Chapter 6- Track Meet
"In third place, for 200 meter hurdles, Charity Stoback." The professional looking announcer read, as Charity took her place on the podium. The crowd politely clapped, while a dad yelled "That's my baby!" from the bleachers.
"Second place, McKenna Mathers!" The announcer said a little too enthusiastically. The crowd went wild. McKenna was a rookie from South Carolina, yet an all-star in Track and Field.
"And in first place..." The announcer said suspensefully, looking up from his paper. Everyone pounded their feet as a drumroll, even though they already knew who had won.
"Vivian Wodlock!"
Vivian blushed as she made her way toward the podium. She passed a line of people wearing business suits and holding out their hands, wanting her to shake them.
"Uh, no thanks." Vivian said to the people she barely knew, and hugged her coach.
"No surprise my super star won!" Coach Raymond said, which was the first time Vivian heard anything positive come out of his mouth.
She took her place on the podium, congratulating the second and third place winners. Moms and dads with digital cameras started snapping away.
"Viv!" Maura shouted, and dropped her megaphone. She gave Vivian a big thumbs up.
After the flashes of cameras settled down, Vivian immediately hopped down from the podium and gave Maura a long squeeze.
"I can't believe you won the STATE track meet!" Maura said.
"I still don't believe either." Vivian laughed.
She looked around at her competition. Charity, the third place winner, was hugging her dad who was ecstatic that she had placed.
"I love you dad." Charity said, kissing him on the cheek.
Those were four words Vivian was never able to say.
All of her life, it had just been Vivian, her brother Kyle, and her mom. She never had a "Dad" or "Father" or a "Daddy".
Her mother explained the story to her over and over. But it never seemed right.
"You're father passed away when you were a little toddler."
That was as much as she would say.
"How did he pass away?"
"Why don't we have pictures of him?"
"What was his name?"
Those were questions Vivian asked her self everyday. Her mother claimed she wouldn't be able to remember her father, because she was at such a young age when he passed away. But she always had this weird image of him inside her head.
"Hey Vivian." Adam said, interrupting her train of thought.
"Uh, hi." Vivian said shyly.
"Congrats. I knew you would win." Adam said and opened his arms for a hug. Vivian ignored the gesture, leaving him looking like a star fish.
"Viv!" Maura whispered shouted.
"You have to make a move!" Maura insisted.
"Well thanks, Adam, for coming to congratulate me, uh, and I'll see you at work this Friday?" Vivian said, not in the mood for coming up with a flirty response.
"Yeah... I guess you will." Adam said with disappointment in his voice and walked away.
"Wait! Adam!" Maura called.
"What are you doing?!" Vivian yelled.
"Helping you." Maura said. Adam turned around, and Maura motioned for him to come back.
"What?" Adam asked.
"Vivian has a question for you." Maura said enthusiastically.
"Okay, what's your question?" Adam asked.
"Uh.." Vivian said and blushed.
"Maura, I'm not THAT interested!" Vivian tried to tell her telepathically. She couldn't ask him out, she couldn't. It was so awkward and time was ticking, so she blurted out the first question that came to her head.
"Where do you dry clean your clothes?" Vivian said nervously, looking at his faded blue button up. Adam raised his eyebrows, then pulled a piece of paper out of his jean pocket.
"Here's their number." Adam said, handing Vivian the paper.
"Call it if you have any," He paused, "Questions."
Then, he turned around, and dramatically left the track.
"Ahhhh!!!" Maura squealed.
"What? He just gave me the dry cleaning number..." Vivian said, confused.
"No!! Viv! That's obviously HIS number!" Maura said, and jumped up and down.
"You HAVE to text him!" Maura said, ripped the paper out of Vivian's hands.
"No, I'm not THAT shallow." Vivian said.
"Viv, texting is the new talking. It's not the 1940's." Maura replied.
"No, if I had a boyfriend, I would make him only communicate with me by talking face to face." Vivian said, remembering the list she made when she was 8 years old, titled "My Prince Charming".
"Whatevs, but this means that he is totally interested!" Maura squealed again.
"Vivian!" Someone shouted from the bleachers Annie and Izzy ran over to her.
"Aw! You guys came!" Vivian said, and touched her heart for effect.
"How could we miss it?!" Izzy said and gave Vivian a bear hug.
"Eh my gawd, did you see second place for boys high jump? That guy is hotter than a campfire!" Annie said, ignoring Vivian's victory.
"Even I thought he was attractive." Izzy said, agreeing with Annie.
"Oh my gosh, I just won first place and all you guys want to talk about is boys!" Vivian grunted.
"Sorry." They all said apologetically.
Vivian put her hand on her hip. Then, she felt an ice cold feeling down her back, and turned around to see Gatorade being poured onto her head.
"Ah!" Vivian giggled-screamed. She was drenched. Her clothes were stuck to her wet skin and ice was stuck in her bra.
