A Talk with Sans
Heya.
You can drop the knife, you know.
Let's have a chat.
We're friends, right? I ask cause the hours we spent hanging out at Grillby's seemed genuine. You're not the talkative type, but you're a good listener. Humans haven't listened to us much in the past.
It's been a long time since the humans drove us underground. You'd think monsters would have won the war. We had magic. Back then we had the numbers too. But you know what made the humans so deadly?
Their determination. Their will to win no matter what made them stronger than a monster ever could be.
But you're even more dangerous. Cause to you, we're all just a game.
Let me ask: What counts as "experience" living on the surface?
Take me. I've met other humans. I've seen pretty much every part of the Underworld and beyond. I've watched Mettaton perform his 1,000,000,000th show. That's what you'd call experience, right? Life itself? I bet if you battled me, which a) I hope it wouldn't come to that, and b) you wouldn't win anyway, the game would reward you with lots of EXP.
That is your motivation for killing, right?
But then, do you wonder why killing monsters like Moldsmall gave you barely any EXP at all? Or maybe you weren't surprised at all. Why? Because he wasn't a challenge to kill?
I don't think you realize what you're doing. I told you this already. Things work differently down here. Us monsters aren't strong like humans. We don't gain strength from our ability to hurt others. It's our magic that makes us strong, and the hope that someday we can return to the surface.
Personally I find it strange how humans quantify "experience" as EXP. Is that how humans live now? Raking up EXecution Points? Kill or be killed? Sounds like a brutal world to live in.
Anyway, you're not in trouble. I promised Toriel I'd keep you safe. Why? Well, let's just say you're important to us. Not to stoke your ego or anything. I wouldn't want to be in your shoes.
So that said...do us a favour and keep those execution points to a minimum. As long as you can do that, I'll let you explore the rest of the Underworld. And hopefully we'll both find what we're looking for.
I won't tell anyone what happened. He's turned to dust already, so no one would know.
But I'll be keeping an eye socket on you. If you do something like that again, I just might have to kill you.
Kidding! I can't. Toriel's orders. Plus I'd hate to be a hypocrite. If anyone will kill you, it's Undyne. She's pretty ruthless, so good luck! And when in doubt, tell her one of my jokes. She might find them humerus.
If you have the time and interest, try playing Undertale. It's full of clever twists. I've also linked to the background music for the Waterfall area. I find the music soothing.
