Chapter 3
"Are you sure you're okay all by yourself?" Claire asked, her voice laced with concern. The silence that followed was heavy, a tangible weight pressing down on both women. Mia lost in thought, stared blankly at the television screen, the flickering images blurring her vision.
"I don't know," she murmured, her voice barely audible. "I'm scared, Claire. I'm so scared."
Claire's voice, a beacon of hope in the darkness, offered reassurance. "You're not alone, Mia," she assured her. "We'll get through this together."
Mia closed her eyes, the weight of the world pressing down on her shoulders. The city outside, once a source of inspiration, now seemed a hostile force, a looming threat.
As she listened to Claire's voice, a sense of calm washed over her, a momentary respite from the storm raging within.
Claire's voice, a soothing balm to Mia's troubled soul, filled the silence. "Don't worry too much, Mia. Just stay home and lock your doors. Don't go out anymore," she advised, her words laced with concern.
Mia nodded, her eyes heavy with fatigue. The weight of the world seemed to rest on her shoulders, a crushing burden that threatened to consume her. The city, once a source of inspiration and excitement, now seemed like a dangerous labyrinth, a place where shadows lurked and danger lurked.
She thanked Claire for her support, her voice barely a whisper. The comforting sound of Claire's voice, a familiar melody, slowly began to soothe her frayed nerves. As she hung up the phone, a sense of peace washed over her, a fleeting moment of tranquillity during the storm.
Mia bit her lip, her teeth gently nipping at the tender skin. She closed her eyes, breathing softly, each inhalation a deliberate attempt to calm her racing heart. The gentle rhythm of her breath, a soothing melody, filled the quiet room. The weight of the world, a heavy burden, seemed to lift, replaced by a sense of tranquillity.
"Alright," she murmured, her voice barely audible. "I'll try to settle down for now." With a sigh, she turned her attention to the television, the flickering images a distraction from her troubled thoughts. As she sank deeper into the couch, the soft hum of the television lulled her into a state of calm, a temporary respite from the storm raging within.
"Just relax and don't worry about a thing," Claire's voice echoed through the phone, a soothing balm to Mia's troubled soul. The gentle tone, a comforting presence, washed over Mia, easing her anxiety. The weight of the world, a heavy burden, seemed to lift, replaced by a sense of tranquillity.
Mia breathed deeply, her chest rising and falling with each breath. She leaned back into the couch, her body sinking into the soft cushions. A glance at the wall clock revealed the late hour; the clock struck one, its ticking a stark reminder of the passing time.
"Okay," she murmured, her voice barely audible. "I have to go. Good night, Claire. Thanks for keeping me company." A faint smile played on her lips as she thanked her friend. Her fingers, restless and nervous, fidgeted with the phone, a silent testament to her anxiety.
"No worries, Mia. I'm glad to help. Good night, see you tomorrow," Claire replied, her voice filled with warmth. With a final goodbye, Mia hung up the phone, the silence of the night enveloping her once more. She turned off the television, the darkness of the room mirroring the darkness within her. As she drifted off to sleep, she clung to the hope that the morning would bring a new day, a fresh start.
