VIII. Back to Work

I need to get back on a set schedule for posting.

New term:
(height) = Literally what it says. Height. (This story is mainly based off a 167 cm (~5'7") person but because some readers might be taller or shorter than the set height (I'm about 120 cm (5'3")) I'll give the reader the liberty to determine their size.)
========================================
08:30 sharp. You and Krennic were standing in front of the Raider. Your hand is in a straight line, the tops of your fingers just brushing against your brow. In return for your salute, his eyebrow is raised. "Look at that. You're early today." Early? You glance at your watch. 08:31. Wouldn't he scream at you for being late? He points up to the large clock that hangs off the roof of the giant workshop the Raider was in. 08:25. Was your watch fast? You're about to change it when he stops you. "I'm kidding. You're right on time. That clock is five minutes slow."

You cock your head a little. When had he developed a sense of humor? Oh well. At least it was entertaining. He then turns on a more serious expression and says "You can lower your hand now." You do so. Then he lays down the list of things to do. "The Raider needs to get back into the air today. All officers and troopers will be throwing their backs into the work. You get to be with me in the third engine room. We have to recalibrate the programme to the bridge, check on the stability of the engine, and test it."

You nod. "Yes sir!" He motions for you to follow. As you walk through the giant workshop, Krennic barks at four Death Troopers. They fall in line behind you and Krennic. Even though you're (height), the Death Troopers look intimidating, like they tower far above your head.

You enter the Raider and pass through the halls which are flocking around the ship. You see Felici and Daeny heading for the bridge. They look at you. Daeny nods his head as a sign of acknowledgment while Felici bears a large mischievous smile. Felici mouths 'Orson and (Name), sitting in a tree!' You mouth back 'Shut up!' Felici winks before skipping off, Daeny jogging to keep up.

You shake your head and turn your attention to Krennic. Krennic's eyes are on Felici and Daeny. Oh no. You can't help but feel a small blush keep up your face. Had he seen what Felici said? You might as well die of embarrassment if that was so.

Krennic doesn't mention it if he did see. He brings you and the Death Troopers straight to the engine room. "DT-RY, DT-MA, stand guard. DT-NE, DT-ME, start checking the stability of the engine. (L/Name), this way." He steps into the engine and down to where the large repulsers are.

The room is hardly big enough to hold more than five people. Krennic stops and warns you "The electricity in the ship should be partially running for other tests farther up. I'll shut it off down in the engines but for now, make sure you don't step on any of the live wires. Wouldn't want you to become a human lightning bolt." You can't agree more.

It's a winding path. While the walkway was about as close to straight as it could get, making sure to avoid stepping on the live wires was a challenge. You did it just fine. On the other hand, Krennic got shocked by a smaller wire.

The two of you stop a in front of a large panel. "I haven't told many others, but one of the reasons the Raider was grounded was because there was a programme glitch. A misinterpreted message from the control center down to this engine. I know you're better at working with this stuff than I am, which is why I brought you down." He pulls out two wrenches and hands you one. "Use that (height) of yours to unscrew the bolts that are easier for you to reach rather than me." You nod.

It's a taxing task. You and Krennic spend a good ten minutes wrenching off the bolts before you can finally pop off the panel. Behind the panel is a little computer. Krennic enters the passcode for it and then steps back to let you take over. Meanwhile, he checks the rest of the engine. You can see by his angered expression that something was wrong with the design of the engine. When he finds it, Krennic leaves the room. He comes back without his cape and a toolbox in hand. Krennic taps through an electricity panel before he begins in bolting parts of the engine.

You both work in silence for about an hour. Every now and then, the silence was broken by the squeaking of metal against metal. Each time you hear it, you glance over to make sure Krennic hasn't been crushed as he works, even though the Death Trooper that has joined you two would probably save him. You don't realize how much you glance over and watch him until his eye catches yours. He raises an eyebrow and you feel yourself blushing again. "(L/Name), come over here." You do obediently. Krennic send the Death Trooper away, leaving just you two alone. "Any progress?"

"Quite a bit, sir," You say.

"You don't have to be so formal when it's just the two of us." You can't help but feel confused. What is he hinting at? Krennic chuckles softly. "Or you can be as formal as you want. I don't mind."

"Why are you telling me this?" You ask.

"No reason." That's a lie. He always has a reason.

You suddenly realize how close you two are. This wasn't the first time this had happened. Not wanting to make Krennic feel uncomfortable, you step away and walk back to work on the programme. He watches you for a moment before passing by you to check on the bolts and screws that hold the engine to the ship.

It's only a few more minutes before everything clicks and you find the glitch. You quickly override the glitch and type in some clean code. Then you throw your arms into the air. "Yes!"

Krennic is by your side in a moment. "You got it?"

"I think so. I just hope it works," You admit.

He places his hand on your shoulder and gives it a small squeeze. You feel a funny tingling sensation as he does so. It's almost like you enjoy this gesture of praise from him. "I'm sure it will. You aren't the best computer scientist the Empire had for no good reason."

You can't help but laugh a little. This reminds you of last night, when he was joking around. You and Krennic look into each other's eyes, and you probably stay that way too long. Finally you break away and turn your eyes to the ground. "Sorry," you say, blushing a little.

Krennic shrugs. "Whatever you're sorry for, don't be. You have no reason to be now." He releases your shoulder. You and Krennic smile at each other. Then he looks down, his cheeks slightly red. "Uh, I should probably give you something else to do."

You're about to respond when you have a strange hunch someone is watching. You turn around and see a woman who doesn't look like she works here pass in front of the open back of the engine. She tosses in a spray paint bottle as she passes. You frown. "Stay here," you say to Krennic. You call after her. "Ma'am, can you please not litter?" Too late. She's out of hearing range. You sigh and walk over to pick up the trash. As you approach it, you feel like something's wrong.

The label is in view and suddenly you realize this isn't a spray paint bottle. Oh shit. It was a can of explosives. And it's on the last five seconds. You spin on your heel. Your heart is pounding and your legs feel like lead as you force them to move, your pace picking up without mere moments. Tears are in your eyes from not blinking and from the cold air whipping by your scleras. You only find the strength to scream one word "ORSON!!!" You make a beeline for Krennic.

Orson looks confused and extremely concerned. His mouth is partially open to allow words out when the explosion goes off. You don't see it since your back is facing that direction but you can feel the burning against your calves. You're thrown forwards. Your hands search for something to grip as your sight tunnels in. Your head feels like it's being split in half. The last thing you remember is ramming into Krennic's body and knocking him over.

Apparently I spelled program as programme... I really should not be writing stuff when I'm 90% asleep.
