Chapter 8 - Lurking Danger

Daybreak had come, but the entire jungle was still bathed in a semi darkness. Thunder continued to roar as the rain showed no sign of coming to an end.

Jesse was lying in her bed, her head resting on the pillow as she stared out of the window at the falling rain. Her eyes followed the small streams down the glass panes, silently tracing the droplets. Lluna was lying across the entire foot of the bed, sleeping soundly.

Everything had been a jumble for Jesse ever since the battle. Her memory of getting injured was vague, and everything after that was merely a dark blur.

She had come to at the crack of dawn that morning, her entire body drenched in a cold sweat, mind foggy and head pounding. Her friends had been with her, explaining what had happened. Or attempting to explain what happened, considering most of what was said went in one ear and out the other for Jesse.

All she wanted to know was whether they were all still okay. Upon getting confirmation that none of her friends were severely injured, Jesse had relaxed enough to slip back into a restless sleep.

It's been a few hours. While she still felt like somebody coming off of a cold, the worst had passed and Jesse could think properly again.

Jesse sighed, burying her face into her pillow. Despite still feeling incredibly tired, sleep was the last thing she wanted to do at that moment.

She wondered where her friends were, whether they were asleep like she suspected, or casually going about their daily routine.

It's worthwhile to check. Jesse decided, finally sitting up in bed. Lluna snorted as Jesse got up, lifting her head slightly. Then she just yawned and lay back down. Jesse stroked Lluna's coat as she walked by, heading for her bedroom door.

The tree-house was quiet, but Jesse could hear some noise coming from the living room. Stifling a yawn, she walked down the hallway in that direction. Sure enough, Lukas was there, in the process of fitting a new oak door into place. Right, that was a detail Jesse forgot about.

Having noticed her movement from the corner of his eye, Lukas lifted his head. Jesse had to refrain from flinching, only then seeing all the bruises and cuts that littered his skin.

"Jesse!" Lukas's face lit up when he saw her.

Abandoning his work, he came over to her and gave her a tight, yet gentle, hug.

"It's good to see you up on your feet." Lukas said, as he pulled away from her. His face grew serious. "You weren't looking very well a while back. Feeling better?"

"Much better." Jesse responded, smiling. "Where is everybody else?" She asked as Lukas went back to the door.

"Most of us have been sleeping, like you." Lukas explained as he continued working on the door. "I decided to haul myself out of bed twenty minutes ago, because I wasn't sure how well a few wood planks could keep out any unwanted visitors.

Olivia is upstairs at her workstation. She was devastated about how easily the leather part of your armour tore, so she's been fixing it and reinforcing the weak spot."

Jesse felt a bit guilty, knowing how easy it was for Olivia to tear herself up over something small. She made a mental note to go talk to Olivia later.

"Axel probably still would have been snoring away, if his desire for breakfast didn't overcome him." Lukas went on, chuckling slightly. "Anyway, he went down to feed the horses a few minutes ago and check that everything is still fine down in the barn.

Petra's the only one who's still in bed. The fighting was a little hard on that shoulder of hers, whether she likes it or not, she'll have to take it easy for a few days."

"I'm glad nobody got seriously hurt." Jesse said, leaning with her shoulder against the wall. "What will our next move be? After all, the command block..."

"Is still out there, I know." Lukas put a hand on Jesse's arm. "But as long as we stay away from it, it can't hurt us. We have time on our side."

"You're right." Jesse said, smiling vaguely. "I supposed rest and recovery are a little high on the priority list."

------------------

Two figures were slowly moving down the tunnel, feeling their way along the wall. The slightest movement from a shadow made them jump, anxiously looking around.

"I don't like this." One of them whispered to the other. "Something is going to jump out at us at any moment."

"You know we have to do this." The other one responded. "It's crucial to the plan."

"I know that." They rolled their eyes. "But why should we be the ones to do this?"

"You can go ask him."

"Hell no, I like living."

The two chuckled slightly, continuing to head deeper into the darkness of the cave. They slowly crept along the perimeter of the dark all, one of them taking out a flashlight.

"Crap." The one with the light breathed, pointing at the enchanted door. More specifically the hole beside the door.

"If it's no longer there, he's going to make us pay." The second one said, their eyes widening in the dark.

"Well, let's hope whoever was here is... no more." The first one said, unsheathing a stone sword.

"I really hope that." The second one agreed, pulling out an unenchanted bow and a single arrow. They grimaced. "For goodness sake, this block better be able to give us the weapons we deserve. I'm done wielding something so unreliable."

"That makes two of us." The first person replied. They glanced back at their companion. "Don't touch the door, remember. Otherwise the light will go off and the mobs will spawn."

"Yes, yes, how dumb do you think I am?"

The two of them clambered through the hole, silently thanking whoever left it there for them to get through. Both of them began to grin in victory as they were met with the light.

"It's still here." The one with the flashlight said, turning to face the other one. "It's all you now, you're the nerd here."

"I prefer Redstonist." They sneered, pulling aside their thick fur coat, to take out a tiny pouch of tools.

As the engineer of the two began to fiddle on the command block's one side with their tools, the other one casually leaned against the wall and began to eat a bag of crisps.

"You're very helpful."

"Oh shut up."

A smile formed on the engineer's lips as they gazed at the intricate redstone wiring. The other one leaned over to see what they were doing.

"You know what all that means?" They asked, pointing.

"I've been studying this the entire last month, of course I know! Now back off."

"Geez, okay, okay." The one with the crisps muttered, leaning back again.

Their elbow knocked against the small bag of tools, sending its supplies scattering.

"Whoops."

"You better pick up all my things again, or-"

"Yes, yes, I hear you."

Cursing under their breath, the engineer of the two turned back to the command block. They leaned in close, using a small tool to disturb a part of the intricate wiring.

The command block's lights flickered, before it shut down completely.

Both people whooped, high-fiving each other victoriously.

"We did it!" One said excitedly. "We actually did it!"

"Yes-" The other one turned back to the command block. "-but now it's time for step two."

Dani posting on time? Barely-

Ahh, I'm excited for things to start moving from here. Up to this point felt a tiny bit like a chore when I first wrote this, but now we're transitioning into my favourite part of the book! Ya'll only have a few easy chapters left, I'm breaking hearts after that.

So everybody came out of the battle alive, almost anti-climactic. But while they're taking it slow and recovering, two conveniently-anonymous idiots found the command block. Or more accurately came for the command block!

Any theories on who these people are? Any ideas on who they're working for? Any clue what their plan with the command block is?

See ya'll in four days!
