Her hands were ice cold, joints slow to grab the fraying rope above her.

"We have to go, now!" A voice yelled, struggling to be heard above the howl of the wind. She could hear the desperation of the voice as she failed to grab the rope yet again. Another voice shouted down, this one much older and harsher than the other.

"If she can't make it, we have to leave without her, wasting all this time and effort! Reach, you stupid bitch!" She strained, barely able to stand after being chained to the ground for so long. She tried to jump up to the stringy ends of the rope, only to slip on the frosty bricks below and fall.

"That's it, we can't stay any longer! This was a waste!" The second voice shouted, and the rope began to retract back into the dark, stormy sky.

"No! Just a few more minutes, she can make it!" The younger voice above cried, and the rope swayed up and down as the two fought for control. She finally picked herself off the icy floor and reached for the rope once more. It hung only inches above her finger tips.

"Enough! We're done, the mission is a fail. C'mon boys, take us up and out." The harsher voice softened slightly.

"Sorry kid, but this was our only shot." She stared up into the darkness, trying to reach out to be taken from this wintery hell. She wanted to jump and scream and yell, but she couldn't. She hadn't been able to speak in years, the guards had made sure of that when she got there. She could almost feel the pain of the knife against her tongue from all those years ago as she heard the two voices retreat into the night. She listened, hoping they would come back. In the morning, the jailer found her body, frozen stiff, collapsed beneath a hole in her cell, tears stuck to her cheeks. There was no funeral, they simply tossed her half frozen corpse in the waves below, returning her body to the sea it came from.
