Part 9
It has been a few days since the incident when Finnigan saw Brielle with another guy. He didn't want to make a big deal because he once said he wouldn't stop her from seeing him. So, it wasn't her fault if she still saw the guy. He went back to normal after his sick leave ended. During that time, he tried not to overthink it and focused on his job. He sometimes didn't come home. Whenever he saw her, he couldn't get the image of her kissing the guy out of his mind.
Michael noticed the change in Finnigan's behavior. He wanted to ask what was bothering his best friend's mind, but he knew Steve would only talk when he wanted to, just like when he first wanted to marry Brielle. Michael knew something must be bothering his best friend about that. Even though Finnigan never talked about his marriage anymore, Michael could tell Finnigan wasn't happy. It was strange because, as a police officer, one usually talked about having a great wife, but Finnigan did not even talk about it once. He would leave whenever people brought it up, saying he had work.
Finnigan went up to the rooftop to get some fresh air. He was struggling with a case he was working on, which seemed to relate to his situation. A woman was killed by her husband because she cheated on him, and now they need to find the husband, who has gone missing. Based on the information they've gathered, the husband is sick and requires immediate treatment at the hospital. Finnigan thought about asking Brielle about the man, as she might know him, but he was worried about facing her. What if he saw her with her boyfriend again? He took a deep breath and reminded himself to stay strong. This is work-related. He sent her a text message informing her that he was coming to the hospital.
While administering care to a patient, Brielle's attention was diverted by the buzz of her phone. Upon reading the message, her expression shifted into a frown as she learned that Finnigan was en route to the hospital. Noticing his recent avoidance of her, she couldn't help but wonder about the gravity of the situation that necessitated their meeting. Responding swiftly with "Okay. Meet me at my office," she pocketed her phone and returned her focus to her patient, her mind occupied with thoughts of the impending conversation.
When Finnigan arrived at the hospital, he hurried to her office, expecting to find her there. However, to his surprise, her office was empty. Suddenly, the sharp sound of a gunshot echoed through the corridors, sending chills down Finnigan's spine. Without a second thought, he sprinted towards the source of the sound, only to be met with a chaotic scene of people fleeing in fear. Fearing the worst, he fumbled to dial Michael's number. "Michael, bring back up to the hospital," he urgently requested, his voice strained with concern. "There might be a hostage situation unfolding." He heard a man yelling inside a room. He went to the room and saw a man holding a gun in one hand and tightly gripping a female doctor with the other hand. Finnigan was holding his gun, ready to shoot if he had a clear shot. The sight of Brielle being held hostage left him in utter shock. "Freeze. Let the doctor go," he exclaimed. Another shock wave hit him as he got a clearer view of the man's face. The man standing before them matched the description of the long-sought suspect. Regrettably, they hadn't had the opportunity to question Brielle about him. Now, they found themselves in an agitated and precarious situation.
The man's heart raced as he caught sight of Finnigan. How could a policeman be in the hospital? "No! I am not letting her go! People have seen my face all over the news as a murderer! I need my treatment. I am sick," he pleaded, tears streaming down his face. The man expressed his concerns, "But people around are starting to look at me like I am gonna kill them," he said with urgency. "Okay, your name is Ben, right? Ben, please listen to me. I know why you did that to your wife. I understand. I do," Finnigan said, and his eyes occasionally darted towards Brielle, who appeared very frightened. "You are hurt and in pain," he said, conveying that he understood why the man took that action. However, he still believed that it was wrong for the man to kill his wife. Finnigan also cautiously approached them, hoping to seize the gun. He also gave Brielle a reassuring glance, silently urging her to remain calm as he devised a plan to extricate her from the predicament. Brielle struggled to maintain her composure amidst the tension.
"You've made a mistake. Please, don't compound it. Let's talk this through, and I'll assist you," he said. Slowly, the man released his grip on Brielle. He was still holding the gun, so the situation wasn't safe yet for them. Brielle ran over to Finnigan and stayed behind him. "Go," Finnigan said to her. "No, I am not leaving you," she said, and Finnigan sighed deeply. "Okay, Ben. Now I need you to hand me the gun," he said to Ben. Ben looked at Finnigan and Brielle. He saw that Brielle didn't want to leave Finnigan, so they must be lovers or life partners. The last thing that was heard from the room was another gunshot.
