3: He's Dead

JAMIE opened his eyes. It was dark, and he was scared. But then he saw the moon, and it seemed to chase the darkness away.

He stood on his feet in the snow bank on a familiar street. Across the road was a house.

His house.

Jamie ran over and opened the door.

The house was empty, void of the his family that should be there. He searched around what was supposed to be the living room, the wooden floorboards creaking under his feet. Looking for any clues as to where his family had gone, he wandered the first floor.

But there were no signs as to where they were. He walked up the stairs, checking in his parents' and Sophie's bedrooms to see if they were there. As he suspected, they weren't.

He was confused. Where were they? He opened the door to his room. All of his belongings were still there...all except a picture frame that was once on the small desk in the corner.

He swiped a finger across the desk, a thin layer of dust was settled all around the room. How long had his family been gone?

Jamie heard the front door open and shut softly. Light foot steps caused the stairs to creak. The intruder made its way to his door and opened it.

Pippa stood, staring blankly in the room with tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Pippa?" He asked.

But she didn't say anything. All she did was continue to stare around the room. At last she moved, walking over to the window she sat in the seat. She closed her eyes.

"Pippa, what's going on? Here's my fa--"

"I miss you, Jamie. I know you wouldn't have been able to live with yourself, if she died. So I guess I understand why you took her place. I wish you hadn't, I wish you were here next to me." Her sobs became more full of emotion and longing, "Even though I never said it...I fell in love with you. But now you're dead," she laughed at the irony, "and you'll never know because I was too afraid to tell you."

"What are you talking about?" He asked as he sat next to her. He tried to put his arm around her shoulders but they went through her.

And that's when the memories came flooding back to him.

Snowball fights.

Sophie.

A car.

"No..." He whispered. That wasn't enough, "No!" He jumped up and screamed. "Pippa please," he begged in front of her face. She stared right through him. "No no no. Please. I'm here, I'm okay. Look at me!"

She turned her head to look out the window.

"I can't be dead!"

But he knew he was.

RAPUNZEL whined, "Anna can we be done for today?" They had been planning for hours and it was almost ten. Kristoff got back an hour and a half ago and had been helping too.

"Honey, I agree. I'm tired." Kristoff sighed.

"Oh fine," Anna frowned. "Have fun with Eugene," she winked. "Come on ice-man." Anna stood up and walked over to Kristoff's chair, hugging him from behind. She whispered something in his ear and he blushed.

Rapunzel stood and walked over to the door, "Goodnight lovebirds."

"Night."

Rapunzel shut the door and walked down the hallway towards her suite. She reached the white-painted door and twisted the knob. The room was dark after the door softly clicked shut.

She walked over to the dresser to lit a few candles. Then she crossed the room and crouched by the fireplace. Putting in a couple logs she started the fire.

Sighing at the warmth and light the fire created in the room, she curled up on the love-seat a few feet away.

She closed her eyes--waiting.

Fifteen minutes passed. Rapunzel heard the door open. Eugene didn't say anything as he sat next to her and wrapped his arms around her. He kissed her forehead, "How was it?"

"Fun up until it became too much."

"Hmm."

Eugene kissed her neck, his soft lips continuously brushing against her skin. Rapunzel moaned quietly as he started to untie her dress. Pulling it off she turned around to face him, planting a longer and deeper kiss on his lips.

Layer by layer their clothes came off. He picked her up and gently set her on the bed, climbing on top of her he kissed her again.

JACK realized Elsa had fallen asleep a little while ago. He refused to leave her side after she just let him in. He stroked her dark brown hair. He still hadn't seen her smile...he missed it. But having her in his arms was close enough for now.

All he wanted to do was protect her. A few months ago she didn't need protecting. After she lost her powers she became vulnerable and weak. She wasn't herself and that hurt him.

She was the most amazing person he had ever known yet she was so afraid of herself. So insecure. He tried so hard to understand why. But he just didn't get it.

That's why he was so dedicated to protecting her. Not only from people that wanted to hurt her but from herself as well.

He stared at her innocent sleeping face. Again he found himself staring at her--for how long he didn't know. All he knew was that she had to stop hurting herself. She still looked younger when she slept. For some reason he thought a lot would change in a month and a half...it didn't. Well, other than her hair.

Once in a while he got bored so he gently rubbed above her lip, causing her to sneeze. She was absolutely adorable when she sneezed.

The sun was starting to come up, pink and orange light filtering through the curtains. Elsa groaned and rolled over to her other side. Jack decided it was time to get up, he needed to make it snow somewhere. This winter had been warm so far since he had spent most of his time in Arendelle trying to get Elsa to talk to him.

Jack quickly kissed her forehead, sighed, and climbed off the bed.

"Where are you going?"

"Huh?" Jack turned around to see Elsa sitting up in the bed.

"You tried so hard to break my shell and help me...and now you're leaving?"

He walked over and sat on the bed next to her. "I just have to make a blizzard in a few places, that's all. I'll be back in a couple hours, I promise."

She nodded her head and hugged him.

This time he kissed her burning cheek. He walked over to the door and opened it. He was surprised to see the Easter Kangaroo standing in front of him about to knock the door. Over his shoulder was a red sack that was squirming around.

"Jack, mate, Máni's summoned ya and the four."

"What for?"

Bunny shrugged, "Don't know. He didn't tell us anything except that there's gonna be three new guardians."

"Again? Who?"

"I know, shocked me too. Rapunzel's husband is one. So is Astrid. But Máni is waitin' fer all of ya to tell us the last one."

Jack looked back at Elsa, "Els, winter is going to have to wait."

Confused, she stood up and walked over to the door, "Bunny?"

Bunny smiled sadly "Hello sheila. Yer needed at the workshop. Make sure ta bring yer cousin too."

"How will we get Rapunzel to go since she doesn't remember?" Elsa asked silently.

"Just get er ta the shop and Tooth will take care of her memories." The sack he was carrying started struggling and moving around.

"Bunny, what's in the sack?" Elsa glared.

"This is what we do to the newbies. Remember, you were sacked too."

"Let Eugene out."

"No. It's routine." He crossed his arms over his chest, still holding the bag in his hand. Jack saw a glint in Elsa's eyes and smiled, she was getting some of her fire back--which she so desperately needed.

"E. Aster Bunnymund. Let. Him. Out." Elsa stared darkly at him as she pointed to the ground.

Bunny sneered, "I'm sorry, Your Majesty, but no can do."

"Bunny--!"

"Els, let's just get going." Jack interrupted.

She huffed, "Fine, but first we need to get Rapunzel."

ASTRID glanced over to Hiccup as they flew towards Dun Broch--he was staring blankly out into the distance. He seemed distressed and she didn't understand why. Every time she tried asking him about it he would shrug it off and say it was nothing.

She flew ahead of him, cutting him off to get his attention.

"What are you doing?" He asked in his usual way of dragging out the 'what'.

"Hiccup, I know something is wrong. Why won't you tell me?"

He flew closer to her and forced Toothless to hover next to Stormfly. "It's hard to explain."

"Try me."

He opened his mouth to say something. An arrow shot through the sky, barely missing Hiccup's outstretched arm. They both looked down, searching for the shooter. She spotted a mop of familiar curly red hair holding a bow right at the edge of the castle, "Down there." She pointed to the figure.

He looked in the direction she pointed. "Really Mer?" He murmured in annoyance under his breath. "Let's go."

They flew down to where she was, hoping off the dragons. Toothless tackled the girl.

"Ugh Toodless get off a me!"

Astrid couldn't remember the girl's name but she knew the girl helped in defeating Pitch.

"Toothless," Hiccup warned. Toothless rolled off of her, licking her one last time. The girl groaned. "Sorry Merida...but now that I think of it you did almost shoot me."

Merida! That's what it is!

Merida strung her bow onto her back. "I was aimin' near ya not at ya. And it's fine. Now let's go, me mum is happy yer here--she wants ta talk more about da treaty and all dat fun stuff. And what in the name of Máni happened ta ya?"

They started walking through the busy courtyard of the castle. "What do you mean?" Astrid asked.

"He used to be a scrawny wee lamb and now he's taller den me!" Merida joked, punching Hiccup in the arm--just like Astrid always did.

"Ow! That doesn't mean that doesn't hurt, Mer." Hiccup whined.

"Yer gonna be hurtin' a lot more when ma dad sees ya."

"Wha--why?" Hiccup asked, slightly panicked.

"'Cause he's gonna hug ya and probably crack yer ribs in da process," Merida chuckled. "We can drop Toodless and yer Nadder off at da stables." They continued through the busy people to the stables, dropping off Toothless and Stormfly. Hiccup made sure to tell the stablehands not to feed the dragons eels and off they went inside the castle.

"Have you been here before?" Astrid whispered to Hiccup as Merida went to go find her parents, leaving the couple in the stone entrance hall.

He shrugged, "Only twice. Once when I was younger, and once when we were on our way back and it was brief."

"Hiccup me boy, come here!" A man's voice called.

She stared warrily at the large wooden door from where the sound escaped. Hiccup smiled, "Come on." He took her hand and lead her through the door into a large stone room, "Hello King Fergus, Queen Elinor." Hiccup greeted as he bowed.

Astrid followed his lead and did the same. When she looked back up she saw three figures. Merida was one; the others were that of a man and woman...presumably the king and queen sitting in their thrones.

King Fergus--like Hiccup--had fake leg. He had curly red hair and vibrant blue eyes. He was tall and muscular, draped in blue plaid, a black bear pelt, and chain mail. He seemed like a jolly and protective person, but also someone you wouldn't want to anger.

Queen Elinor was wearing a navy blue dress that touched the floor and had long sleeves. Her floor-length brown but greying hair was tied in a single braid that fell over her shoulder and a small gold crown sat at the top of her head. Her warm brown eyes bore into Astrid, but only for a moment before looking to Hiccup.

Elinor walked up and gave Hiccup a hug. Astrid didn't catch what she said but she knew the queen had whispered something in his ear.

"And who would dis be?" Elinor asked, gesturing to her.

"Dat's Astrid, mum. Hiccup's girlfriend." Merida rolled her eyes. Everyone could feel the tension in the room.

Fergus cleared his throat, "Merida, why don't ya show dem around?" That suggestion didn't seem to make the tension any better.

EUGENE huffed. Earlier he was stuffed into a sack by some odd looking kangaroo with a strange accent. He wanted to get out and he practically already tried everything.

"E. Aster Bunnymund. Let. Him. Out." Elsa commanded. At least someone was trying to help him. Unfortunately, the rabid kangaroo refused and now they were on the move again. "Remind me how we're going to explain this to Rapunzel?"

"Not exactly sure at the moment..." Jack said.

Oh great, So the Winter Spirit was there and wasn't helping him...that was nice of him. Yeah no. And what did they have to explain to Rapunzel? That they decided to kidnap her husband? That would go over real well.

Someone knocked on a door. The door clicked open and there was a yawn followed by a yelp, "Eugene!" Rapunzel called.

"Rapunzel it's okay, hes a friend!" Jack tried to calm her down. A friend? Who do these people hang out with?

"What is that?" She asked.

"I'm the Easter Bunny, sheila."

"Bunny? But you look like a kangaroo..." She whispered.

"Jack we don't have time for this!" The so-called Easter Bunny groaned, "We still have to pick up Merida,  Hiccup and Astrid."

"Please tell me you don't plan on sacking Astrid too?" Elsa asked.

What is going on?

MERIDA roamed the halls after leaving Astrid and Hiccup off in their room. Their meeting was slightly uncomfortable. Hiccup had told her that he had to tell her parents something as soon as possible. She still had no idea what it could possibly be. But he did look sad for a moment when he said it.

She reached the Great Hall where her parents were still sitting. "How are dey, dear?" Her mum asked.

"Good. Dey said dey'd be down in a little bit ta talk about someding important."

"Do ya know what it is?" Dad asked.

She rolled her eyes, "If I did, I woulda told ya."

Merida sat in her throne to the left of her father. Her parents talked for a short while until Astrid and Hiccup appeared in the doorway.

"Ya can come in," Fergus chuckled.

"Uhh...right." Hiccup mumbled awkwardly as they walked into the room. "I'm afraid I have bad news," he started. "My father, Stoick the Vast, Chief of Berk, has recently passed away."

Merida gasped, "What?" She knew Hiccup wasn't particularly fond of his father, but having him pass away must be terrible. She coudn't imagine what it would be like to lose her father.

Hiccup looked down and Astrid put a hand on his shoulder. "Recently we broke into war with Drago Bludvist and we lost him to a dragon's misfire." He sighed and looked back up, "I...am now Chief of Berk. And seeing as that the treaty between our nations was my and Merida's idea, I plan on keeping it."

"Well of course," Elinor said. "Hiccup I am truly sorry for your loss," she said gently.

"Thank you Queen Elinor, would you excuse us now."

"You may go, dinner will be in an hour or so."

The two bowed again and left the room, "I'll be back in a wee bit, mum." She calmly walked out of the hall but the second she shut the door behind her, she raced off to the stables. She had a feeling she would find Hiccup there with Toothless.

And she was right.

"Why didn't ya tell me?" She asked.

The startled chief spun around and stared at her. his cheeks were wet as if he'd been crying. It took him a long time to respond, as if he was trying to figure out the right thing to say. "I don't know," his voice cracked. Merida climbed over the fence and into the stable.

She hugged him and pat his head as he silently cried. "Ya promised ta always be dere for me, so I'll always be here fer ya too." She whispered. It hurt her to see him this way. He was never strong physically, but he was emotionally. So seeing him so broken, broke her heart.

"I have no idea what I'm doing," he told her.

She chuckled, "Neither do I."

Out of nowhere the was a blinding flash and four figures appeared. They pulled apart, attempting to make out who they were.

Jack, Bunny, and a brunette Rapunzel and Elsa stood there. "Is Astrid here?" Jack asked, they nodded, "well, I guess we only have to make one trip then..."

ELSA looked around the workshop, nothing had changed in the last month and a half. North smiled at them but glared at Bunny holding the two sacks, "I told you not to sack them!'

"It's what we've always done for new recruits! I couldn't change that now." Bunny argued.

Hiccup groaned, "Let them out! And don't say I didn't warn you when Astrid comes at you with her ax."

"I'm sorry but who are you people?" Rapunzel asked looking around the room at North, Tooth and Sandy.

"Oh, right." Tooth giggled and handed Rapunzel a small golden cylinder, "Touch your thumb to the center." She instructed. Rapunzel did as she was told and gasped, her eyes searched blankly around the room. Her eyes paused, focusing on Elsa.

"Did that really happen?"

She nodded, "I'm sorry we had to keep it from you, but you had to go and live your life."

Rapunzel hugged her, it surprised her but after a moment she was accepted it, "So that's why your powers disappeared?" Elsa nodded again, feeling depressed after the mention of losing her powers.

"Wait...you lost your powers? When?" Hiccup asked.

"After Pitch knocked her out." Jack answered.

"Where's Eugene?" Rapunzel searched the room, "Does he know I'm gone? because he might freak out if--" She started panicking.

Elsa started feeling hot--almost feverish as she listened to the people around her.

"Calm down, Blondie, he's in da sack just like Astrid." Merida stopped her.

Rapunzel's brow furrowed, "Sack? Bunny let him out!"

"And Astrid!" Hiccup added.

"Alright, alright! Time ta welcome two new guardians." He mumbled as her started untying the strings on the sacks.

Elsa got extremely dizzy all of a sudden. She tried to take a step toward Jack but she stumbled and fell onto the wooden floor. She heard people calling her name, but their voices started fading away. Her eyes started to close, darkness and fire consuming her.

HICCUP saw Elsa collapse onto the ground just as Bunny opened the sacks. Jack was next to her in a heartbeat calling her name. Everyone in the room was too concerned about Elsa to greet the new guardians. "Elsa! Elsa, wake up!" Jack shouted as he knelt next to her and held her head in his hands. "Ow!" He dropped her head gently, the looked at his hands.

Hiccup moved closer to get a better look. Jack's hands were bright red as if just getting burned. He touched Elsa's forehead and immediately drew back. Her skin felt like it was on fire. "What's going on?" He asked Jack.

Jack only shook his head. "I don't know."

"Let's get her to her room." North suggested.

Somehow they managed to get Elsa to her room in the suite. Jack couldn't even be in the room with her because the temperature was so high and it made him feel lethargic. Hiccup sat next to him on the couch. Rapunzel and Merida were in the kitchen explaining to Eugene what was going on. Tooth, Sandy and Bunny were trying to figure out what was wrong with Elsa, and North had gone to get the last guardian. Astrid sat on a the chair that was closest to Hiccup, she still had no idea what was happening. He would have to tell her later though, right now he had to deal with Jack.

"Do you have any idea what's happening to her?" Hiccup asked him.

"No. We went to the trolls but they weren't able to help... that was over a month ago. Who knows how much worse she's gotten since then?" Hiccup could see how hopeless Jack was and he remembered feeling the same way--just about something else. What Jack's problem was, was that he thought he would lose Elsa. He thought she was going to die.

Something told Hiccup she wouldn't; that she would pull through because when it came down to it she was like the rest of them.

She was stubborn too.

"Jack she'll pull through this. She'll be--"

The door burst open, North and a teenage boy walking through.

Jack's eyes widened at the boy. "Jamie?"
