00: The Not-So Lovely Tale of Getting a Job
🎁 Blake Christian – Nov. 30th 2014
“I’m sorry, we just filled our last position.” Well, crap.
Grumbling profanities under my breath, I stepped away from the cashier and walked out of the fifth store – my fifth attempt at a winter job.
Honestly, I don’t understand what the big deal is about getting a winter job – I mean, I get that I have rent to pay and I just got fired from working at Chili’s – but still, why can’t I be a Grinch this time of year and sit on the sofa, watching Netflix and making runs to Starbucks? Oh, right, it’s because I have a persistent, bossy roommate who insisted that I get a job so we can finally buy some Christmas decorations and actually look like festive hostesses for this year’s party.
The only option she had to get me out of the house and look for a job was to kick me out.
And after getting kicked out of the apartment by my roommate to “go get a job you couch potato” – her exact words, with a little rant starting it off – I honestly didn’t think that my first thought for getting a job would be some pretentious shopping mall. Honestly, I should’ve walked toward anything else – hell, I would’ve preferred working at McDonald’s besides this place. I guess it could’ve been Fate’s way of telling me that there’s something great to come out of it, but what the hell does Fate know? She’s the one that kicked me out of the apartment in thirty degree weather.
Now, to any other New Yorker this seems like a walk in the park – or at least Fate seems to think so, since she didn’t even let me grab a coat – but being originally from Florida, it was more like a walk in Antarctica.
So here I was, still shivering from the cold weather looking for any other stores that would catch my interest – or at least will be bearable to deal with this winter. I’ll have to give Fate a piece of my mind when I come back to the apartment after finding a decent job, maybe I’ll force her into making dinner.
“You’re looking for a job?”
Holding a hand to my heart in surprise, I closed my eyes for a second before opening them to form a glare at the person who nearly gave me a heart attack. Blonde, perky and short were the first things to pop into my mind when seeing this girl.
“How do you know?” I questioned slowly.
“Well, most people here are looking for a job?” I found that doubtful. “Plus, I just saw you strike out at Forever 21, so.” Whoop, there it is. “A job?”
Tucking a few tufts of hair behind my ear, I crossed my arms not caring that my résumé crinkled with this stance. After a few moments of analyzing her cheesy Christmas costume – I presume she was dressed as an elf because of the green ensemble, the hat, pointy ears, overly hair sprayed hair and make-up made cheeks – I shrugged and let my arms lay loose to my sides. Hey, I was desperate.
“Yeah,” I sighed, wondering what this girl could possibly suggest.
She smiled widely and followed my previous actions by analyzing me. “You’d make a wonderful elf!”
Pardon?
