shitting himself. Whilst I had no doubt that they'd love him, Tom definitely did, and so he'd been incredibly nervous all day.
"Not bad." I nodded to myself as I admired my final look.
"Darling." I turned around as Tom walked in, the boy holding up two ties with his dress shirt unbuttoned.
"Which one?" he gulped.
"You don't need to wear a tie, babe, we're staying here for dinner." I chuckled and shook my head as I walked to him, and tucked his shirt into his trousers.
"Yeah, but I'm meeting your parents, I need to make a good impression." He mumbled as he looked down.
"You're going to be fine. Just be yourself, and you'll win them over." I nodded as I leant up and started to gently kiss his neck.
"Oh no, no, sweetheart, they're coming in fifteen minutes, don't you dare get me started before they get here." He chuckled and shook his head.
"It's not my fault that you look so fucking good in your suit." I teased, making him smirk and shake his head as I pulled away and started to button up his shirt. I bit my lip and rested my hands on his chest as I finished, Tom flicking his gaze over my face as he curled his arms around my waist.
"You're going to be brilliant, Tommy. I'm sure of it." I nodded in reassurance.
"Thank you, love." He gave me a small smile, making me return it as he leant in and kissed me.
Tom and I sat at our dinner table with my parents, all four of us laughing, talking, and eating as we enjoyed the night. I wasn't sure what Tom had been worried about, he had turned on his usual charm the second that my parents had arrived, and been making them laugh ever since. If they ended the night thinking that he wasn't good enough for me, then I doubted that they'd think that anyone on the planet was good enough for me.
"So, kids, how long have you been together now?" mum asked as she looked between us.
"An amazing year and a half now." Tom nodded and looked at me, making me smile and bite my lip at him as he rested his hand on my thigh under the table.
"And how did you meet?" dad asked. My eyes widened, as did Tom's as we looked at each other. We talked with our eyes, our pupils widening and squinting as we silently decided not to tell my parents behind the truth of us meeting. After all, they didn't need to know that we'd had sex within an hour of knowing each other, and then had had sex again before Tom had even asked me out. Nah. They didn't need to know that. Tom didn't need to die tonight.
"U-um...Haley introduced us at her rehearsal dinner." He nodded and looked at me, making my eyes widen slightly as I nodded and agreed with the story.
"Yes, she did. She thought that we'd be good for each other, and she was right." I chuckled.
"Quite." Mum smiled. Tom and I returned it as he raised his glass of wine to his lips.
"So, Tom, what are your intentions with my daughter?" dad asked. My eyes widened, as did Tom's as he choked on his wine.
"Dad!" I hissed, Tom grabbing his napkin and hurrying to wipe the spilled wine off of his face and tie as I put my hand on his arm in reassurance.
"E-erm...I don't, I don't know how to answer that." Tom gulped and shook his head.
"Just say the first thing that comes to mind." my dad shrugged.
"Dad, this is hardly appropriate." I scoffed.
"I'm only asking him a question, what's the issue with that?" he asked and looked at Tom. I sighed and looked at my boyfriend too.
"My intentions? My intentions are to love and care for your daughter until the day that I die. To stick with her no matter what, and to always be there for her." He nodded. My face softened, tears pricking my eyes and my heart fluttering at his insanely kind words as I put my hand on his knee.
"Oh, Tommy." I gave him a small smile as I tried not to cry. He returned it, his gaze flicking between my eyes and my lips, and his hand landing on mine as he looked at my dad. Dad nodded.
"Well, I'm certainly happy with that answer. Well done, I know that I put you on the spot." He chuckled.
"No shit, dad." I scoffed, making Tom chuckle and shake his head as his hand gently let go of mine, and landed on my thigh again.
Tom's P.O.V
Tom walked into the kitchen where Y/N's dad was washing the dishes, the boy's heart racing so harshly in his chest that he could hear his blood also rushing through his body in his ears. He fiddled with his hands, his heart in his throat nearly suffocating him as he walked up to Y/N's dad. Her dad spotted him, and smiled.
"Ah, Tom. Thank you for having us for dinner, it was lovely, and it was wonderful to meet you too." He smiled kindly.
"Thank you, Mr. Y/L/N, it was brilliant to finally meet you and Y/N's mum too." He returned the smile before gulping harshly.
"E-erm, I was wondering if I could talk to you about something." He spoke. Y/N's dad looked at him.
"Course you can. Shoot, kid." He nodded and dried his hands before turning to face him. Tom took a deep breath, the boy feeling sick to his stomach at what he was about to ask. Of course Y/N was her own person, and so Tom would propose to her regardless of whether or not her dad gave him his blessing, but he knew that it would mean a lot to Y/N. And so, realistically, he had to get the blessing.
"I would be honoured if you would give me your blessing to ask your daughter to marry me." He admitted. Y/N's dad's eyes widened, making Tom gulp harshly.
"I'm sorry, I know that Y/N is very much her own person, and that you're not an overly traditional person, but I also know that despite that, it would still mean a lot to her if I had asked for your blessing, and you had given it to me. I just didn't think that it would be right to ask her to marry me without asking for your blessing. I will say that I'll be proposing to her anyway, because like I said, she's her own person, but I've explained why I'm doing this, a-and you get my point." He chuckled nervously, the boy starting to ramble before managing to just about stop himself. Y/N's dad looked at him and nodded, making the nerves start to creep back in for Tom as he gulped harshly.
"Can I just ask you one last thing, Tom? I promise that I'll be done after this." He requested.
"Of course." Tom nodded. Y/N's dad continued to study him. God, what Tom would have given to know exactly what the man was thinking at that moment.
"Do you love her? And I don't just mean the type of love where you say it every few months. I mean, do you really love her?" he asked. Tom smiled slightly as he let his eyes wander. Of course his answer was yes, it was how he immediately knew that was striking him. The fact that as soon as Y/N's dad had asked him that, his thoughts became completely consumed with her. About all of the times that she'd made him laugh, made him feel happy, made him feel loved and safe. There would never be an easier answer again in Tom's life, and he knew that. He bit his lip and looked at her dad.
"She's my world." He nodded, his mind praying slightly that the simple statement was enough as his heart continued to race. The man returned Tom's nod.
"Okay, then. Yes. Yes, I give you my blessing to marry my daughter." He spoke. Tom breathed a sigh of relief, his eyes wavering and his heart finally relaxing as all of the anxiety left him in a second.
"Thank you, sir, thank you so much." He smiled as the men shook hands.
"I just hope that she says yes. It would be an honour to have you as my son-in-law." Her dad nodded.
"Thank you, sir, that means a lot." He returned the smile before turning and leaving the room. As soon as he shut the door, he rested against it and let his eyes flutter shut. He let out a shaky breath and gulped, his mind only just registering how fast his heart was beating. Not that he was surprised, he had just gotten everything that he wanted. He had gotten the go-ahead to marry Y/N. He was going to marry the girl who was his whole world. He breathed a sigh of relief, his heart never more full of happiness than it was in this moment as he smiled to himself.
"I get to marry the love of my life." he whispered, the smile unable to be controlled as he headed back through to where Y/N and her mum were sitting.
