Chapter 13 - Revenge?
Ya'll might wanna reread the last chapter again to get back into the flow of things- sorry for the long break, explanation in the A/N at the end of the chapter!
___
- Back on the day of the fight -
"It worked." Maya said in disbelief as the three members of the Order disappeared into the trees, running away. "They're actually running."
"I knew they were cowards all along." Aiden growled beneath his breath.
He began walking up to the dead wolf body on the ground, looking down at the animal. His plan had been to break Jesse, starting with taking out one of her friends. While it didn't quite succeed, seeing the strong warrior crumble in front of his eyes had been satisfying enough – he could go for Jesse another day.
Reaching down, Aiden grabbed a hold of the arrow lodged in the wolf's chest, pulling it out. Droplets of blood dripped onto the wolf's silvery grey coat, staining his fur.
While Aiden wouldn't like to admit it, he was rather impressed by the animal who had come out of literally nowhere and threw itself in front of Petra at the last second.
"What do we do now that the Order knows we're here?" Gill asked as he and Maya came walking up behind Aiden.
"They weren't really part of the plan." Maya added.
"Oh, I was planning on making them a part of it." Aiden said as he turned away from the wolf, beginning to walk into the trees. "I just had to find them first."
Maya and Gill exchanged glances, before beginning to jog after him.
"I didn't realise you still wanted to get your revenge?" Maya said as she and Gill caught up.
"Oh, I've always wanted to get my revenge." Aiden said as he stopped, opening a hatch in the ground that lead down to an underground base. "I just wanted to find the right way to do it. The way that would... hurt the most."
"I don't get it-" Gill began, earning an elbow to the ribs from Maya.
"The Command Block." Aidan said as they climbed down the ladder, into the base. "If used right, it can inflict all kinds of pain."
"But if you want to wield its power in that kind of way, it would take years to practise!" Maya said, following Aiden deeper into the underground structure.
"Not if somebody else already lay the tracks for me." Aiden said with a sly smirk, unlocking and opening a door to reveal the command block. "If the information I've been able to uncover is correct, then Jesse's friend has already been under the influence of the command block's power. That's a stepping stone for me."
Maya and Gill exchanged glances, shrugging at each other.
"There is one thing I need, however." Aiden said, stroking his hand across the command block. He looked back, facing Maya. "The command block has the ability to alter life, yes?"
"You put it very loosely." Maya responded. "The Command Block has the ability to bring a person or animal back, provided it's used within the next moments after death." She gestured with her hands as she explained. "I believe the correct term for it is respawning. There are worlds that uses this ability to trap people as slaves for eternity, I believe. I once read-"
"I'm not interested in hearing the history of it, Maya." Aiden grumbled. "I want to be able to use it."
"On who?" Maya and Gill asked in confusion, exchanging glances.
"I need bait." Aiden said, resting one hand on the command block. "Leverage."
"We already have that, don't we?" Gill asked in confusion.
"Yes, but not that I can use it yet without putting a crack in our plan." Aiden grumbled, rolling his eyes at Gill. "I need something I can use against the order now."
"The wolf." Maya breathed, glancing back over her shoulder.
"Always knew you were smarter one." Aiden said, turning around. "Now prove to me that your redstone training we fought so hard to get, has paid off.
Revive the wolf."
-------------------------
It's been days since the Order's run in with Aiden. Every day since has been horrible in some way. All of them were tense and stressed out, knowing there was a possibility that Aiden could find their location at any time. And it was pretty much impossible to avoid how... lifeless the tree-house felt, with one less heart beating in it.
Another long day of training and planning had come to an end. The Order were all sitting at their dining table, having dinner. It was quiet, the usual cheeriness in the atmosphere having completely died.
Jesse was really just pushing her food around in her plate, her appetite pretty much non-existent at that moment. She glanced slightly up from her food at her friends, noticing that one other person wasn't really touching her food either.
Petra hadn't gotten any better, if anything she's just been getting worse. She became more distant, spending any time that they weren't training, discussing strategies or eating, in her bedroom. It honestly hurt Jesse to watch her friend slowly revert. Back into the person she used to be before the five of them became a team... distant and with her walls up.
Jesse has several times offered Petra her support, but the warrior didn't even want her comfort at that point. She pushed anybody off who tried to sympathize with her.
It was starting to worry Jesse, unable to push down the horrible thought of whether Petra would ever be able to walk back up this road she had went down.
That day she had noticed more than one fault in Petra's fighting. Her friend seemingly getting distracted every time she was meant to concentrate. She honestly looked worn through, which made Jesse question whether she was sleeping at all during the night.
Pulling her gaze away from her friend with a soft sigh, Jesse reluctantly began to eat the food on her plate. It remained silent around the table, Lukas, Olivia and Axel every now and then briefly trying to start a conversation, only for it to die away again. When they finished everybody cleaned up in silence, getting ready to call it a day.
Jesse checked her watch as she began walking down the hallway, for a second not looking in front of her. When she looked back up, she found herself centimetres away from crashing into Petra who was just about to enter her own room. Both girls gasped slightly, jumping back from each other to avoid the collision.
"Sorry!" Jesse said quickly. "My fault, I wasn't looking."
A brief smile flickered onto Petra's face as she shrugged. "It's fine."
She turned back to her door, getting ready to step inside the room. Something snapped inside Jesse at the last second, and she found herself grabbing Petra by the arm before she could close her door again. Petra raised her eyebrows at Jesse questioningly.
"Sorry, I know it's late and we're all tired..." Jesse said, lowering her voice slightly so she didn't catch the attention of any of the others. "But I was wondering if I could talk to you?"
Petra was silent for a few seconds, before she just shook her head, beginning to turn away again. Frustration glimmered in her eyes when Jesse didn't let go of her wrist.
"Please." She said softly. "Less than ten minutes, I promise."
Petra hesitated, looking between her room and Jesse. The she let out a groan, giving in. "Fine."
Jesse nodded in her own room's direction, gesturing for Petra to follow her so they weren't talking out in the hallway. A heavy sigh left Petra's mouth, before she followed after Jesse.
"So what is this about?" She asked gruffly as they stepped into the room, fixing her gaze outside the window.
"You've barely spoken two words to me in the past few days." Jesse said softly. "I just want to know your okay."
"I'm fine."
"You're not fine, Petra, everybody can see that." Jesse said, resting a hand on her friend's shoulder.
Petra gritted her teeth, not looking at Jesse. Her fingers twitched slightly, before she slowly balled her hands into tight fists at her sides.
"It's just me, you know." Jesse said softly. "You know you can tell me anything."
"I don't... want to talk about this." Petra said, pulling away from Jesse and taking a seat on the edge of her bed. "I don't want anybody telling me-"
"I'm not here to tell you anything." Jesse cut Petra off gently, taking a seat beside her. "But I know, from experience, all these emotions can't stay bottle up forever. And sometimes... you just need somebody to listen while you get it all out."
Petra didn't say anything, her fingers beginning to fiddle with a loose thread from one of the rips in her jeans. A string of red hair had found it's way out of her short ponytail, dangling in her eyes.
"You're my best friend, Petra." Jesse said softly. "I don't like seeing you this way everyday while knowing... I'm doing nothing to help."
Still, Petra didn't say a word. Her gaze had grown hard and cold, hostility being her only way to push down the emotions she didn't want to show.
"I'm sorry." Jesse finally said with a sigh, letting her head droop. "I didn't mean to just make this harder on you, I was just... hoping I could help."
"Why?" Petra suddenly asked, lifting her head and looking over at Jesse. "You said it yourself, I've just been pushing you, all of you, away. Rejecting your help."
"Because I know why your doing it." Jesse said softly, looking up at Petra again. "I know what you're going through, I understand what you're feeling. You're pushing us away because your in pain. It's your way to numb your heartbreak."
Petra looked down again at Jesse's words, beginning to chew on the inside of her lip. Not knowing if there was any other words she could say, Jesse just wrapped one of her arms behind Petra's back, giving her friend a gentle hug.
"Nothings the same." Petra finally said, her voice just a whisper. "Everything I see, everything I do reminds me of him. Reminds me of the fact that he isn't here and never will be again."
She looked down at the two bandanna's wrapped around her wrist, gnawing harder on her lip to force back the tears.
"I haven't properly slept in days, because I'm so used to having him on that bed with me. I feel absolutely terrible, but the last thing I want is everybody's attention on me so I just hide it..."
Petra's voice trailed off and she reached up, furiously wiping her eyes on the back of her hand before the tears could break through. Jesse sub-consciously tightened her grip around Petra, in a reassuring matter.
Already, she felt awful. Petra's been training alongside the rest of them, hard, while she's barely been resting. No wonder it was becoming harder for her to cope with her grief.
"It's just that, whenever I tell myself that things will be okay..." One of the tears finally found their way down Petra's face, trickling across her cheek and dripping onto her arm. "...I know it's just a lie, because things will never be the same without him."
Petra gulped back a sob, more tears breaking through. She let her hands drop into her lap, not even trying to wipe them away any more. Leaning her head against Petra's shoulder, Jesse tried to rub her back in a comforting matter. She knew nothing she say at that moment would make Petra feel better.
"All I can think about-" Petra said, her voice trembling madly. "-Is that I want Aiden dead."
Jesse's mouth began opening, wanting to tell Petra that revenge wasn't the solution. But after all the pain she's seen her friend go through, and knowing the young wolf would never be running through their tree-house or chasing ocelots again – the words that came out of her mouth were the complete opposite.
"We're going to make him pay, no matter what."
Petra glanced up again, looking over at Jesse with tear filled eyes. "You-?" She began softly.
"Petra, Aiden was aiming to kill you, just for the sake of getting to me." Jesse said, grasping Petra's hand in hers. "If it weren't for Rascal-" She gulped, it being the first time saying the wolf's name since his death. "If it weren't for Rascal, then I would have lost my best friend, hands down one of the most importantly people in my life. And now I'm seeing you go through this pain, with my hands completely tied and unable to help you.
After what Aiden did to us, after what he did to Sky City... I think that man is out of second chances."
It was silent for a few seconds between the two girls. Then, much to Jesse's surprise, Petra all of a sudden leaned over and tightly embraced her. She hugged her friend back tightly, hearing Petra whimper out a barely inaudible thank you.
"We're going to avenge Rascal." Jesse said as they pulled away, resting her hands on Petra's shoulders. "I promise."
Petra nodded, managing a small, sad smile through her tears.
They turned their heads upon hearing a soft, gently grunt beside them. Lluna was watching them with her head cocked to the side, blue eyes filled with curiosity. Seeming to sense that the girl closest to her was upset, she stretched her neck out and gave Petra's hand a gentle nudge with her snout.
Petra slowly raised her hand, tentatively stroking Lluna's head. The llama closed her eyes in pleasure, enjoying the affection.
"I really miss him." Petra whispered under her breath, her gaze still resting on Lluna.
"I know." Jesse said softly, resting a hand on Petra's back. "I know."
Lluna blinked her eyes open again, letting out another soft grunt. Then she placed her front hooves on the bed, promptly heaving herself onto the mattress. Petra glanced back at Jesse in confusion.
"Lluna always does that when I'm unhappy." Jesse explained, a small smile forming on her face. "I guess she knows something's upsetting you."
Petra turned her attention back to Lluna, leaning herself down on one elbow so she could continue stroking the llama. It made Jesse feel a bit better, seeing that the llama's presence was helping Petra. Even if it was just a little bit.
"Rascal always used to know when something was wrong too." Petra said softly, smiling sadly as she continued to stroke Lluna. A single tear began trickling down the side of her face. "Remember back when Soren sabotaged the wooden bridge?"
"Can't forget it." Jesse admitted, laying down on her back beside Petra and Lluna.
"He was my only comfort in that time." Petra whispered softly. "After nearly the entire Order turned against me..." She sniffed, reaching up to wipe her eyes. "...He was the only one who didn't look at me with some form of anger in his eyes."
Jesse bit her lip slightly, feeling a lump forming in her own throat at Petra's words. Her heart was breaking at the grief she heard in her friend's voice.
She heard Petra force back another coming sob, burying her face into Lluna's soft white fur. The llama grunted softly, giving Petra a gentle nudge with her snout.
Feeling the familiar prick of tears in her eyes, Jesse blinked a few times before closing her eyes. A part of her didn't feel like she could even relate to Petra's pain at that point. Opening up to others was a whole battle on its own for Petra, where Jesse had effortlessly allowed her friends to offer their support and comfort. And even though she never admitted it, the only person in that group who Petra really truly trusted, was Jesse. She's only ever shown the side of her that she hid from the rest of the world, around Jesse and of course Rascal.
Now she had one less to trust.
"Petra." Jesse whispered softly, turning her head in the direction of her friend. She began opening her mouth to speak, only to fall silent.
Petra's eyes had closed. Her shallow breaths had deepened. Fingers still knotted into Lluna's fur.
A small smile found it's place on Jesse's face, feeling a small bit of happiness blossom inside her, knowing that Petra was finally getting a wink of sleep.
Thank you Lluna. Jesse silently thought to herself.
--------------------
Petra's eyes slowly opened, finding herself staring at an unfamiliar room. For a few seconds she was confused, not knowing where she was or how she got there. Her chest hurt from crying, her eyes feeling swollen and her throat the equivalent to sandpaper.
She lifted her head off the mattress, blinking sleepily a few times. Lying against her, was the large shape of Lluna. The llama fast asleep, her ears slightly twitching in her dreams. Petra's fingers were loosely slipped into her white fur.
Right, she was in Jesse's room. Had she actually fallen asleep?
Petra pushed herself properly up on her elbow, looking around. Sure enough, Jesse herself was asleep on the other side of the bed. She also didn't look like she had planned to fall asleep there, lying on her back with her hands folded together and resting on her stomach.
A small smile formed on Petra's face, already feeling a lot better. Having been able to speak to Jesse about how she felt, was like having a large weight lifted off her shoulders. Not to even mention the tiny bit of sleep she had gotten.
Petra didn't feel like heading back to her own room, leaning her head back onto the mattress. All she wanted to do was go back to sleep there, where she could hold Lluna and silently pretend it was Rascal.
Aiden was standing in front of the command block, a maniac grin playing on his lips. Days of digging as deep as he could into the information he had, was finally paying off. Finally he could use to his advantage. Finally he could inflict more pain.
Petra blinked her eyes open again, the dryness in her throat bothering her too much to go back to sleep. She wasn't going to drift off again if she didn't go and get a drink of water first.
She carefully got up from the bed, while being super careful to not wake Jesse or Lluna. Neither of them stirred at her movement.
Aiden lay his hand on the command block, stroking across the precious machine. He might not have the experience to use the command block in the way he wished, he might not be able to reverse the spell that would slowly devour a person's humanity...
But with the press of a button, he could still do the next best thing.
Careful to not step on a plank that would creak, Petra crept out of the room. She slowly walked down the hallway in the direction of the kitchen.
Taking a deep breath to relish in the moment, Aiden pressed down on the button.
Right as Petra step foot into the kitchen, pain all of a sudden seared up her arm from her wrist. She staggered forward, trying to withhold a cry of pain as she doubled over, hugging her hand to her chest.
Dizziness crashed over Petra like a wave as she stumbled forward, sinking to her knees. Short gasps were leaving her mouth as sweat dripped down her face. Her hand was throbbing violently, feeling like somebody had impaled a knife into her wrist. She felt like she was going to be sick.
A few moments and deep breaths later, Petra managed to push through the worst of dizziness. She raised her hand slightly, the moonlight shining through the window and providing just enough light for Petra to see something that made her blood run cold.

So do I address the chapter first or the fact that I'm back after TWO FREAKING MONTHS?
Feels too weird to continue this A/N the way I normally would so let's get this out of the way - I'm sorry for disappearing. I regret taking a break this long and I'm angry at myself about it. The story was at such a suspenseful point and so many readers probably lost complete interest in it, all because somebody wasn't 100% satisfied with her past writing and then didn't have the motivation to rewrite it.
November and December were two REALLY stressful months for me, I had just finished some really tough exams and was then swamped with work and deadlines. Whenever I had free time I was just mentally too tired to write, so I was really just doing stress-relieving art.
Things really just settled after New Year, and I've been relishing in how good it feels to have time to breathe again. I still don't really have any motivation to write anything, but I just need to recharge (Thankfully from here on out it should just be editing for NOTM)
So yeah, I'm sorry, I'm really really sorry. I felt like I needed a break from Wattpad to focus on other things, but I also really hate the fact that this book stood still for two entire months.
I hope there are some of you here who's either still in the flow of the story, or maybe reread a few chapters to get back into it.
Okay, enough of that, otherwise I'm just going to be repeating myself. Looking at the chapter here- Oml a lot happened
And even after all this time, the cliffhanger queen has yet to meet her end!
I know it's been a long time, but I'd actually love to hear your theories after all these new developments- What is Aiden up to, what were he talking about? And more importantly, what did he do to Petra?
I'm back on a five day schedule so I'll see you guys in five days with Chapter 14!
