Chapter One - The boy on the balcony

I stood on the balcony of the hotel, my cigarette in between my red lips as I stared out over the vast gardens of the hotel. I took the cigarette out and blew the smoke out into the black sky. I sighed out, looking out at the beautiful trees and fields that were linked to the hotel. I wasn't anyone special, I was just a twenty-five-year-old woman who was here for my best friend's wedding to her dream guy. I was Haley's maid of honour, and I couldn't wait to help her marry the love of her life, Harrison. The only thing was that I saw the love that was between them, and all I wanted was to experience that myself. But all I had instead was a string of failed relationships, a string of guys who hadn't loved me or appreciated me like Harrison loved Haley. Of course I was so happy for my best friend and her soon-to-be husband, but I wanted to find that too. That was all that I wanted, and today at their rehearsal dinner was potentially the first chance that I'd get to find someone. That was what I hoped, anyway.

"Do you have a lighter?" I snapped out of my thoughts as a voice called out behind me. I turned around and my eyes widened at what I saw. The most stunning guy stood there, his gorgeous hazel curls falling slightly over the eyes that I knew were a beautiful chocolate, despite the fact that it was too dark to see them. And I knew what colour this stranger's eyes were...because this stranger was Tom Holland. Because that was something else about my best friend. Haley was marrying Harrison, Tom Holland's best friend. Despite having met Harrison a few times, I had never met his famous best mate, mainly because he travelled a lot. But I had to admit that Tom had always been my celebrity crush. The gorgeous and charming Londoner had a smile that warmed my heart, his laugh like music to my ears whenever I would see him on TV in movies, or watch a video with him in. I wasn't exactly upset about the fact that he'd been the first guy that I'd bumped into at this rehearsal dinner. But I knew that I had to play this cool. And so, that was what I would do. I snapped back again, Tom raising his eyebrow at me as if to silently ask the question again as he stood there with his hands in his black trouser pockets.

"Um, yeah." I nodded. He gave me a small smile as he walked forward and got the carton of cigarettes out of his pocket as he walked. He took a cigarette from the carton and put it in between his thin lips, my eyes staying on him as he appeared next to me. I gave him a small smile and handed him the lighter.

"Thank you." He returned my smile before putting a hand over the cigarette butt and lighting it. He handed back the lighter before standing next to me and looking out into the gardens like I had been doing only seconds before. I gulped and subtly looked at the gorgeous man who was standing next to me. Fuck, he's even more stunning in person, I thought as my eyes raked up and down his figure. His chocolate brown curls were being caught slightly by the wind, making them briefly fall over his eyes that were so gorgeous that I already wanted to drown in them.

"Beautiful night, isn't it?" he asked, the boy continuing looking out as he blew out the smoke.

"Yeah, yeah it is. Beautiful rehearsal dinner too." I nodded. He returned it before looking at me, his eyes flicking over my face as he did.

"So, who are you?" he asked. I looked at him, my mind slightly taken aback by the bluntness of his question.

"What?" I scoffed as I raised my eyebrow.

"Sorry, in terms of the bride and groom. How do you know them?" Tom clarified with a chuckle. I returned it and bit my lip.

"I'm the maid of honour. I'm Haley's best friend." I nodded. He raised his eyebrows and his mouth formed into an 'O' shape.

"Nice." He smiled.

"Yeah. I'm assuming that you're the best man, given that you're Harrison's best friend?" I asked. He looked at me, his lips slightly parting to blow out his cigarette smoke as he moved it from his lips.

"Yeah, I'm his best man. I'm taking from what you know about me already that you know who I am?" He chuckled.

"Of course I do. I don't know if you've noticed, but you're in quite a lot of movies and shit." I nodded sarcastically, making him smile and shake his head as he looked down.

"Fair point, you got me there." He chuckled before looking at me again.

"By the way, do you have a boyfriend? If you don't mind me asking, of course?" he asked. I raised my eyebrow at him, my heart leaping at the seemingly sudden and random quietly. Direct fucker, I hadn't thought that we were at the level of flirting yet. But I was obviously wrong. Not that I minded.

"Why?" I scoffed.

"I'm sorry, I realise that that must have sounded super weird being asked without context. It's just in some weddings, the maid of honour and the best man are a couple, so I just wondered." He shrugged.

"Don't get any ideas." I teased as I stamped out my cigarette with my heel.

"May be hard not to, I have to admit that that dress makes you look stunning." He smiled. I chuckled and shook my head at the fact that the Tom Holland was flirting with me within five minutes of having met me, but of course, I was reciprocating it. After all, each compliment, each look, each flick of his eyes up and down my body was making my heart flutter in my chest. And I had to admit that I loved it already.

"I'll catch you later, Tom." I spoke as I turned and started to head back inside.

"I certainly hope so. Wait, wait." He replied, making me stop in my tracks. I looked over my shoulder at the boy.

"Sorry, I didn't catch your name." He gave me a small smile as he stepped forward and held out his hand. I returned the smile and bit my lip.

"Y/N. Y/N is my name." I nodded as I gently placed my hand into his. His lips curled up even more.

"'Y/N'. Beautiful name for a beautiful girl." He smirked as he leant down and gently kissed my hand before letting it go.

"Shut up." I chuckled and shook my head, my dismissing words to cover the way that my heart was pounding in my chest as I walked back into the hotel.

I walked back into the ballroom of the hotel that was hosting the rehearsal dinner, my heels clicking against the floor as I headed back to the table that I was sitting at with Haley. My best friend looked up at me and gave me a small smile as I sat back down next to her. She looked at me.

"What were you doing out there with Tom?" she smirked at me. I looked at her and rolled my eyes, a chuckle leaving my lips as I could already take a good guess at what Haley was thinking about the fact that I had been out there talking to Harrison's best man.

"Nothing. I went out for a tab, so did he, we were just talking." I shrugged as I tried to downplay it.

"Sure you were." She giggled.

"Shut up, bitch." I smiled, making her laugh and shake her head as she gently nudged my shoulder with hers.

"I'm just saying, he's single, and wants a girlfriend. The rumours in the media that he's ready to settle down are true, and you're ready to settle down too, it's kind of perfect. I could think of a worse match." She shrugged.

"Yeah, but I don't just want to settle with whoever wants me. I want to settle with someone who I love. I want to settle with the one." I sighed. After all, I knew that Tom was famous, I knew that he was my celebrity crush and that he was insanely attractive and kind, but I wasn't about to trick myself into thinking that I was in love with the boy after a mere five minutes of talking to him.

"I get that, but it's Tom fucking Holland, you don't get much better than that. Not to mention that you never know, he may be the one regardless of who he is." She smiled.

"Haley, I was literally talking to the guy for five minutes." I scoffed.

"Plus the years that you've been quietly crushing on him. Pair those two things together and that could easily be enough." She giggled. I sighed and shook my head, my best friend's words almost getting into my head and making me start to big the situation up. Which was exactly what I didn't want to do.

"I mean, I don't know. He's nice enough, and he's certainly not bad looking." I scoffed.

"See? You're thinking about it. You've only known the guy for five minutes, Y/N." she mocked.

"Honey, shut the fuck up!" I laughed, making her return it and shake her head as she sipped her champagne and I stood up.

"I'm getting another drink, I'm too sober to be dealing with you trying to make me chat up a celebrity." I teased.

"A celebrity who happens to be my fiancé's best friend. Don't get too drunk, I know what you're like." Haley chuckled.

"Mhm." I returned, making her playfully roll her eyes at me as I walked away and started to head to the bar.

"Vodka martini, please." I ordered, making the barman nod as he started to make the drink. I sighed and looked around as I waited, my body leaning against the bar as I casually people-watched the other guests that had come tonight, and would be coming to the wedding too. My eyes drifted to where Harrison was, and my eyes widened slightly as he was talking to Tom. Within seconds, Tom's gaze drifted to me as he talked. His lips curled into a smile before he said something to Harrison, making him look at me too. I gulped harshly and turned back to the bar, my heart fluttering violently in my chest at the fact that the pair had clearly been talking about me. The question was what they were talking about. Though, given that Tom had been flirting with me ten minutes ago, I could take an educated guess.

"Thank you." I spoke to the bartender as he slid the martini into my hand. I took a sip of it and winced slightly at the bitter taste. Though I needed the liquid courage, given how much had already happened at this dinner.

"A single malt whiskey, please." I gulped and bit my lip as Tom appeared next to me. I looked at him timidly as I sipped my drink, making him return the look and smile.

"Hey, you." He chuckled.

"What were you talking about with Harrison?" I asked immediately.

"Why? Were your ears burning?" he smiled.

"A little, yeah." I chuckled and nodded.

"I was just telling him how I'd met a really nice girl on the balcony, and how amazing her ass looks in the cocktail dress that she's wearing." He shrugged and nodded. My eyes widened and I scoffed at his bluntness. With any other guy, I would have slapped him immediately for being so outright with his flirting. But there was something different about Tom. Despite Haley's joking and teasing, I already felt a connection with the Londoner. My heart already fluttered every time that he looked at me, I already wanted to talk to him every chance that I got. And so for him, I'd let it slide. Of course I would.

"Wow. You don't hold back, do you?" I teased.

"No, I don't. I never hold back with people that I've just met. It gives them the chance to leave me straight away." He spoke. My eyes widened slightly at his words.

"What?" I scoffed as I looked at him with furrowed eyebrows. He returned the glance, his beautiful eyes continuing to flick between my eyes and my lips as he seemingly admired me.

"The way that I figure it, I may as well be the honest me whenever I meet someone new. If I'm being someone that I'm not, you don't really know me. If I'm being me, the new people that I've met can leave there and then if they don't like me. It means that I don't get hurt later." He shrugged, his eyes wavering slightly as he looked down. I gulped slightly at his reaction, something in his expression and words telling me that his tactic came from previous hurt that he'd been through. And despite having only known him for a matter of minutes, I already felt hurt on his behalf.

"Who would possibly leave, you're Tom fucking Holland." I teased with a scoff in an attempt to lighten the mood. It clearly worked, Tom chuckling and nodding as he looked back up at me.

"True. That's another reason, though. Weeds out the materialistic cunts." He smiled, making me laugh and shake my head as I looked at him.

"But yeah, your logic makes sense. Get rid of the fake bitches." I nodded as I sipped my martini again.

"Exactly. But I can tell that you're a keeper, because you haven't left yet." He smiled.

"Oh, there's still time." I teased, making him laugh and shake his head as he kept his eyes on me. He bit his lip, a smile still on his lips but the laughing having stopped as he seemed to study me.

"I like you, Y/N. I've only just met you, but you already seem like a really nice and genuine person. That's why I'm not joking about already being able to tell that you're a keeper." He admitted with a nod. I smiled and bit my lip as I looked down, my heart fluttering again in my chest at his words. Surely I couldn't be the only one who felt the connection, surely he'd sensed it too. Maybe that was even why he seemed to be making such an effort to talk to me, or talk to Harrison about me. I didn't know, but I had to admit that I was hopeful.

"Thank you. You're not too bad yourself." I teased with a chuckle. He returned the chuckle and nodded, his eyes having continued to flick over my face for our entire conversation, though they'd stayed on my lips a few times. Which was something that I'd definitely noticed.

"I better get back to Haley." I sighed as I picked up my glass.

"Sure, yeah, I should get back to Haz too. Hopefully I'll see you later." He smiled and bit his lip. I returned it.

"Hopefully." I smiled and nodded before walking back to the table.
