Chapter 27

Above is Derrick Payne. I chose Cody Christian because he looks the most like him and is around the same age. (The green eyes and white streak were my doing). Enjoy the (slightly LGBT+) chapter. Don't like, don't read.
------------------------------------

Brian nearly passed out when he looked in the mirror.
Night had taken him to their main base, which was on the south side of town. She didn't say a word to him, Duskfall explained the plan. He was shoved into a room with weapons and gadgets strewn across tables, a glass case with another Black Skull armor on a mannequin.
First off, Jason's armor was awesome, so it would look cool on anyone. Second, he looked almost exactly like Jason. With the mask over his eyes and raven hair spiked like his friend's, he almost called out his reflection for being Jason. Brian could sense almost everything in the room because his reflexes picked up everything. He noticed the three escape points in this room, how to get through them, and which one he could fight his way out. It was half terrifying, half prodigious.
Brian also knew the best way to fight someone with every weapon, how to fire a gun, and dozens of espionage skills. Out of curiously he picked up three throwing stars from the table. When he threw one it embedded directly where he wanted it to.
"Well this is awesome," Brian stared at his hands incredulously.
The door opened, a fully armored Duskfall walking in. He noted that Derrick tended to have his metal wings out at all times, it looked seriously terrifying. One would think angelic metal wings were like rainbows and unicorns, but when feathers are sharpened like blades, it's intimidating.
  "Jason?" Duskfall asked carefully.
"Brian," he grinned, "ready to go, Batman?"
"Catch," Duskfall threw something at him.
Brian's new instincts took over and his hand snatched the speeding object. It was a circular metal chip about the size of a coin. Voice changer, a weird impulse told him, put it on your collarbone under the armor.
Hesitantly he placed the circle right above his collarbone and put the armor over it. Duskfall nodded then walked out of the room without a word.
"He's so Batman," Brian muttered, grinning madly. He stood in front of the mirror and turned on his voice changer. "Do I sound like- OH GOSH. Bwahahahaha..."
The door literally broke down, the thick metal clattering against the ground. Derrick flew through, dual pistols drawn. Brian simply raised his eyebrows, turning off the changer.
"What did that door do to you?" Brian whimpered.
"I thought you were in danger."
"I was trying out this voice changer, it's weird."
  "Do not laugh like that."
  "Yes, lord of solemnness."
Duskfall landed on the ground, a loud slam echoing on the metal floors. Derrick's visor peeled away, and the teen nonchalantly examined the table weapons. Brian drew Jason's scythe and tried attacking with it. While he knew every move with the weapon, he was still slightly shorter then Jason. The scythe felt unnatural in his hands. Brian placed the scythe down on the table, Derrick's gaze didn't even falter from the sword he was examining.
"Do you know the plan?" Derrick asked, his wings tucking in. The handsome teen still wasn't making eye contact with Brian.
  "No," Brian frowned.
"We will go see Adrian," Derrick suddenly looked surprised a jut what he said, "I mean...Vortex, inside a metahuman prison in Taropolis."
  "Metahuman prison?" Brian pondered.
"The leftover radiation from Raden City spreading in Taropolis affects people in different ways. Mutation, sickness, and sometimes powers. Usually their powers kill them within a week."
"Why isn't the government all over this?"
"Ha," Duskfall laughed dryly, "the political parties and governmental problems make it so easy decisions take months, sometimes years, even if people's lives are in the balance."
"I guess that's true," Brian huffed, "so they'll just let you in?"
"It isn't Eximius City, almost all the officials there listen to me," Derrick still didn't look at him, "I drop off meta criminals there almost every day. They might question you a little, I'm still figuring out how we'll prove you're  Jason."
"This is when I wish I had shadow powers."
"Back when we worked together Jason did not have control over his abilities, so he would not have used them regardless."
"I could throw a shuriken," Brian joked.
"If they doubt you I will persuade them. Your voice modulator is very convincing so you should be fine."
"Never thought I'd go to Arkham Asylum," Brian grinned.
"Would you stop that," the corner of Derrick's mouth twitched. Brian noticed Derrick did that when he was annoyed.
  "What'd I do?" Brian asked.
"Never mind," Derrick made his way towards the now doorless exit, they still haven't made eye contact, "meet me in the main area, fifteen minutes."
The brunette stepped over the fallen metal door, disappearing into the dark corridor. Brian may not be a telepath like Vexen, but he knew something was distressing Derrick. He was impressed in Derrick's near bionic method of thinking, it was brutally effective, but not exactly for human communication. The teen was a genius, but the world may never figure that out.
Brian took Jason's dual mini scythes, they were called kama or something. They fit his height better, plus Brian was fairly coordinated with both hands. This is when he's glad he's done football all through high school. For years the other jocks always tried to pull them into their group. Brian played along for a few months, but knew these jocks weren't the smartest of people. While some got good grades, Brian spent his free time hacking and reading superhero comics, they had nothing in common.
The football players were always hooking up with cheerleaders, and Brian knew he didn't want that. When quiet Jason showed up, he knew they would be friends. Not even two years after knowing the brown haired teenager, he turned out to be a raven haired, amnesiac ex-crimefighter.
Now here he was, posing as his killer vigilante best friend.
Suddenly he wasn't so sure he could do this. What if he was caught? What if he was arrested? What if he was executed? This crime fighting thing really didn't sound very appealing now. After about five minutes of contemplating, Brian forced himself to meet Derrick in the main hall.
"Ready?" Derrick again had the visor over his face, the metallic twang creepifying his voice.
Was creepifying even a word? Meh, Brian was going to use it anyways. Take that mandatory four years of high school English.
"As I'll ever be," Brian turned on the voice modulator, "does this sound convincing?"
His voice sounded more mature, deeper, darker, and had a gravely tone to it. Brian could see why criminals feared Black Skull. Y'know...plus the whole 'death' thing.
"You sound and look just like Black Skull," Derrick replied evenly, "it will be hard for people to distinguish you from Jason. Unless it is the Commissioner at Grekh Prison, we should be fine."
"Why does it sound like a prison for spitting?"
"Gr-eeh-hkk," Derrick rolled the 'k' like it was German.
  "Is it German or Russian?"
  "Russian."
  "And it means?"
Duskfall turned towards him, "sin. This prison is for those who have purposely caused wrongdoing and willingly sinned. Let's go."

-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-•-

There was a hanger in the prison that they landed in. Well, Duskfall flew in; he'd walked into the hanger. Brian could've taken a plane to Taropolis, but he wasn't eighteen yet, he couldn't buy a ticket alone. Derrick could've bought him one, but that news would have spread like wildfire with the Payne surname. He didn't think he would talk about flying with Duskfall until...after he was dead. Derrick broke the sound barrier after three minutes. He knew that Derrick's suit protected the teen from dying because of g-forces. If Derrick couldn't control molecules down to the atom, he would have died. It must have taken an enormous amount of power because Derrick didn't say a word the entire three thousand mile journey. The trip took four or five hours, Brian was passed out for most of it.
When Derrick landed one hundred feet from the prison, he collapsed. Brian thought Derrick was dead for a while because he slept for sixteen hours. During that time Brian hid them under the biggest tree he'd ever seen, he then deactivated Derrick's visor. He mostly slept while Derrick was out cold, and he practiced acting as Jason. Brian set responses to questions that he thought Jason would say. Once he heard a sigh coming from Derrick's direction he shot up.
"Der-Duskfall," Brian corrected himself, no names in the field, "are you okay?"
"Jason?" Derrick groaned, eyes squeezed shut.
He almost didn't reply for a moment, because this Derrick actually sounded like a teenager.
"It's Brian," he said softly, "remember?"
"It's coming back to me," Derrick sounded so human, it was strange, "give me a minute."
Brian nodded and looked over at the setting sun. Derrick had slept through the whole day, unable to wake up. He heard a mechanical whir, and then Derrick's visor was back on. Duskfall's wings shook out the decaying autumn leaves.
"I'm going to fly into the hanger," Duskfall explained, now back to monotone, "you try your best to walk out of the shadows."
"Roger," he made sure his voice modifier was on.
With that Derrick soared up in a whirlwind, Brian's hair responded negatively to the wind. He walked towards the clearing where the isolated prison was located. They appeared to be in a forest, most likely in Washington or Oregon. He found a very dark area and hid in it. When a familiar metallic figure glided into the hanger, he walked out if the shadows. Brian had the scythe diagonally across his back just for show. He strode with confidence and power, like he knew Jason did. Surprisingly no frantic spotlight was shone on his face. Duskfall was already conversing with two guards in uniforms.
"What brings you here, sir?" The first guard asked.
"Cell 138," Duskfall replied, his tone not one bit emotional, "I need to talk to the inmate."
"Well," Brian cut in, stepping out of the shadows, "we need to."
"No way," the second guard breathed.
"You?" The first guard sounded strangled.
"Me," Brian nodded like Jason tended to, short and purposeful.
"Is this the real deal?" Guard two asked Duskfall.
"Yes," Duskfall looked down at the guard who then winced.
An eighteen year old is intimidating these grown men without even saying full sentences, Brian thought, this is freaking epic.
"Go ahead," the first guard opened the thick door, "welcome back, Black Skull."
Brian felt Jason wouldn't say anything so he walked straight through the door behind Derrick. He wavered carefully around Duskfall's flowing metal wings, those things could slice your throat with relative ease. He caught up to Derrick's right side.
"So?" Brian smirked a 'Black Skull' smirk.
"You fooled me," Derrick replied through the com-set. From anyone else's point of view, it would appear as if Duskfall did not say anything, "this is it."
Derrick stopped in front of a completely blank door, no window or food slot. It suddenly appeared painful for Duskfall to move, because he clenched up.
"Before we go in I should tell you about Vortex," Duskfall said in the frequency, almost in a whisper. "I can never manage to interrogate him. You will most likely have to take over for me. There are no cameras in this room, so do not worry about keeping up your act. Vortex can sense changes down to the molecule, and he is smarter then anyone on the planet. He will know any emotional change you have, your worse fears and regrets. Be prepared for the worst."
Brian nodded and opened the door for Derrick. He let the taller teen in first then shut the door. In the cell, there was a glass wall separating them from the villain inside. A figure was sitting in a folding chair at a square, white table, rapping his fingers on the plastic. Brian recognized the tapping as Morse Code, but it was far too fast to decode. The teen had shaggy black hair, electric blue streaming down his fringe. Vortex had electric blue eyes as well. Honestly Brian felt Vortex resembled a normal Californian, but in crazy good shape with a creepy smile. The weird electric eye shade thing was similar to Derrick's. Brian bet the two teens got their powers from the same explosion.
  "Vortex," Brian broke the silence.
"Jason?" Vortex looked confused then started cackling creepily, "good to see you not dead and all that! I must say I wasn't expecting you," Vortex pointed to Derrick, "him maybe, but not you. Old Duskfall couldn't face me on his own?"
"Don't make this harder then it should be," Derrick was struggling to keep a steady tone.
"Hypothalamus is active," Vortex noted, his eyes now closed, "increased heart rate and blood pressure. You're scared. Must really crush you to see me like this, huh? You used to be so much more fun, what happened to that person?"
"Adrian, we don't have time for this," Brian narrowed his eyes.
"Okay, you're definitely Parker. For a minute I'd thought the cute billionaire had been replaced. You haven't lost your jawline, Skull, damn."
"Who has been using Toxin's formulas?" Duskfall seemed furious now.
"Didn't you kill him?" Vortex gave the creepiest smile ever, "broke your Batman moral code?"
"Yes," Derrick hissed, "answer the question."
"Huh," Vortex leaned back in the folding chair, "you still thinking that?"
"What?" Derrick's voice was like the calm before a storm.
"My transition to the right side," Vortex cackled, "you still think I have good left in me! Best part is, you're chasing false hopes. You're so scared of losing another partner you bury all your feeling,
even when you know you're falling in love again."
"Shut up," Duskfall said through clenched teeth. Even though Brian knew Derrick wasn't talking to him, he still felt the threat nearly paralyze him with fear.
"Don't get feisty now," Vortex smirked.
"Duskfall," Brian said under his breath so only the hero would hear him, "are we allowed to go through the glass?"
"Button on your right," Derrick said through the comms.
"Will he be able to attack?"
"His water bending powers are deactivated and his cuffs don't allow him to move past the glass."
Brian punched the panel on the concrete wall and the thick glass slid into the floor. Vortex raised a cocky eyebrow but didn't say a word. He knew all of Jason's interrogation skills, and he planned to use them. Brian grabbed Vortex by his collar and slammed the teen into the wall.
"Answer the question," Brian narrowed his masked eyes. "Who is using Toxin's formulas?"
"Ha," Vortex leaned forwards, "you think I'll tell you, Parker?"
"I'm not having a good day," Brian kept his voice dark, "I suggest you tell me before I break Mr. Morals rules."
"Aw," Vortex looked towards Duskfall, "that's real sentimental sweetheart, telling Jason not to hurt me."
"What are you doing Brian?" Derrick asked through the comms so Vortex wouldn't hear.
"Losing. My. Patience." Brian hissed.
"You still with Night?" Vortex tilted his head.
"Last warning-"
"It's a shame," Vortex gave another insane smile.
Brian somehow managed to not cringe when he punched Vortex. He also noted that the suit added an immense amount of strength to his movements. Vortex simply spit off to the side then looked back at him.
"That it?" Vortex teased darkly.
"No," Derrick spoke up, "Skull step back."
Brian immediately let go of Vortex then took three steps back. He felt fear himself when Duskfall walked up to Vortex and sickeningly threw him into the concrete. The winged hero held up a metal clawed hand to Vortex's neck, holding the teen against the wall. Suddenly Vortex's eyes widened and he screeched in pain. Brian didn't see Derrick even hurting the former hero physically, but Adrian was still screaming.
"Stop!" Brian shouted, "you're killing him!"
  "Not even close," Derrick grumbled.
  "Derrick!" Vortex gasped through pain.
Brian saw Duskfall's head flinch away, this obviously hurt him just as much. Derrick's visor mechanically folded into his armor, exposing the teen's face. He dropped his hand and Vortex slid to the ground, breathing heavily.
"Adrian," Derrick sounded heartbroken, "please just tell us."
Vortex looked up at Derrick, "no."
"What do you want from me?!" Derrick punched the wall, leaving an indent in the solid concrete.
"For you to admit something," Adrian smirked.
"What?" Derrick breathed, face contorted in pain.
"What hurts more," Vortex narrowed his eyes, "seeing me like this, or knowing this is all your fault?"
"This," Derrick choked, "is not my fault."
"This never would have happened if you had just gotten to me in time," Vortex laughed darkly, "I wouldn't want to kill you here and now."
"Please," Derrick's eyes pressed shut, "this is worse then death Adrian."
Vortex had a murderous gleam in his eyes, a creepy smile splayed across his lips. The hero was completely and utterly insane. Brian knew that Derrick was crushed to see Adrian like this. He had a feeling that Derrick hadn't come to see Vortex after his...transformation.
"One more thing then I'll answer your question," Vortex said. "Did you ever even love him?"
"Who?" Derrick's voice was in a strained plea.
  "Adrian."
  "You?"
"I am not him anymore," Vortex maliciously smirked. "So?"
Brian couldn't tell if Derrick was crying or not, the hero's face was so pained.
  "Yes," Derrick gasped.
Suddenly Derrick's visor and cowl folded back around his head. Duskfall spun around and swiftly moved over to the door, not looking at Brian or Vortex.
"That blonde chick," Vortex sounded amused, "she's been salvaging all of Toxin's experiments, shipping them in by boat. I heard newcomers talking about it, Johansen has been hiring assassins and mercenaries to get ahold of the formulas. Gray Claw, Blackout, Viper, any villain that'll get the job done. Not sure what she wants the poisons for, but it sure isn't for the greater good. Sounds great."
"Ever heard of Psihcra?" Brian asked.
  "Sicara?"
  "Ps-eye-cra."
"Nope," Vortex grinned, "she kill your girlfriend or something?"
  "Or something."
"Hm," Vortex's eyes started glowing, "you're almost as afraid as sap over there."
He wasn't wrong, Brian was terrified of someone figuring out his charade.
"Worried that you'll never be accepted," Vortex laughed, "how original. You were never one for being shy, Parker."
  "Things change."
  "You're telling me."
Vortex might sound like a normal teenager if he wasn't totally deranged. Everything he said was either creepy or easing. Brian wondered how Vortex was before he went crazy.
  "Goodbye Adrian," Brian sighed.
  "Not my name," Vortex sang.
"You're telling me." Brian hissed then stalked away.
Duskfall was staring at the bottom of the door, his shoulders rising and falling. Brian pressed the panel so Vortex was once again cut off. He opened the door and gestured out. When Derrick didn't move, Brian gently pushed him towards the opening. He tried to ignore the sudden jolt that passed through his hand.
Duskfall walked out, and as they walked through the compound, he noticed Derrick glancing over at him every few seconds.
As soon as they were outside, Duskfall grabbed him and launched into the sky. Of course, Brian started screaming at him.
"What are you doing?!" Brian shouted at Derrick.
He didn't struggle because Brian didn't want to become a vigilante pancake on the pavement. The mask over his eyes prevented the wind from blinding him. Even though most people would be terrified at this height (Vexen apparently), Derrick's grip was extremely strong. They kept going until they were above a cumulonimbus cloud, probably three or four thousand feet in the air. His stomach was no longer computing with his mind. The wind whipped his slightly long hair around so hard he thought it would fly off. While the air was colder, his breathing was only slightly sped up.
Derrick stopped flying, his ginormous wings keeping them hovering. Brian was pretty sure his own expression was incredulous.
"Why did you take me up here?" Brian gasped.
Derrick suddenly let go of Brian, making his heart fall into his throat. If he could scream, he would, but the fear blocked everything out. He squeezed his eyes shut and prepared to hit solid ground. Brian then realized that he wasn't free falling at all, he was floating, three thousand feet in the air.
"Oh!" Brian nearly puked, "this isn't cool! How are you ever doing this?"
  "Telekinesis," Derrick replied.
"Wow," Brian sat in a crisscross position. It felt like an invisible force was holding him in place. If he felt like he wasn't secure then Brian would probably be screaming.
Here he was, floating at night, above the clouds, talking to a nationally known superhero with serious relationship issues. The moonlight made Duskfall look even more mysterious. A sea of clouds swan beneath him, it was like he was hallucinating.
"Why did you take me up here?" Brian repeated.
"Can you drop the voice changer and mask?" Derrick asked, "it's freaking me out. I keep thinking that you're Jason."
"I have blue eyes though," Brian shrugged, pulling off his mask and voice modulator.
"Answer the damn question, Payne." Brian sighed.
Derrick's visor mechanically peeled away, "I needed to get out of there."
"You know," Brian said, "I may not be a telepath, but I can tell when someone is lying."
"I felt that..." Derrick trailed off, then looked away, "you were disgusted by me."
"What?" Brian couldn't believe his ears.
"Well," Derrick's frown was illuminated by the moonlight, "when I was arguing with him, you looked extremely uncomfortable. So I assumed that...you didn't really approve, I guess."
Derrick nervously laughed, and it made color rush to Brian's cheeks. It actually sounded like a normal teenager laugh, but perfect.
"Dude," Brian stared at the ground, "how can someone not look uncomfortable when a superhero is with his ex-superhero boyfriend, looking hella heartbroken."
"You talk like a Californian," Derrick observed.
"I'm from New Jersey," Brian said with a mock accent.
"So," Derrick's nervous gaze met his, "it's...okay?"
"I can't judge," Brian held up his hands, "I've been crushing on you like no tomorrow."
Brian slapped a hand over his mouth again. Oh gosh why can't he stop blurting things out around this guy? Because he's hot, a voice reminded him.
  "Oh," Derrick's eyes widened.
The moonlight looks good on his face, he thought, okay I really need to stop thinking.
"Sorry," Brian blurted out, "I know you're not interested because of Adrian and all that."
"No," Derrick laughed again, but this time it was drool worthy. "No that's not it."
  "You can't date non-superheroes because you're Batman?"
  "What's with you and Batman?"
Brian wasn't sure who kissed who first, he decided later they both moved at the same time. It was awfully romantic being above the clouds kissing a guy with angelic wings. He was very inexperienced, but Derrick was not. Even though it was chaste, it was fairly desperate. As soon as Brian pulled away, he was certain Derrick was blushing.
  "What now?" Derrick asked.
"Now I'm going to whisper seductively into your com-set whenever I'm hacking for you."
"Oh gosh," Derrick groaned, "what have I done."
"I will not having you dump me after thirty seconds, Derrick," Brian teased.
  "We should go," Derrick murmured.
"You going to carry me bridal style?" Brian waggled his eyebrows.
"Do you want me to?" Derrick smirked.
  "Don't do that!" Brian screeched.
  "What?" Derrick looked bewildered.
"Smirk!" Brian shouted. "That is far too seductive for your own good!"
  "Um," Derrick was perplexed, "okay?"
"Good," Brian nodded, on the brink of laughter, "onward, angel of darkness!"
"I don't understand you," Derrick shook his head, but he was smiling.
"Neither does anyone," Brian waved him off, "let's go."
