Chapter 7: Classes Start; the VKs Settle (Pt. 2)

Hubert entered the Remedial Goodness 101 classroom after lunch ended for the day. He looked around the room, tracing the lines in the wooden desks. A chalkboard stood at the front, and Hubert rolled his eyes. "This isn't the early 1980s. People don't use chalkboards anymore," he muttered to himself, plopping himself in a chair near the board.

"I know, but chalkboards prevent students from writing profanities all over it and messing with my lesson plans," answered Jane, coming into the classroom. "Hello, Mr. Pinkerton."

"I sincerely apologize for what I said, ma'am." Hubert tensed up, sitting upright in his seat.

"No, it's quite alright." Jane waved off his previous remark. "Truth be told, I wish we were using whiteboards in here as well, but you know my mother."

"I don't know Fairy Godmother," admitted Hubert. "This is my first time in Auradon."

"I know," nodded Jane, setting her lesson plans on her desk. "I'm going to review some of the basic goodness rules with you to test your knowledge. That will determine what I teach you throughout this school year."

"Cool." Hubert inwardly rolled his eyes. He knew how to be good. Why did he need this class? Because someone stereotyped him as an evil villain?

"If someone hands you a crying baby, do you: A. curse it, B. Lock it in a tower, C. Give it a bottle, or D. Carve out its heart?" Jane asked Hubert.

"C. Give it a bottle," answered Hubert.

"You find a vile of poison. Do you: A. put it in the king's wine, B. paint it on an apple, or C. turn it over to the proper authorities?"

"C. Turn it over to the proper authorities."

"You're rather intelligent, aren't you?" Jane instead inquired.

"I am. Hans taught me how to be good on the Isle."

"I gather you would rather be playing a sport than sitting in a classroom?" Jane asked.

"Yes, but tourney isn't my thing." Hubert shrugged his shoulders.

"Maybe try out for R.O.A.R., which is a fencing team."

"Maybe."

"Tryouts are after school, in the amphitheater."

"I'll check it out. Thank you, Mrs. De Vil."

"It's no problem, Mr. Pinkerton."

Hubert entered the amphitheater, unsure of what R.O.A.R. looked like. What he saw were male students clad in white uniforms, masks on their heads, holding swords. Hazel stood beside him, underneath an illusion spell; she appeared to be male, and the spell would only be broken when she removed her mask. Hubert held her hand, squeezing it gently.

"Everything'll be okay," he muttered softly in her ear.

"I know," whispered Hazel. As long as the mask remained on until the end of tryouts, she'd be safe.

Hubert spotted Alex, who was training by himself. He approached his roommate, asking, "Alex? You're trying out for R.O.A.R. too?"

"Yeah," sighed Alex. He hadn't mentioned how his father was the coach for the team.

"Well, best of luck to you," stated Hubert, shaking Alex's hand.

"Thanks. You too," nodded Alex, returning the handshake.

Hubert grinned, walking back to where Hazel was standing. Alex narrowed his eyes upon seeing Hazel. Why is she under an illusion spell? he asked himself as his father entered the amphitheater.

The entire group lined up as Kristoff Bjorgman surveyed the students wishing to try out. Hubert snuck a peek at Alex, who had gone pale with what seemed like utter terror. Hazel also noticed the fear, biting her bottom lip. "Alex is terrified," she mumbled to Hubert.

"Yeah, and I think I can identify the source," responded Hubert, anger flooding his veins, subtly glaring at Kristoff. He did not like him at all. Whatever he was doing to Alex would have to be ended, but "how" was the million-dollar question he had to answer.

"You'll be facing off with someone, and if you win, you have a place on the team. There are eight positions and a captain on the team, so some of you will not be able to make it," explained Kristoff. "Remember: No close contact with your hands or feet, no harming each other, and no cheating."

Chad Junior Charming smirked; he thrived in this environment. Sure, his father may have lost to Jay when they were attending Auradon Prep, but Chad Junior would not lose. He was not a loser, he was a winner.

"Pair off, and begin," stated Kristoff, standing beside the mat.

The group paired off and began to fight. Hubert used his ambidextrousness to his advantage, switching off whenever he could. Hazel used her left hand, bringing down power in her efforts. Hubert took down a few students, who accepted their defeats with grace. Hazel beat a few other male students, who weren't even fazed by their losses. With her goal of making the team in mind, she paired off with Chad Junior, beginning her battle with him. She was quickly winning.

Chad Junior had faced off with Hazel, and he couldn't believe that he was going to lose to this man! When the man delivered a blow that knocked Chad Junior's sword out of his hand, Chad Junior knew he had lost. He remained standing where he was when Kristoff called about eight or nine students.

"Since the nine of you won, eight of you will have places on the team," announced Kristoff to the winners. He looked at Hazel, who still wore her mask. "You can take off your masks."

Mal approached the balcony above the amphitheater, looking at the tryouts. She'd spoken with Lonnie about her time as the captain of the R.O.A.R. team, and Lonnie had revealed that Chad Charming tried to keep her off the team because she wasn't a man. Because of this new information (Mal had asked Jay to clarify her statement, which he did), the current Queen of Auradon was unsure of Kristoff and whether he would spout the same bullshit of how women can't do anything men could do.

Hazel removed her mask, and the illusion spell wore off. Kristoff gaped at the sight of Hans Westergaard's daughter standing in front of him. He could've sworn she was a man a few seconds ago! Mal applauded Hazel's ambition in her head; if she were in the girl's place, she would've done the same thing to earn herself a spot.

"The team shall be comprised of a captain and eight men," spat Kristoff.

"Please don't tell me you're going to be sexist as well," groaned Mal, walking away from the balcony, entering the amphitheater.

The entire group faced Mal as she walked towards Kristoff. Kristoff bowed to her.

"The rules very clearly state that-" Kristoff began, but was cut off by Mal.

"-that the team shall be comprised of a captain and eight men," snarled Mal. "I understand the rules perfectly, thank you. But the rules never state that a man has to be the team captain now, do they?"

"They do not, Your Majesty," hissed Kristoff.

"So, award Hazel with the position of captain. We do not tolerate sexism here in Auradon Prep. Do you understand, Kristoff?" Mal questioned.

"Yes, Your Majesty." Kristoff nodded.

Mal asked Hazel if she would come to her office after tryouts were over. Hazel accepted the invitation, unsure of what the queen's intentions were. Kristoff ended tryouts once he announced Hazel was team captain, storming into his office. The male students left before Hubert walked Hazel to the entrance of Auradon Prep, heading back to his dorm. Hazel took a deep breath before she entered Mal and Ben's castle.

Hey, guys, gals, non-binary pals. I hope you're all feeling okay; if not, my private messages are open to those who want to talk. Anyway, if you enjoyed this chapter, let me know in the comments.

Yes, I know that Kristoff would never act the way he does here in canon, but this is the fanfic version of him in the Descendants universe. WolfieFrozenFangirl and I imagine that he would be like this. It makes more sense in later chapters, but this is only a sneak peek as to who he is in this fanfiction.
