IV. A Gesture of Reassurance

Where were we last? Oh yeah, we need to finish up the first day of your apprenticeship.

I don't own anything.
==========================================
The day is finally over. It was long and exhausting but you still enjoyed it. You and Krennic return to his office around 20:50. As soon as the door is closed, Krennic turns on his heel and faces you. He studies you for a moment and whatever he's thinking, he sure doesn't make it obvious. You try to read him anyway, though you doubt you'll ever figure out what his mind is on.

After a moment or two of staring, he takes a deep breath and exhales slowly. "Well (Name), I must say I am quite ecstatic you are my apprentice. You've shown yore capable of more than I thought you would be."

Ecstatic? That's a strong descriptive word. You can't help but frown, and in response to your expression, Krennic becomes clearly confused. Besides ecstatic, Krennic said something quite out of character, or at least why you know of him. Maybe you weren't hearing things correctly so you confirm with him. "Did you just call me by my first name?" You ask. Your suspicions are confirmed when he seems shocked and then pretend to be just as confused as you. "I didn't know we were already on first name terms."

"Don't take any offense in my use of it," He responds. Now it's your turn to be shocked. Again, this seems to be out of character for Krennic. Or was this the other side of him that he rarely showed. Was he... teasing you?

Krennic waves his hand dismissively. "You're free to go whenever, (Miss/Mr.) (L/Name). I expect to see you tomorrow in my office, one minute earlier than today."

You can't help but smile. "Will do, sir!" You say and salute. "Good night, sir." Then you leave the room.

You head back to the sleeping quarters. You have to share a room with six other people (probably because the ship ran out of room for separate bedrooms years before you came). It's not the worst thing in the world. All six of you have pretty good friends and by the time you get into the room, four of them are asleep. The fifth and only one awake is the crazy Mon Calamari friend of yours, Felici Haz. Felici is kind of weird and seems to have nothing set in stone for their life. You aren't even sure what gender they were. Some days it was a female, other days it was a male, and sometimes it was both or neither.

"So! How was he?" Felici hisses from across the room. "Was he terrifying or terrifying hot?"

"What?" You say. You heard Felici clearly, you just didn't know what to respond.

"You heard me." Felici rolls out of bed and walks over. "Was he terrifying?"

"At times, yes."

"Was he terrifyingly hot?"

"He's way past his prime, Felici! Plus, he's my boss. And we shouldn't be talking about him like this behind his back."

"Just askin'." Felici climbs back into bed. You crawl up the ladder to the upper bunk above Felici where you sleep and roll to your side. You set your watch alarm for 05:30 and fall asleep relatively quick.

Your alarm blared right on cue and you rouse yourself and get ready for the day. You're the first one up out of your friends , which is probably a good thing. At least it means you won't be late. And you can get to the shower first. You take the two and a half hour time to eat, wash up, and do the room chores (it seems like your roommates piled their chores onto you) before you go to Krennic's. You arrive at the door at 07:58. Unsure if you should go in yet or not, you wait outside until eight strikes. Then you head in.

Krennic isn't at his desk. "Director?" You call. No answer. So you search the room. Not that you worry anything bad happened to him. Okay, maybe a little... still it never hurts to check. You search in the walk-in closet filled with datachips. Then you peek in the bathroom. Finally you start looking around in stupid areas, like under the desk. When you're sure you have cleared the whole room, you decide to wait. You glance at your watch and realize it's been ten minutes. Well, now he's the late one.

Another ten minutes pass and you start to worry more. Krennic doesn't seem like he'd be the kind of person to be late. Maybe something happened? You get up and begin looking around the entire ship. If he returns to his office and you aren't there, well it was worth the risk of punishment.

You see General Gillan in the hallway. You stop him and ask if he's seen Krennic. "Not of recent. The last time I saw him, he was talking with Governor Tarkin."

"Thank you," you say and nearly sprint off to Tarkin's office. That Grand Moff! He was probably doing something horrible to Krennic! Wait, why did you care? You decide to ask that to yourself later.

You reach Tarkin's office just as Krennic comes storming out. He brushes right by you, not even bothering to acknowledge your presence. Confused, you run after him. "Director!" He doesn't seem to hear you so you take a shortcut through the ship to arrive at his office before him. You slip inside and straighten your uniform just seconds before he comes bashing through the door. He stops and stares at you for a moment. You're not sure what he's thinking but whatever it is, it's coming off as almost a glare towards you. Or maybe it was the glare left over from when he was talking to Tarkin? "Director Krennic," you address.

Krennic seems to relax a little at your voice. "Private (L/Name)." He steps inside and lets the door slide shut behind him. "Forgive me for the delay. I had some... other duties to attend to this morning."

"Apology accepted." It's not like you're mad at him to start with.

Krennic wanders over to his desk and sits down. You take the seat across from him and wait patiently for him to say something. While you wait, you decide to try and read him. From the stories passed around the Raider, you know that he easily expresses his emotions. Perhaps you could understand his sudden outburst from Tarkin's office just by looking at him.

The first thing you notice is that he's visibly tired. You noticed this yesterday but it seems worse today. Was he not sleeping enough? Maybe that's why his emotions were so easy to snap. The next thing you see is that he's still angry. But it's not just hatred angry. There's something about the way he grits his teeth and his shaky breathing. Was it fear? Annoyance? Humiliation? Maybe a mix of everything?

Krennic then turns his head towards you, locking his sharp blue eyes into your (e/c) ones. "(L/Name), go get me some coffee," he nearly groans.

"Yes sir." You stand up and head for the door before asking "How do you like it?"

He shrugs. "Black is fine." You hurry off, not wanting him to wait for you too long.

It takes only a moment to get down to the kitchens and use one of the coffee pots. You pour a rich mug of hot black coffee and return to Krennic's office as quickly as possible, at the same time as carefully as possible. You don't intend to spill a single drop.

You arrive in Director Krennic's office within ten minutes after you left. "I'm sorry for taking so l-" you begin before your body is gripped with ice and you're paralyzed in half stride.

When you can move again, you do so in slow and quiet movements. You tiptoe over to his desk and set the coffee down. You take a moment to assess the situation. Krennic is too heavy for you to move without waking him which leaves the only option of letting him stay exactly where he was; his arms on his desk as a makeshift pillow. You carefully slip the datapen out of his hand. You might as well take over his work while he sleeps. Hopefully it wasn't too hard to understand without prior knowledge.

You tap into his datapad (you had figured out what the lock code was based on how his fingers moved) and discover that it's just a pile of paperwork. As much as you don't want to, you scrutinize each sentence for the paperwork just to get a feel of what needs to be done. Unfortunately there's not enough information for you to know what's what. You shut off the datapad and set it down.

Something makes you look over at Krennic. His face is contorted into a pained expression. Maybe he was dreaming about something from the past? You're not sure but whatever it is, it bothers you to see him this way and you want to stop the dream. You reach over and placing your hand gingerly on his. Krennic doesn't react right away and you wonder if waking him is the better option. Then you begin to see him relax and he shifts so that your hand falls into his.

You hoist yourself into a sitting position on his desk, making sure to keep your hand in his the entire time. And while you wait for him to wake, you drink the coffee. He wasn't going to drink it anytime soon based on how deeply he was sleeping and you couldn't let a good cup of coffee fall to waste.
