Chapter Nine - Meeting the parents
~One year later~
"Yeah, yeah, sure. That sounds brilliant." I nodded, my phone pressed to my ear as I sat in the kitchen.
"Yeah, one-hundred-percent." I smiled at Tom as he walked into the room. My smile widened as he leant down and pecked my cheek before putting the bags of shopping onto the marble island in the centre of the kitchen.
"Okay. See you later. Okay, bye, love you too." I spoke before hanging up.
"Who was that?" Tom asked, my boyfriend popping a crisp into his mouth as he leant against the counter. I bit my lip and looked at him as I already knew that he wouldn't like what I was about to say. But, well...it had to be said.
"My mum." I nodded. He returned it slowly.
"Okay." He spoke nervously as he narrowed his eyes at me.
"You're not going to like why she called." I warned and shook my head.
"Please tell me that someone died." He gulped. I shook my head again and gave him a sheepish smile.
"Her and dad want to meet you." I admitted. His eyes widened.
"Oh, fucking hell, no." he groaned as he lulled his head back. I chuckled as I stood up and went to him. As much as I loved Tom, given his job as a very famous actor, my parents had had had reservations about me dating him from the start, which was only made worse when tabloids had started to shit on me for no other fact apart from me being his girlfriend. Because of this, Tom and I were a year and a half into our relationship...and he still had yet to meet them. But, his luck had just run out.
"Tommy, we knew that it would only be a matter of time before they insisted on meeting you. We've been dating for a year and a half now, my parents want to meet the man that I want to marry." I nodded as I curled my arms lovingly around his waist. He sighed and looked at me as he also wrapped his arm around me to pull me into his body.
"What if they don't like me?" he mumbled.
"Why wouldn't they like you?" I chuckled in a slight attempt to reassure him as I put my hands under his t-shirt and gently rubbed circles on his skin with my thumbs, knowing that that calmed him down.
"Because I had a reputation of being a fuckboy, not to mention that they've probably seen god knows what rumours about me out in the media. They're going to think that I'm not good enough for you." He gulped.
"Of course they won't think that. All they want to see is that you love me, and you show me that every day, so your love will show, it's okay." I reassured. He sighed and looked at me again.
"I don't wanna." He whined before resting his head against my shoulder, making me laugh and shake my head at how cute and adorable Tom acted when he really didn't want to do something. And this definitely fell into that category.
"Aww, Tommy. You'll be fine." I promised as I gently kissed his neck.
"When do they want to come over?" he mumbled into my skin. I sighed and smiled sheepishly, my mind knowing that the situation was about to get ten times worse for the boy. If that was even possible.
"This Saturday." I admitted, making him groan again as he raised his head from my shoulder and curled his arm around my waist.
"Fine, fine. I suppose that we do need to get this over with if we want to get married and stuff in the future." He grumbled.
"That better not be your official proposal to me. Also, do try not to sound quite so upset to have to meet my parents." I teased him with a chuckle.
"I'm sorry, darling. I'm just really worried that they won't like me." He sighed.
"I know, but they'll love you. Even if they don't, it doesn't matter, because I love you." I shrugged, making him look down at me as he gave me a small smile.
"Aw. I love you too." He returned my smile, making me chuckle as he leant down and gently kissed me.
Tom's P.O.V
Tom lay on the sofa with Y/N lying on top of him, his fingers gently combing through her hair like he knew that she liked as they wound down for the weekend and watched a movie.
"Can you pause it, I need to pee." Y/N spoke as she stood up.
"Thanks for sharing, darling." Tom chuckled as he paused the film. Y/N stuck her tongue out at him and laughed, making him return it and bite his lip as she walked around the sofa and down the hallway towards the bathroom. Tom watched her, the boy making sure that the door was shut before he grabbed his phone and clicked on Harrison's number. He bit his lip as he put the phone to his ear.
"Hello?" Harrison answered.
"Hey, man, it's me." Tom spoke.
"Hey, mate, what's up?" he asked.
"I need you to meet me at the corner of West-end street tomorrow, is that okay?" he asked.
"Sure, yeah, but why?" Harrison asked.
"I can't tell you, Y/N is in earshot, and I can't risk her hearing this." Tom mumbled, his eyes flicking to the bathroom door to make sure that Y/N was still in there with the door shut. There was a pause.
"Mate, what's going on?" he scoffed.
"I just need you to trust me, okay?" Tom reiterated. Harrison sighed.
"Alright, yeah. I'll see you tomorrow." He replied.
"Thanks, man. See you then." Tom nodded to himself before hanging up.
"Who was that?" Tom flinched slightly, his heart jumping in his chest as Y/N walked back into the room. He looked up and smiled at her as he tried to act like she hadn't just accidentally scared the shit out of him.
"Nothing, just Harrison asking to meet up tomorrow." He shrugged.
"Okay." Y/N nodded as she lay back on top of him. He rested his hand protectively on her back before running his other hand through her hair again as he unpaused the movie, the boy hoping to god that she wouldn't notice how fast his heart was racing as they continued to relax and cuddle.
Tom stood on the corner of West-end street as he waited for Harrison. He sighed in relief as he saw him walking towards him.
"Hey, mate." Tom smiled.
"Hey. So, where's the girl that you're cheating on Y/N with, then?" Harrison teased. Tom chuckled and rolled his eyes.
"Don't worry, the reason that I asked you to come here is a lot less sinister than you think it is." He reassured.
"Okay. Say it then, why are we here?" Harrison asked. Tom took a deep breath and looked at his best friend.
"I'm meeting Y/N's parents this weekend, and I want to ask her dad for his blessing to marry her." He admitted. Harrison's eyes widened.
"Wow, man. That's big, congrats!" he laughed, making Tom smile as he tightly hugged him.
"Thanks. I asked you here today to help me pick out an engagement ring." He nodded.
"Jesus. Thank you, that means a lot." He smiled.
"Of course, you and Haley are the only people who know Y/N as well as me, and obviously I couldn't trust Haley not to tell her." He teased.
"Yeah, good call, I love her, but she can't keep secrets from Y/N." Harrison chuckled and shook his head.
"Hence why you're here, and not her. Are you ready to go?" Tom asked.
"Yeah. Let's go get your girl the perfect ring." He smiled, Tom returning it and Harrison patting him on the back as they started to walk.
Tom and Harrison walked into the jewellers, and looked around, Tom's eyes widening at the incredible assortment of rings that he could already see. But that was also the problem. Tom hadn't even properly started looking for a ring yet, and he was already feeling beyond overwhelmed.
"Okay, so what do you want?" Harrison asked.
"I don't even know." He sighed and shook his head, the boy now wishing that he'd done at least some research on different types of rings as a shop clerk walked towards them.
"Can I help you?" she smiled.
"Hi, yes, I'm looking for an engagement ring for my girlfriend." Tom nodded.
"Okay. Well, I'll let you have a good look around, and just call me over when you're ready to make a decision, or if you need any help." She smiled before turning to walk away.
"Actually, I could use help now-." The assistant continued walking away, making Tom roll his eyes.
"Never mind, I guess." He sighed as he started to look at the different rings.
"Are you seeing anything that you like, or that Y/N will like?" Harrison asked. Tom sighed and shook his head.
"Nope. She hates jewellery with too much bling, and she also hates things that are too big. All of these rings are either covered in diamonds, or the main diamond is way too big for the ring itself." He scoffed.
"Well, I hate to break it to you, Tom, but most engagement rings are like that." Harrison sighed.
"Which is why I need to find the perfect one." Tom groaned and shook his head as he started to worry that he wouldn't find the right ring for Y/N. He knew that the sentimental value that came with him having given it to her would mean that she would love it anyway, but he wanted her to be able to wear a ring that she loved both for the look of it and the sentimentality, not force her to wear a ring for the rest of her life simply because he bought it for her. He continued to look around as he tried to spot the perfect one. Suddenly, his gaze fell on one ring. His eyes widened as he saw it, his heart jumping in excitement as it was everything that he knew that Y/N loved. He walked towards it, admiring how it looked as he got closer to it. It was a gorgeous ring that was encrusted with small diamonds, though they weren't too flashy or over-the-top as a larger, but still tasteful diamond sat in the centre. It had 'Y/N' written all over it, and Tom knew it.
"Mate, do you see one that you like?" Harrison asked.
"Yeah, come here." Tom spoke as his eyes stayed on the ring. Harrison appeared next to him, and his eyes widened.
"Tom, that ring is perfect. That's Y/N's ring, that's the one." He nodded.
"You think?" Tom asked.
"I know. That's the ring that you should buy her." He nodded. Tom returned it and smiled, his heart jumping in excitement as he found the ring that Y/N would hopefully wear for the rest of her life.
