Chapter 6

A figure flew into the room and landed on both feet. The Night Dragon stood up, her poker face still there. Brian made a sound between a whimper, and a gasp. How he did it, Jason had no idea.

"A tracking device," she said, "clever, but I found it quickly. Your friend is a good hacker."

"Why are you here?" Jason questioned.

"To warn you," she replied, "he knows that I've been in contact with you."

"Wait, wait, wait," Brian held his hands up, "who's he?"

"The villain," Jason explained, "he killed the Night Dragon's mentor."

"The Night Dragon?" she said slowly, "that's the name you came up with?"

"Yes," Brian whispered.

"Ok," Night Dragon said monotonously, "anyways just watch your back. I won't always be there, I can't teleport."

"Sure seems like it," Brian muttered, observing her outfit.

"Don't ask to know my identity," Night Dragon narrowed her eyes.

"Darn," Brian said quietly, so she wouldn't hear.

"Watch your backs," she warned, "you never know when- oh no."

"What?" Jason pressed.

"Fire," she widened her brown eyes, "23rd and Madison."

"Isn't that your apartment building?" Brian turned to him.

"How did you know this?" Jason panicked, "this can't be true!"

"Police com."

"I have to get there!" Jason shouted, "please!"

"Come with me," Night Dragon reached out her black gloved hand, "if you want to get there."

Jason nodded, grabbing her hand. She walked over to the window and pulled him close to her. In a flash, she takes out a grappling hook, and fires it high into the black night sky. The wire tightens, yanking Jason and her out the window.

He felt the urge to scream and struggle, they were so high off the ground. Through some instinct he just looked up, watching her fire again and again. Each shot hit a building or pole with precision. Smoke rose off a building, rising into the black night sky.

Tears formed in his eyes, as Jason realized it was his apartment. The vigilante stopped on the building next to it. She let Jason go, standing on the edge of the building.

"Take me with you!" Jason said, running over to her, "I need to make sure my family is okay!"

"I can't put you in danger like that," Night Dragon reloaded her grapple.

"It wasn't a question," Jason found himself trying to command the vigilante.

"You sound like-" she shook her head, "never mind. Grab on."

She shot the hook into the red burning window. Night Dragon took her cape and took it off. Her hood still was hung over her head. Jason hugged her close, blinking the tears out of his eyes. His head whiplashed as the wire pulled him closer to the fire.

Smoke surrounded him as he entered his bedroom. The vigilante seemed to know where it was. He grabbed his notebook off his burning desk. In it was all his dreams, flashbacks, and occurrences. Jason was very attached to it, for a reason he did not know.

He had only read it once, Jason did not remember most of it. Quickly, he pushed open his bedroom door, running through the living room. Everything was on fire, or buried under rubble.

"Mom!" Jason screamed, "Dad! You in here?!"

"Jason!" He heard his Mom cough, "we're in the bedroom!"

He rushed over to their bedroom door, kicking a fallen plank out of the way. His heart pounded in his head, causing him to clench with fear. Smoke burned his eyes, but the tears blocked most of it. Jason tried opening to door, but it wouldn't push. He groaned, pushing with all of his might.

"It won't budge!" Jason shouted, "what's blocking it?!"

"Rubble," his Mom explained, panic clear in her voice, "I don't know if anything can get past it Jason."

"No!" Jason shook his head, shoving against the door, "I'm not leaving you in there! Please, there has to be a way out!"

"The window and door is blocked, son," Dad croaked, "you need to get out of here."

"The vigilante can get you out!" Jason protested, "let her help!"

"No, Jason," Dad said, "don't let a murderer save us, you need to get out of here!"

"You think I'm leaving you!?" Jason cried, "no way! I-I can't lose you guys! I love you too much!"

"We love you too," Mom assured, "that's why you need to leave."

Jason shut his eyes, tears streaming down his face. He sat against the door, putting his soot covered hands over his eyes. The crackling of fire and whistling of fire alarms filled his senses. He didn't care if a burning plank fell on top of him, Jason didn't care.

A moment of clarity struck him as he realized he was sitting in a burning building. The vigilante ran through the door, carrying a girl in her arms. She walked over to the open window and looked at Jason. Tears kept streaming down his face, he had to keep shutting his eyes to get the smoke out.

"We need to go Jason," Night Dragon said, "hurry!"

"My parents are still in there!" Jason said, more ceiling falling next to him, "rubble is blocking the door."

"We need to go," she shook her head, "there's no time. Any minute now this building will collapse!"

Jason sprinted to the window, taking one last look at the door. Grief filled his mind as burning planks fell in front of the door. A throbbing hole seemed to open up in the middle of his heart. His parents were gone, and he wasn't strong enough to save them.

Night Dragon grabbed Jason as she grappled towards the ground. She slid down the wire, holding Jason and the young girl in each arm. He turned his head back to the burning building. The fire receded for a minute, then exploded.

Sound filled his ears of a startling boom. Red, orange, and white curled outwards as the top of the building blew up. Everything blurred due to the tears filling his eyes. Jason closed his eyes, too heartbroken to watch.

He only wished he hadn't gotten into this.
