Chapter 15

A/N: The video above does not belong to me. It belongs to the person who uploaded it on YouTube.

Barcode's POV

I tried to keep focused on assisting my dad with going back home safely after his eye procedure.

Throughout the wait outside the eye doctor's clinic, while my dad was undergoing his eye procedure, my mind kept on going back to what Jeff had said to me just before my dad called.

Jeff had said that he was going to tell me something but I had to promise him first that after his revelation I would not try to avoid him.

I gave him my promise but I had felt a bit unsettled. What was he going to tell me that might make me want to avoid him after that.

The moment my dad and I got home safely, I went to my room and closed the door.

Then I took out my phone from my pocket and tapped on Jeff's number.

What the hell, my call was directed to his voicemail after several rings.

I tried calling him a second time.

Same thing happened.

I was tempted to sneak out of the house and go over to Jeff's house but it was getting dark and I  did not want to take public transportation at night.

When he did not take my third call, I gave up and went down for dinner.

Dinner was almost over when I heard a text notification on my phone.

I finished my dinner before asking to be excused from the table.

I quickly took out my phone from my pocket even as I was taking the stairs up to my room two steps at a time.

I swiped on my screen to open the text. The message was from Jeff.

Sorry I missed your calls.

He gave no explanation as to why he missed my calls.

Not long after, another text from him came in.

I won't be available this weekend to give you guitar lessons, sorry.

Again, no explanation as to why he was not available this weekend for my guitar lessons. What the fuck was wrong with him.

Instead of texting him back I decided to call him.

After several rings I was directed to his voicemail.

Okay this was unacceptable.

I waited for my parents to retire to their room before I quietly went down to the living room and out the front door.

I waited at the corner street for a bus that would take me to the street where Jeff lived.

Thankfully, even though it was dark, the street where he lived was well lighted.

With my heart in my throat I pressed the buzzer at his gate.

I waited impatiently for someone, preferably Jeff, to open the small door at one side of the gate.

After thirty seconds and no one came, I pressed on the buzzer once more.

Finally I heard some shuffling sounds coming towards the gate.

It was Jeff's family's housekeeper. She seemed to be expecting me to be the one who had buzzed at the gate.

"I'm sorry, Barcode, but Jeff has gone to bed. He hates being awakened once he has gone off to sleep," the housekeeper said in a regretful tone of voice.

Why did it seem to me, though, that her words seemed to have been rehearsed.

Why was Jeff avoiding me? I thought I was the one who needed to give him assurance that I was not going to avoid him after he revealed something to me. Now, why is it Jeff who was avoiding me?

I nodded wordlessly to the housekeeper and started walking away from the gate.

Some instinct told me to look up at the window on the second floor of Jeff's house.

The curtain moved and I distinctly saw his figure behind the curtain quickly walking away from the window.

Yes, he was definitely avoiding me.
