Chapter 4 - Suspicions
"You want to do what?" Olivia asked in horror, her eyebrows shooting up.
"I want to go back to that dungeon." Petra repeated.
"But why?" Jesse asked, tilting her head to the side. "What do you want to gain from it?"
"Information." Petra said matter-of-factly. "I'm not going to let this go until I know what's up with that place and the mobs in it."
"So you're going to blindly rush out there, with no plan, and do what exactly?" Lukas asked sceptically, only peeking over the edge of his book.
"I have a plan, for your information." Petra snapped at him. "Like I was saying before all of you decided to gasp dramatically at my words, I want to scan the place properly. Find a way past that iron door, see if there's any other sections of the place we missed."
"What about the super monsters?" Axel asked, the others either rolling their eyes or chuckling at his choice of words for it.
"We didn't know what to expect first time around, we weren't prepared." Petra explained. "I'm going there with full knowledge of what's waiting for me, armoured up and with a firm grip on Miss Butter."
"Now hold you, you're going alone?" Jesse asked, getting up from her chair and throwing up her arms. "That's suicide!"
"Jesse's right, Petra." Olivia said. "We should all do this together, and most certainly not today. We had a rough day, yesterday, you're injured-"
"Arm still works fine." Petra promptly interrupted Olivia, as she waved her right arm. She just about held back from flinching, her shoulder immediately letting her know that it didn't quite feel 'fine' yet.
"You're not going to take no for an answer, are you?" Jesse asked with a sigh.
"Nope." Petra replied matter-of-factly, crossing her arms.
"Well, if you're going to do this, you should take a light source that won't go out." Olivia said with a sigh, giving in. "I've recently been working on my improved redstone flashlights. I'll give you one of them."
"You still can't go alone." Jesse said to Petra as Olivia began walking away. "Let me come with you."
"That might not be the best idea, bud." Axel spoke up. "We still don't know what happened yesterday."
"I'm fine now." Jesse pointed out. "What are the chances that whatever it was will come back again?"
"No, Axel's right." Petra said to Jesse. "We shouldn't risk it, not until at least a few days have passed."
Jesse's shoulders sagged, but she nodded before sinking back down onto the dining chair.
"What about I come with then?" Lukas said, putting down the book he was reading.
"I don't need a babysitter, Lukas." Petra grumbled, crossing her arms.
"Of course not, but safety in numbers, am I right?" Lukas responded, making Petra groan.
But alas she didn't try to argue any more. Accepting the redstone flashlight from Olivia, Petra and Lukas said their 'see you laters' to the others, heading off to the armoury.
The light flickered slightly, the order not having been in there to get their armour or weapons in a while.
Petra scrunched up her nose at the sharp scent of dust inside the room, which was of course much sharper to her than Lukas. Rascal straight up sneezed, shaking his head.
"Been ages since we've actually needed all this gear, huh?" Lukas said to Petra as the two of them gazed at the row of armour sets against the wall.
The first was a glimmering red and gold set, with a matching helmet and a pair of engineering goggles. An elegantly crafted bow rested alongside it, with a leather quiver full of arrows. The perfect armour for a redstonist.
Next one in the row was a bulky obsidian set, with a fine emerald coating garnishing its blastproof surface. A sturdy diamond axe rested beside it. Axel's favourite things in the world, next to cake and TNT.
The next one was a lightweight iron set with an exotic purple lining to contrast against it's silver complexion. A small, yet deadly dagger came with, it's blade shimmering with a unique enchantment. Not the strongest armour in the world, but perfect from an artist's point of view such as Lukas's.
Then there was a set made out of blue steel and gold, comfortable but durable. Almost similar to Petra's old set, yet brand new and gleaming with fresh enchantments. The slot beside the set was empty, having been meant to be a resting place for Miss Butter – which Petra preferred to keep by her side 24/7.
While all the sets of armour and weapons were beautiful and unique, none of them quite matched the final set.
A hand crafted set of armour that the Order had made for Jesse to replace the broken down Star Shield. It's shining quartz surface made it look delicate and fragile, while the strong steel beneath made it one of the stronger sets there were. Finished off with a lining of prismarine, Jesse's favourite part of it all.
Resting beside it was no ordinary sword, instead a pure white blade that emitted a faint glow. Built out of pure Nether Star, powered by enchantments unknown to them all – it was the strongest weapon any of them had ever encountered.
And they were happy to have the leader of their team be its wielder.
Rascal let out and excited yap, running a circle around Petra as she equipped her armour. His tail was wagging like a flag, his tongue lolling out of the side of his mouth.
"Somebody seems excited." Lukas said, running his fingers along the blade of his dagger.
"Looking forward to tearing apart some monsters, boy?" Petra asked Rascal, resulting in him letting out another yap.
"So, what is the plan for when we get there?" Lukas asked Petra as the three of them walked out into the soft rain, heading for the stables.
"Considering you weren't originally part of the plan, you can keep yourself busy by fighting off the monsters while I work." Petra responded, a smirk forming on her lips.
Lukas simply rolled his eyes. "But what are you going to be doing?"
"Getting to the other side of that iron door." Petra responded as she lifted up her saddle, ignoring the distant pulsing that was forming in her shoulder. "It may not want to willingly open, but a pickaxe will make quick work of it."
"You saw how Rascal reacted yesterday, what if whatever is on the other side of it is dangerous?" Lukas asked her, beginning to saddle up his own horse.
"God you're full of questions." Petra muttered, tightening the girth. "I repeat my earlier statement, we'll be prepared."
"You're the one who's acting secretive." Lukas mumbled in reply as they mounted, riding the horses out of the barn.
Rascal excitedly trotted ahead of them, vigorously shaking the raindrops out of his coat. Lukas's horse soon followed the example, showering her rider with the water in her mane.
"I have my reasons." Petra said matter-of-factly.
"And I suppose you're not sharing?"
"Look." Petra turned her head to face Lukas. "I have my suspicions about that place, but they're just that. Suspicions. I could be wrong, and that's why I don't plan on saying anything until I have proof."
"I'm going to die of anticipation now." Lukas groaned. "Being this cryptic is usually an Ivor thing, not a Petra thing!"
"Compare me to that bearded atrocity one more time, and I will end you."
Lukas sighed, sinking slightly down in the saddle as he accepted that he wasn't going to get anything out of Petra. They were mostly quiet for the rest of the ride, until the dungeon came in to view.
"Did you have to pick a rainy day to do this?" Lukas asked Petra, pulling his fingers through his wet blonde hair as they tied up the horses.
"Did nature have to pick today to rain?" Petra responded bluntly, wringing out her bandanna before putting it back on.
Rascal stopped at the entrance to the cave, letting out a low, deep growl. His tail had stopped wagging, his fur stood on edge and his ears were pricked instead of calmly hanging to the sides.
"Ready?" Petra asked Lukas, switching on one of the flashlights.
"As ready as one can be for this place, I guess." Lukas responded, shrugging slightly and letting out a nervous chuckle.
"Stay on your guard." Petra reminded him as the walked inside.
Rascal stayed at the front, sniffing along the ground. His ears flickered back and fourth at the sounds of the many mobs in the distance.
"There's more than usual." Petra said, listening intently. "Monsters I mean."
"Just great." Lukas responded with a shudder. "So what do we do if we get crowded by them again? Do I just blindly continue to fight them while you do who knows what?"
"Well I had hoped they would have despawned by now, and the flashlight would help keep it that way-" Petra explained. "-but I have feeling we're not lucky."
"Oh, yay." Lukas muttered.
Suddenly Rascal stiffened, growling again. Taking it as a sign that they were close, Petra and Lukas attached the flashlights to their chestplates and unsheathed their weapons.
"While I still don't know what your plan is... good luck." Lukas said. "And be careful, okay?"
"Same goes to you." Petra responded.
The room was indeed filled with mobs, yet not as many as Petra had expected. With a flashlight revealing to her everything she couldn't see the previous time, she realised the horde was nothing compared to what they usually fought at nights.
Then again, there mobs were about ten times as strong.
Lukas and Petra immediately headed separate directions. Rascal had completely disappeared, but Petra didn't worry – knowing that she'd find him at the iron door again.
Petra flinched slightly as she slipped along the perimeter of the room, heading for the door. Clearly the most mobs had gravitated towards her friend. Admittedly, she felt a tiny bit guilty. But with his enchanted weapon and armour, Petra at least rest assured that Lukas wouldn't easily get hurt.
Unless he did something really stupid, which was well within the room of possibilities.
Petra's train of thought broke off as she ran up to the door, killing an approaching zombie mid run by sending Miss Butter straight through his skull.
Petra felt for her pickaxe, removing it from her belt. Quickly checking to make sure no mob was dangerously close, she sheathed Miss Butter and raised the pickaxe.
However, Petra was not quite prepared for the door to violently knock her back at the blow. The pickaxe not leaving as much as a dent in the iron.
Petra was quick to collect herself again after hitting the ground with a thud. She rolled over, immediately pushing herself up on her arms. That's when a shape came up next to Petra, a cold snout pressing against her face, followed by a whine.
"I'm good, Rascal." Petra reassured him, reaching up a hand to give him a quick pat.
Rascal's attention pulled away from Petra, protectively standing in front of her and growling at the approaching mobs. Assured that Rascal had her back, Petra scrambled up from the ground, feeling for her pickaxe.
Only as Petra did, did she realise that her flashlight was no longer shining. Did it break on the fall?
Petra glanced around the dark room, not seeing Lukas's light anywhere either. She called his name, to which she received no response. Biting her lip, Petra could only hope that he was okay.
Feeling through the dust on the ground, Petra's fingers wrapped around the wooden base of her pickaxe. She raised it up, looking around to once more make sure she wasn't in any danger before heading to the door. The only mob that was near her at that moment was a rather large spider, which Rascal was in process of tearing apart.
Petra swung back to the door, only just about able to notice it's glowing outline in the dark. So breaking it open was not as smart of a plan as she had thought. Maybe that's why coming up with plans was usually Jesse's job and not hers.
But it only took a few seconds for Petra to concoct a plan B. She turned to the cobblestone wall beside the door, raising her pickaxe again. She sincerely hoped the wall wasn't enchanted as well, otherwise her already-battered body was not going to like her very much once the adrenaline wore off.
Much to Petra's relief, the cobblestone shattered beneath the force of the enchanted pick, stone splintering off. Ignoring her shoulder's complaints, Petra raised the pickaxe again and slammed it back into the wall, repeating her process until enough of the barrier was broken away from her to get through.
Bright light was shining through the hole, blinding in contrast the pitch blackness of everything else.
Raising Miss Butter, Petra quickly fended off the few approaching zombies that Rascal had not been able to keep at bay. Now that she knew how to more easily make quick work of them, the last of Petra's fears were washing away.
Rascal growled as he protectively circled her, keeping his ears pulled back and his teeth bared.
"Come on boy." Petra said, darting back to the hole.
Seeing what his owner was about to do, Rascal immediately got in between Petra and the hole. He stood his ground, his ears pulled back. And then he whined.
"I know, boy, it's dangerous." Petra said as she knelt in front of him, placing a hand on his coat. "But I'll be okay."
Rascal whined again, giving Petra's face a small lick. She leaned forward, planting a kiss on the wolf's forehead. A type of affection Petra only ever showed him when they were alone.
Rascal reluctantly looked back at the mob filled room as Petra clambered through the hole. But then he turned around and jumped through after her.
Petra shielded her eyes were with hands, the extremely bright light feeling somewhat equivalent to what she imagined a saw in her brain would feel. Trying her hardest not to look directly in front of her, Petra walked forward into the light. It was almost like stepping into a bubble of light, said bubble's inside being much less harsh on her eyes.
Finally able to see again, Petra blinked a few times to clear her vision. The moment she opened her eyes, they slowly grew wider.
Rascal whined anxiously as Petra took a step towards the object in front of them, beginning to reach out a hand to touch it. Her mouth opened, but it took a second for the words to come out.
"The Command Block."
