Chapter 10
Seeing the image that draws the front page of the newspaper ensures that all the air my body possessed is gone. The image does not show an invention, murder or event. A vague picture of a dot in the blue sky. That vague dot isn't a bird, it's me on Reviri.
Everyone's eyes are fixed on it as if they see water burning. 'Is that what we hope it is?', Chea utters the words almost whispering. The headline leaves no doubt, the Night Riders after 1,000 years! 'Don't suck up too soon. It's gotta be a normal rider'. 'The Night RIder were murdered decades ago and the Nazu with them.' Celeste takes away the little heap that hung in the air.
'Celeste, what do you see in this picture? A black dragon with a Rider on it? You can't ignore the fact that the dragon is a Nazu', my father has risen during his words and has his hand on the picture. Celeste's eyes glide over me for a second before she glances back at Jamie. 'They're extinct and they will stay that way. This must be a good example of backlighting'.
'You don't dare believe it' My mother gets involved in the conversation and stops Celeste in her way to the door. 'Nuri I was there. I saw them shot out of the sky, burned and lost their lives. They're dead.' With those words Celeste runs past me and disappears into the hallway.
The moment I want to open my mouth I am interrupted 'Rafiki follows me'. I sigh deeply and let a last glance glide past the space and the people discussing it before I start following Celeste. I run a bit behind her before I walk next to her. Anger is palpable with the lady walking next to me with long steps. Her clenched fists also give something away.
I'd better keep my mouth shut, but on the contrary. 'Why don't you dare believe it?' It leaves my mouth before I know it, as I curse myself. Her dark-brown eyes are on me right away. 'I'll tell you everything, on the roof'. The roof's been a place we spend a lot of time since I was young. Celeste seems to be calming down.
Silently we continue our way through the corridor, through the wooden door, up the stairs and through the last door before we sit on the roof. All the time we look silently to the city in front of us. 'During the murders of the Night Riders, the world was at war. After the nymphs, the Night Riders are the ones who keep this world going. The dragons they take with them are called Nazu. The Nazu are the fastest, strongest and most feared dragons in existence'
The joke of this conversation is that I'm very sure the Nazu aren't extinct, I'm carrying one around my neck. 'When war broke out between my father and as good as the rest of the world, he murdered them. Nobody knew they could be killed in the first place. With poisoned water and a spell, he did it anyway. The water tasted the dragons from the inside, making them weak enough to shoot and kill'
She's stopping for a moment. 'When the first of the six that existed was shot, the world was in shock. Everyone thought they were inviolable, had eternal life and were stronger than everyone else. When the other four were articulated, the war unleashed itself to its apogee. The last Rider was never found. The last Nazu was killed in the Andes years later.' This story does her more than you'd expect. Her eyes speak a total pain, especially in the last part of her story.
'Since then, the world has been full of murder, war and turmoil. The Night Riders are the ones who protected the lines of life. The ones who let our world keep their strength and keep the cycle going. When the lines were exposed, everyone who saw power in them wanted a part of it. The lines have since weakened tremendously and will break without the Night Riders. We will lose our strength and eventually everything will die out.'. My life gets more complicated every day.
'And now what? What if they're really back?' I doubt my question as he leaves my mouth. 'There will be a quest that is countless. Everyone will want the Rider by his side, others will want him dead and others will want to use him' I should be surprised but I don't really feel anything about it. This is not new information, I've read too much for that
'How can they exist again when they've all been killed?' This is the only question I've never been able to answer from the books myself. 'There's a legend going around that the last rider never died. Because of this, the line was never broken, so a new one will be born'. I just nod.
It'll be quiet for a while before Celeste puts herself back on her feet. For a while she looks into the distance while her black dress is gracefully moved through the air. My head is in an unthinkable duel. I knew from the moment I received the witch's egg that it was not a normal egg, I knew that the powers I carry were not only caused by my curse but I didn't know that there are people who have been looking for me for hundreds of years.
I knew that Night Riders have existed and that my powers have many similarities to what I read. I just never wanted to believe that I really am the last of my kind. Not only am I the last of my kind, but I am the last of my kind to be dying and carry the curse of death with me.
I'm taken out of my mind by Celeste's ticking heels. She has made her way back to the door and has her eyes on me. Her eyes try to read me, to decipher my secrets. 'Rafiki, let this be a warning' After the words leave her mouth, she turns around and disappears through the door. Words that carry more knowledge than she pretends to know.
