Chapter 29.
Two weeks later
December 24, 1966
I woke up to the sound of the front door shutting. Small flutters in my stomach as I sat up.
"Martha?" I called. She picked her head up from under the covers and went back to bed. I sighed and got up. Out the door, downstairs, to the living room. A small note on the coffee table.
Off out on holiday. Merry Christmas in advance.
-Paul
I bit my lip and sat on the sofa, resting a hand on my stomach and looking at the tree.
"Merry Christmas to you too Paul."
..
Paul was gone until after New Years. Him and Jane were taking a holiday to go off and spend some time alone. I had to admit, after that day everything happened, It meant nothing. I felt bad for making Richard turn against me. He didn't hate me. He just simply stopped coming around. That was the end of it. I couldn't call the studio or his home. Raising any kind of suspicion amongst the media or fans could get my ass back out in nowhere.
Emily sadly was living her life in Manchester. She mentioned mom called to check up on her. The two had problems of their own. I couldn't protect my baby sister. I couldn't even protect myself. So where did I fit in? The club. With Martha. On my own. Just us two. Spending the holidays together as usual.
..
I decided to go back to bed and get some more rest. I had nothing planned anyways. No Christmas shopping. Well, maybe for Martha. And myself. Maybe Michael? He's been a dear friend to me lately.
It was twelve in the afternoon when I managed to pry myself out of bed. Martha wouldn't budge. I had to sing her song to get her moving.
We went downstairs, ate, went upstairs. I showered and got dressed for the day. Martha staying behind with the tv on as I left for a day or shopping.
..
"Happy Holidays." The smiling cashier said with a wave. I smiled back and left out the shop.
I was carrying a few bags, walking alone down the road when I bumped into someone turning the corner.
"Oh I'm sorry!" I blushed.
"It's quite alright I...Sadie."
"George."
We stood in silence. I looked around. He looked at me strangely.
"Are ye lookin for someone?" He chuckled. I shook my head.
"No I...shouldn't there be like a mob of girls chasing after you?"
"Don't believe everything you see on telly yeah? I know the place quite well love. If there so happens to be a mob about, I know where to run. I can assure you."
I giggled and looked down at my feet.
"So um...what's goin on with you?" He asked.
"You don't have to make conversation with me George."
"Wha....why wouldn't I not want to? Richard em...he told me everything."
I glanced at him. "And?"
He shrugged. "I dunno. He's gotten over it. Spending lots of time with the band and family."
I nodded. "Good. I'm happy he's finally living his own life. It's better than ruining a marriage and getting involved with a messed up girl like me."
"Don't say that about yourself Sadie. It's not good for you."
I sighed and ran a hand through my hair. "I should go. Have a Merry Christmas alright?"
I began to walk away when he called out to me.
"Did Paul leave already?"
I turned around and nodded. "Yeah. Why?"
"It must be lonely in that flat."
I walked back over to him and shrugged. "So? I can manage on my own. It's no different than any other year. It's like being back home."
"It's not fair. You bein alone. Carrying his child while he goes off and has a fuckin party...."
"It's alright George. I told him I'm fine. When it's all over, there's not a Christmas he'll spend with this baby. Why should he start now?"
He just stayed silent looking down at me. I shrugged and began my walk back to Paul's. His eyes on me until I turned the corner.
..
9:45 pm
I whistled some Christmas songs while wrapping a few presents. Two for Michael. One for Martha. One for myself.
"You've been a good girl Martha my love. As for me..." I tore open my gift and pulled out the new coat I bought, putting it on. "I don't deserve a gift on Christmas."
Martha whined and licked my hand. I petted her and grabbed my guitar case.
"I'll see you in an hour alright? I love you." She followed me, watching me leave out the door.
..
One hour later
"Happy Holidays everyone." I said before getting off stage. Everyone clapped and went on with their own buisness before the next performer arrived. I set my things away and met up with Michael at a booth.
"Merry Christmas!" He smiled, nudging a wrapped box to me.
"Aww a present!" I giggled. "Here you are." I pulled the two gifts out of my bag.
"Two? I've been rather good this year yeah?"
I laughed. "Well, I saw a cute charm necklace with a matching bracelet in a shop and I remember you telling me you had no idea what to get your daughter so..."
I pointed to the small box. He smiled.
"Thank you Sadie. You didn't have to."
"I wanted to." I smiled. He leaned over and kissed my cheek. "Can I open this now?" I asked, shaking my gift.
"You have to wait till Christmas!" He laughed.
"Come on." I pouted.
"Nope. Just one more day."
"Fine mister bossy. As for...Hey!" I laughed as he tore his gift open.
"You remembered!" He chuckled, pulling out a bottle of gin.
"I told you it'd happen." I giggled. He read over the label and nodded.
"This is it. Fuckin christ I haven't had this in years. Come on you gotta have some."
"I'm pregnant Michael!" I laughed.
"One drink won't kill you both. Come on, this is the good stuff." He grabbed a small shot glass. I bit my lip.
"What the fuck. It's Christmas Eve anyways." I gave in.
"There ye are." He poured the glass full, along with his own. We clinked our glasses and took a drink. It was strong but smooth. I coughed a bit and took a breath.
"My god. That is good. I should've bought myself a bottle."
He laughed. "Five more months."
I sighed. "Five more months. I better get going Michael. Happy Holidays yeah?"
"You too love. G'night. Thanks for the bottle." He winked. I giggled and gave him a kiss goodbye, leaving the noisy club for the night.
..
When I got back to Paul's. I noticed a car out in the drive. I slowly got out of my vehicle and barely made it to the door, when it opened. I jumped and looked up to see...
"Richard? Wha...."
"You don't remember that night do you. Candlestick park. The drinking. The partying..."
"When I got pregnant with Paul's child." I nodded.
"Is that what you want to believe?"
I looked at him strangely. "Richard I...I don't remember much of that night. It was Paul I slept with..."
"Yeah. He not being the only one."
"What are you saying!?" I asked, panicking. He sighed.
"Only one of us used protection Sadie. Why don't you think Paul's so distant from the whole situation?? He knows."
I took a step back and shook my head. "No. Paul is this baby's father....isn't he??"
