46: Living Beyond Subsistence
Katherlynne pointed as Heski, Kario, and Bhun Uyi followed her behind.
"I believe she should be in the next cell to the right." She said.
"Okay, thanks." Bhun Uyi responded. He glanced around the cells. They seem so empty and clean. It's untouched.
"There she is." Katherlynne let out a sigh of relief as she rubbed the lone leaf on the Youmlay berry, glowing it and pointing at Valencia. She's alive. Thank goodness. Valencia's hair flowed and fell to the floor, so gentle and relaxed. Her eyes were bloodshot, but only tinted in the red from the tears she bursted and screamed. Valencia also seemed to be healed, and her hands sat on her lap as she gazed at each of the people who stared back at her.
"So, Valencia." Heski started. "We are planning to create a new Oceanuris. Where we will lead for the sake of the people and life. And you will no longer be the absolute Qa, for you have caused suffering for them for too long." Heski didn't hold back on his words. Katherlynne reached out her arm to Heski and bit her lip. That's a bit harsh. She expected Valencia to fight back for her face. But she simply smiled back.
For she was now free of the strings and fetters that they tied and controlled her with long ago.
"Okay." She replied. Heski raised both his eyebrows.
"No objections?" Bhun Uyi asked. Valencia gazed down. "We will still need your help, though. To help lead Oceanuris. You've had a lot of experience–even if it wasn't very beneficial for the people–and you're immortal, so we can't kill you." Katherlynne and Valencia shared a quick glance at each other, before Valencia compressed her lips and they both stayed quiet. "So, we are thinking of teaching the people how to defend themselves."
"Like an army?"
"A bunch of other stuff, too." He added. "Branches of authority and we will all take care of each part. That way, we can always hear another perspective, and keep in touch with the people as much as possible. We will destroy the walls that border Oceanuris, and make the place glow and a place where we can live."
Valencia bit the inside of her lip at the thought of living.
"Valencia, I don't know if you are still willing to live for the people. And we're sorry for burning up your Manor. But, we want to create a new Oceanuris. Where we can all see the light."
Katherlynne handed Kario the key as he inserted it into the lock. Click, click. The metal door swung open, and Valencia stood up.
"Alright, then." Valencia said. She gave Heski a distant look–as she'd always had–but with a much more relieved expression. A smile was in the soul of her eyes.
She could breathe, by her own flame now.
Oceanuris can live. She can live.
But with all the light taken, what should I do? What did living mean? Farther than subsisting and barely surviving by a string, gravestones, and her own tears?
She knew she'd still die anyways. She wasn't immortal, and could die from literally anything. She frowned at the thought.
So what was the meaning of it all?
Where was the light the others could see so clearly?
