2: Letters

JACK stood up and stared at the door, wanting so desperately to help her through this. He knew he shouldn't push too far, so he pleaded one last time, "Elsa, please, let me in."

He waited and waited. He wanted to call out to her again but he knew better than to push her further. After another five minutes he decided to walk away. He couldn't help her if she wouldn't let him.

Slowly he made his way down the hall.

A door creaked open. "Jack?" Her voice softly called after him.

He turned around to see Elsa's tear stained face slide out from behind the door. "Elsa!" He gasped quietly. He ran over to her, stopping a foot away from her. He could feel the heat emanating from her body.

She nodded her head and backed away from the door as she opened it for him. He took a deep breath, amazed that she was actually letting him in. He stepped inside the door and she shut it behind him.

He sat on the trunk that was at the foot of her bed.

She stood with her back to him, holding the doorknob. Her head was bent over sadly. Her dark hair hung loosely down her back. Her dress was a dark teal color with the kingdom's insignia on her chest. The sleeves were black and nearly covered her hands. Jack recognized it at the dress she wore in a painting...for her coronation.

Her shoulders started shaking--she was crying.

His heart cracked. He stood up, making his way over to her slowly so as not to startle her.

"Elsa?" He asked when he finally reached her. She turned around, her tear stained cheeks shattering his heart even further. Without another word, he pulled her into a hug. She shivered against him but still didn't let go.

MERIDA sat at the dining room table, picking at the haggis on her plate. Her chin rested on the palm of her left hand.

"Merida, dear, it's just a wee sheep's stomach, it's delicious!" Her mother reasoned, trying to force the nineteen year old to eat her food.

"I'm not 'ungry mum."

"What's 'rong, lass?" Her father asked from the end of the table.

"Nothin'." Though she said it, she didn't feel it. She was lonely. Sure, she had people surrounding her, that loved her...but she needed the friendship. She needed...Hiccup.

They sent letters to each other once in a while, but it almost felt like a violation. He was in a happy, steady relationship with Astrid, and it seemed as if she would hurt it if she kept writing to him.

Recently she started writing less and less, attempting to get him to understand that they should stop.

That didn't seem to have worked, as she received a letter from him once she returned from Fire Falls this afternoon. He wanted to visit DunBroch because something tragic had happened--something he cared not to mention in the letter.

"Ya sure?"

"Hiccup wants ta visit..." She sighed.

"Oh dat's nice," Elinor smiled. "When will he be here?"

"Didn't say and I 'aven't written 'im back."

"Well tell 'im 'e's welcum whenever."

"Okay mum." Merida continued picking at her food.

A few minutes of dull chatter between her parents passed. Both kept taking worried glances in her direction, but she ignored them.

"You can leave now, Merida." She rose to her feet, not saying anything. As she made her way to the door she heard her mother whisper, "I think she loved 'im. What do we do?"

"Give 'er time. Suppose dat's da only thing we can do." Responded Fergus.

She shut the door to the Great Hall, angered by her parents words.

She never loved Hiccup. That was ridiculous! He was her friend...Her best friend. Nothing more. But was she just lying to herself?

Merida shook her head at the absurd thought. She needed to take another ride and blow off some steam. Maybe after she got back she would write to Hiccup.

RAPUNZEL looked up from her book about the Tooth Fairy to see Anna and Eugene strolling toward her. Both had cloaks on, as there was a thick blanket of snow covering the ground. "Hi Rapunzel," Anna greeted as she and Eugene sat beside her on the bench, "would you mind helping with some wedding planning?"

"You want me to help?" She squealed with excitement.

"Of course!" Anna beamed. "You're my cousin, why wouldn't I want your help?"

She jumped up, "Then what are we waiting for? Let's go!" She set her book on the bench, not realizing that she had already forgotten it.

"Why do I get a feeling this is a terrible idea?" Eugene muttered as he followed closely behind the two women who were already heading back inside the palace, speaking loudly about cake and flowers.

JAMIE heard a knock on his door, "Who is it?" He asked.

"Me." Sophie called. She was fourteen years old now, rarely talking to him at all.

"Come in."

The blonde teen walked into the room and sat on his bed, "Jamie...stop being so depressed. I have no idea what's gotten into you but you need to have some faith!" She stood in front of him, scolding him as if he were a child.

He looked up at her. Should he tell her? If he did she would certainly think he was insane. But if he was honest with himself, what did he care?

"Soph, you're probably going to think I'm crazy."

"Your my older brother...I'm always going to think you're crazy." She sighed.

Might as well. "Do you remember when you were four on Easter, and we met the Easter Bunny among...other people?"

"Where are you going with this, Jamie?"

"It was real, Sophie. I can feel it. But I haven't seen Jack in since I was thirteen and I'm worried that something's happened."

Sophie smiled at him.

And that's when Jamie realized it: she still believed too.

"Let's go!" Sophie said suddenly.

"What, where?"

"Outside. It's snowing, maybe Jack will see us." She suggested.

The two raced downstairs, quickly putting on their coats, boots, hats, gloves and scarves. Jamie grabbed the old sled from the closet and they ran out the door. "Let's get the others!

They ran to their friends' houses. Soon enough all the neighborhood children--even the older ones--were playing outside in the snow. They spent a few hours outside, sledding, ice skating, and what not. It was now dark out, they were having a snowball fight in the middle of the street.

Jamie saw lights coming behind him. He spun around to see a car swerving in Sophie's direction. He didn't spare a second.

As fast as he could, he ran to push Sophie out of the way.

He saw her get just out of reach but...he wasn't so lucky.

HICCUP hopped off of Toothless, patting him on the head before walking over to his mother. Valka smiled at him, "What brings you here Hiccup?"

"Ahh...Well I got a letter from Merida, she said we could visit her."

"You're going to tell them about your father?"

He fidgeted with a loose piece of leather on his armour. "Yeah that was the plan."

"Then what's wrong, dear?"

"Nothing." He answered too quickly. She handed him a newly hatched Tiny Terror. He pulled a fish from a bucket, feeding the small dragon in his arms.

"Hmm, doesn't sound like nothing. What is it about Merida that makes you nervous?"

"What?" He nearly shouted. "Merida--I have no idea what you--what?

Valka only chuckled. "Whatever you say, Chief. But you can't hide your feelings forever."

"I don't even know what that means." He rolled his eyes. "Listen, Astrid and I will be leaving tomorrow so I need you to look after Berk. Is that alright with you?"

"Well we don't want Snotlout doing it now do we?" She teased.

"I'm going to take that as a yes."

ELSA sobbed into Jack's shirt, tightly holding onto the fabric over his waist. She didn't want to let him in and she still feared hurting him. Though the one thing she feared more was being without him.

Jack picked her up in his arms, walking over to the bed he set her down gently. He laid down next to her, she immediately wrapped her arms around him again.

He was cold but she didn't care at the moment. All she needed was him to be there for her.

"Elsa," Jack murmured in her ear causing a chill to shoot down her spine. "I know you want to protect us from yourself, but we're all here for you."

"Please don't." She whispered as she looked up into his deep blue eyes.

"You know I'm going to."

She frowned.

"Elsa I know it's hard for you to understand this. Anna and I have tried to tell you over and over again that you're not hurting us. If anything, you're hurting us by keeping yourself away all the time." He started tracing patterns on her hand, "We miss you Elsa...I miss you. I miss your smile and your laugh. I miss the way you light up a room every time you step into it. I miss how strong you are."

Her sobbing had slowed, replaced by breathy tears.

"Despite what you seem to think, I don't love you for your powers, Elsa. I must admit I'm amazed by what you can do with them but that's not the point. The point is that I love you for who you are, Elsa. You're losing sight of that person though. I keep trying to bring her back...I now realize that it's only you that can do that. I know that person is still in there but she is fading away by the second."

Elsa started drifting to sleep, Jack's voice soothing her.

"I love you, Elsa." His ice cold lips kissed her forehead, "I just need you to come back to me."

EUGENE listened to his wife and Anna chatter about flowers. He didn't really want to listen to it or be there, but he didn't really have a choice. Kristoff said that Eugene talked too much and that he could cause an avalanche in the mountains, so he had refused to allow Eugene to come.

"I think I want roses...ooh or tulips! Or maybe lilies?"

"Lilies are pretty." Rapunzel smiled.

Anna sighed, "But what color?"

"How about Yellow?"

"Hmm or maybe orange?"

"Wait, what are your colors?"

"Forest green and a pale blue."

"You should probably go with white then."

"Good idea. Flowers: white lilies...check."

This was torture! He didn't know if he could take it much longer. Every time they mentioned something else he felt his dinner threaten to come back up.

"Now what should we do for cake?"

Eugene couldn't take it, "Mind if I go for a walk?"

Anna giggled, "I told you."

"Sure. Be back to the room by ten...I have a surprise for you," Rapunzel winked.

Eugene gulped, "Sure thing." He kissed her cheek and sped out of Anna's office as fast as his feet would allow.

Hello Guardians!

It has come to my attention that _Why_would_YOU_care77 has closed their account. Unfortunately I do not know why. I just want to put it out there that Celeste and Yens will be missed. They helped to encourage me on my stories even when I wanted to give up. They made the first comment on "The First Five" every time I updated--causing me to smile on even the darkest of days. Even though I didn't know them in person, I considered them amazing friends. Celeste, Yens, whatever happened that caused you to close your account, I hope you're okay because I know you had it rough. And even though you're not on Wattpad and probably have no way of seeing this message, I want to say: thank you and you will be dearly missed by not just me but your thousands of fans :'(
So I warned you this story would toy with your feels...am I correct in assuming it's already killing you? I know it killed me to write this chapter...yeesh! Don't worry it will start picking up soon, probably the next chapter :) until then...
