Chapter 19

Above is a picture of Archwind
----------------------------------

"So let me get this straight," Jason paced the floor of the abandoned building they had brung the experiments to, "you were experimented on for how many years?"
"7," Vexen replied, leaning against the wall.
"Then you were supposed to be killed, and she," he gestured to Archwind, "was supposed to be sent out to kill us?"
"Yes," Vexen sighed, his eyes flashed purple again, "but the scientist let me out, and I let out Archwind."
"You should get regular names for when you go back into the real world," Night spoke up from her hidden position in the rafters.
"Archwind asks 'what are your guy's names?'" Vexen asked, crossing his arms.
"We have secret identities to protect," Jason said.
"Not saying," Night replied at the same time.
"Okay," Vexen shrugged. "What should we do?"
"I need to talk with my partner for a moment," Jason said, melting into the shadows.
He reappeared up on a wood beam where Night was perched. Her eyes were narrowed as she watched the newcomers. Skull  nudged her and the girl jumped, still not making a sound.
"What should we do with them?" Skull asked her.
"I may have an idea," Night said quietly, turning off her voice modifier, "they can stay in our southern base, I can hack into the school database and add them into it. I'm pretty sure creating identities for them won't be hard, Vexen will need to wear colored contacts or sunglasses though."
"I think they probably have an education," Skull added. "Hopefully they programmed it into their minds."
"That would simplify things," Night sighed, "we've never had to take care of other people. And we can't exactly leave them on the streets."
"Let's take them to the base for now," Skull said, glancing down at the powered teens, "we don't want Johansen capturing them either."
"Yes," Night nodded, "I'm going to go patrol, you take them back."
"You patrol?" Skull frowned. "I just got back out here, why don't I go kick some criminal-"
"Skull, you have much better people skills than I do," Night crossed her arms, "think about it. Plus you need to train, I think you know how much muscle you've lost."
"Is that an insult, my apprentice?"
  "Yes, now get down there."
"Fine, fine!" He held up his hands, "but I'm going out in a week whether you like it or not."
Skull jumped down from the rafters, landing steadily on his feet. It was a 10 feet drop, but his armor absorbed most of the impact, plus his powers helped a little. Vexen's head lifted, now staring at the armored vigilante. Archwind was just standing there creepily, her expression unreadable due to her full head mask.
"Any news?" Vexen questioned, uncrossing his arms.
"We're going to take you back to our base," Skull explained, "do either of you have a way of going fast? Or do you need a lift?"
"Arch?" He saw Vexen look at the quiet girl.
Archwind nodded then her feet lifted off the ground, she flew over to Vexen and then landed swiftly on the ground. He whistled, smirking playfully at Vexen.
"You sure have a badass girlfriend," Jason remarked, his words reminding himself of Night.
"She's not my girlfriend," Vexen quickly said, Archwind shook her head slightly.
"Sure thing," he jokingly saluted the hooded teen.
"Why do criminals fear you again?" Vexen raised an eyebrow.
"Because I stab them," Skull shrugged, "lets go."

Skull pulled into his safe house, the concrete wall sliding open for his motorcycle. He stopped his vehicle, taking off his black helmet. The garage area was low, he hoped the caped girl could fly into it. Skull walked over to the control panel, his hand hovering over the door switch. As soon as a white and black streak flew through the enhance he pulled the lever, the thick wall sliding back into place. The concrete scraped the ground, the sound scratchy and rough. Archwind landed gently onto the ground, her cape falling back onto her ankles.
"At least I don't have to puke this time," Vexen choked out, coughing.
"Alright," Skull went over to the door leading into the compound, "follow me, you do not want to get lost in this place."
He noticed Vexen and Archwind exchanging a glance. Vexen walked over to him as Archwind floated. Skull was kind of jealous of Archwind's ability to fly, it must have been a scientific breakthrough. Luckily the girl didn't seem to have a fear of heights, good thing too, it would've been a waste of her powers. Skull opened the door, pressing a glove to a finger scanner. He had programmed the security system to recognize engravings in his gloves. You can't leave your fingerprints as a vigilante, people can find out your identity.
"Recognized," the computer spoke, the automatic door opening, "Black Skull. Two entities unrecognized, activate security protocol?"
  "No, override."
  "Confirmed."
"Your security is more advanced than Johansen's," Vexen said from behind him.
"Yeah," Skull shrugged, glancing back at Vexen, "she's pretty dumb for a CEO, I personally hate her with a burning passion. This security system is at least 4 years old."
"What is this place anyways?" Vexen asked, "Archwind wants to know."
"It's one of my four bases," he replied, "I have warehouses on the north, east, west, and south parts of Eximius. Vexen, how do you know what Archwind wants, she can't talk right?"
"Yes she can't talk," Vexen said, "I discovered one of my abilities is to read minds."
"What?" Skull hissed, spinning around, "don't you dare look into mine, I will stab you I swear."
"I won't!" Vexen held up his hands in submission, "I swear! Your mind is silent, it has some sort of mental shielding around it! Some people's minds are unreadable!"
"If you do I'll know," Skull narrowed his eyes, spinning back around, "anyways! This is the main area."
The main area of the compound was an open space about the size of a basketball court. A training area took up about half the room. In the training area matts were strewn across the ground, and two punching bags hung from the ceiling. A couple attack dummies were leaned against the wall, their fabric filled with stab holes. The other half were tables with random weapons, gadgets, and pieces of armor. On one wall was a built in computer screen, like the one Night had activated. Akin to his other bases, this one was made out of titanium and concrete. The lighting was dim, but the room was still easily visible.
"Are we going to stay here?" Vexen gestured to the room.
"Yes," Black Skull said sarcastically, "we're going to make you sleep on the concrete ground in pitch black."
"Okay..." Vexen said slowly, "then where are we staying?"
He saw Archwind float across the room, picking up and inspecting some swords. Ice traveled up a blade Archwind was turning in her hands. Black Skull went over to another door, opening the regular hinged wood. He gestured towards the room, Vexen walked one to him. Inside the regular door was a bedroom, two single beds placed on either side of the bedroom. A dresser was between the two beds, dust covering the majority of the room. Two armchairs were against the back wall near the door..
"Is this your room?" Vexen walked inside, Archwind now silently behind him.
"Never slept in here once," Skull shook his head, "this is a guest room. We didn't know if we'd ever have other heroes come to town, or maybe have some actual friends. Anyways, we wanted to be prepared incase people came here. Night and I have different rooms, we aren't exactly physical in our relationship."
"Wait," Vexen spun around, "you two date?!"
"I wouldn't call it dating." Skull couldn't hold back a smirk, "it's more like a 'working relationship.'"
"That ought to be interesting," Vexen said, "now can we discuss the secret identity thing?"
"Sure," Skull sat down in a armchair, "go ahead and chose beds."
He had put his scythe on the ground, you can't sit down with the thing across your back. It was kind of annoying, but he did chose that weapon, so he was to blame.
Archwind walked over to the left bed, floating criss cross above the covers. Vexen sat down on the edge of the right bed. Skull was surprised they didn't even exchange a work about it.
"We chose these because of our status capsules," Vexen explained Skull's curiosity, "it just seemed right to be on the same side as our usual sleeping places."
"Okay," Skull leaned forwards, "so do you want to chose names or do you want us to? Did you two have names before experimentation?"
"We had names I think," Vexen's face became strained. "Almost all of our memories have been wiped. I think we'll chose them...yeah, Archwind wants to chose a name too."
"Can you two take off your masks?" Jason asked, "it would make things easier."
"Why can't you take off yours?"
"Right now, Night and I are your only shot at getting a normal life, please try to work with us," Skull pursed his lips, "and we have secret identities to protect. Only two people know my secret identity and I hope to keep it that way."
"Fine," Vexen sighed, pulling down his black and red streaked hood.
Vexen had weirdly strawberry blonde hair, it didn't go with his eyes. A scar ran over Vexen's right eye, adding to his coolness. He doubted the people who gave him dark purple eyes cared about his looks though. Vexen pulled of his bandanna, revealing a pretty cliché chiseled jaw. It seemed all superheroes in his eyes just HAD to have good looks, they cannot be ugly in any form or way. He looked towards Archwind expectantly, trying to encourage the shady girl.
Archwind sighed audibly, surprising Jason, he didn't think the girl could make any sounds at all. She grabbed the bottom of her full mask which visibly ended at her collarbone and pulled it off. The older teen had short, pure white hair, and gray-blue eyes. She had a faded scar that wrapped around her neck and over her vocal chords.
"Better," Jason nodded, feeling a slight impulse to remove his mask. "Have any ideas about names?"
"I want to stick with the letter 'V,'" Vexen paused, "Arch says she wants to go with an 'A' name."
"Victor, Val, Vincent, Vance-"
"Vance...Xavier," Vexen interrupted him, "please."
"Archwind," Skull looked towards the white haired girl, "what do you want to be-"
"She says she wants to be called Aura Winters."
"The Latin word meaning breeze," Skull raised an eyebrow, "nice. Hope no one in your new school knows Latin-"
"Wait," Vexen held up his hand, "we're going to school?"
"Yep," Black Skull leaned back in his chair, "and good luck with that. We're going to send you to Oakcreek High. It's the closest to here, on the South side of town. One question, do you two have an education?"
"Yes," Vexen said thoughtfully, "we...have the education level of High School seniors. They wanted us to have enough knowledge to go on undercover missions if it was needed."
"That's good," Skull nodded, relieved. "Anything else you two need?"
"Food, water, new clothes, and showers."
"Oh yeah," Skull chucked, standing up, "the guest bathroom is right through that side door. There's a fridge in the main area, it should have some food and water if Night is restocking our bases. Clothes are in the wardrobe, they should be able to fit you guys. Vexen, if you need to change your eye color there are colored contacts in the bathroom cabinet. Anything else?"
"How will we get to the school?"
"You can walk," Skull explained. "Or take the bus, do you two know your way around town?"
"Yeah, sadly because of more mental programming."
"Good, I'll see you tomorrow, if you need me, press the emergency button next to the door."
As Black Skull left the room, he noticed Archwind's eyes were pressed shut, her face slack. The girl appeared to be in deep meditation. He watched Vexen run a hand through his hair, then pull off his gloves. He shook his head, this day just got weirder. I have my work cut out of me.
