3| 85 MILLION YEARS
Emmy was still in shock. She could see the guards holding their guns out as they eyed the mark on her right wrist, she gulped as Commander Taylor had helped pull her body up off from the ground, placing his left hand on her upper right arm to steady her. He gave her a stiff nod before turning back to the guards calling for one of them to escort Tanya, Michael, and Emmy back to the colony to get Emmy medical attention. She was shocked to see a teenager step out from behind the masses of guards. As he walked over he tightened his grip on his gun. Emmy looked back to the time portal and watched as a few more people walked out. Tanya tugged on Emmy to start walking. There was no going back now.
Tanya hadn't let go of Emmy as she and Michael helped her over the trees and rocky terrain as they followed the guard. Some of the foliage was almost twice the size of Emmy herself, she found herself running her fingers along the rough barks of the trees, her eyes darting around to look at the different colours of the flowers—even some that seemed to grow out of the trees with collections of moss and what she could only assume were mushrooms. From the corner of her eye, she could see Tanya glance at Michael and smile before looking back at Emmy. After all that time being stuck inside a cell she finally felt free.
As they continued to walk, Tanya had to pull Emmy away from some of the nature. Tanya having to tell her what was poisonous and what would cause her skin to come up in a rash. The sounds of the prehistoric jungle made the hairs on the back of Emmy's neck stand up. She still couldn't believe that she was finally here. She looked at Tanya—who was already looking at her—and gave her a small smile. Tanya's lips spread out to a grin, pulling Emmy's body closer, resting her head against Emmy's. The guard turned back from up ahead and waited for the others to catch up. He held out his hand for Emmy as they made it to a small hill—knowing that Emmy probably wasn't going to be able to pull herself up.
The guard pulled Emmy up, placing his other hand on her lower back. He helped walk her towards one of the trees as they waited for Tanya and Michael to pull themselves up. Emmy knew that he wanted to ask her questions but considering as he was a guard—and there was no doubt that when she was better she'd be a prisoner held in Terra Nova—he refrained himself from asking. She leaned against the tree and rubbed her throat, all of the coughing had made her throat feel as though rocks had been shoved down it. Her head began to spin, the guard noticed and helped to keep her upright, gently pushing her into Michael's arms as he neared the two of them.
"Are there spare beds in the hospital?" The guard asked Tanya worriedly.
So far, Emmy was able to pick up that the guard was sensitive and understanding, even though he was a part of the security at Terra Nova. Michael held onto Emmy tightly despite knowing that he was probably hurting her, it was the only way he'd be able to keep her upright. Tanya smiled kindly at him which made Emmy wonder if she had taken the role of an older sister to the young guard—maybe possibly anyone around the same age or younger than Emmy. Tanya looked over to Emmy—who glanced back over at her quickly before looking down squinting as the sun was beginning to hurt her eyes.
"I made sure that there was, Mark. They know she's coming." Tanya nodded.
"Okay, good." The guard—Mark—nodded back with a small smile. "We should keep moving, if we don't we'll just end up being targets for the dinosaurs." Mark began to walk ahead of them, occasionally glancing back at Emmy.
"Hey, Mark?" Emmy called out.
Mark turned around to look at her. "Yeah?"
"When I'm able to stand on my own two feet, you can ask me whatever questions that are rattling around that brain of yours." She grinned weakly. Mark smiled shyly at her, nodding his head before turning back to continue to walk.
Emmy didn't realise just how slow they were walking as Commander Taylor called out for them from behind around ten minutes later. "Didn't expect to see you out here! I thought you'd be in a bed by now." He took over Michaels spot beside her, holding her up himself.
"Sorry about that," she told him quietly.
"No need to apologise, Cade. I'm just glad that you're finally here. Tanya spoke about you almost every day." Commander Taylor smiled, rubbing Emmy's arm as he felt her shiver. "Ever seen a dragonfly?"
Emmy wasn't following what Commander Taylor was talking about, she still felt light headed. "What?"
"A dragonfly," he repeated.
"The only thing I've seen is the inside of a man's intestines." She shook her head, gagging at the memory of her third year at Golad.
"Well, you'll have plenty of new—and less gruesome—things to look at. After all, we are eighty-five million years in the past."
"Why are you being so kind to me? If you knew where I've come from and how I got here, why are you being so nice?"
"Tanya didn't just talk about how great you are. I've learned a lot about what goes on in Golad from her, even if it was just one trip, you deserve some hospitality. Especially, since Terra Nova is all about second chances." Commander Taylor helped her over one of the roots as the rest of the sixth pilgrimage continued to walk towards the colony. "I'm sure, if you're up to it, you can educate me more on Golad. But for now, you need rest and a lot of food." Commander Taylor chuckled as they walked out of the dense forest and into an open field.
"Woah..." Emmy looked up at the sky. "Are they clouds?"
"Haven't you seen a cloud before, kid?"
"Yeah, one. It covered the entire sky. I've never seen so many clouds at once—white clouds with a blue sky."
"Doctor Cade," Commander Taylor called out. Emmy could hear Tanya run up behind them. "When you get back in, check out the gash on the kid's head over here." Emmy furrowed her eyebrows as Tanya switched sides with Commander Taylor and held onto Emmy's head.
"How did you managed this?" Tanya asked as she gently brushed some of Emmy's hair out of the way.
"Manage what?" Emmy looked at her.
"It must have happened when she stumbled through the portal or had the run-in with the guard," Michael now spoke up, peaking over at Emmy's head.
"Where are you from?" Commander Taylor asked Michael with a look on his face.
"Scotland. My parents moved us when I was ten." He shrugged. "I lived in Chicago after that."
"Right. I thought so." Commander Taylor nodded. "Your accent changes every now and again."
"I guess Scottish parents and an American upbringing does that to a kid." Michael chuckled just before the sound of cheering emerged from behind a large fortress gate.
Emmy gulped as the wooden beams began to move up, men in towers up at the top stared down at them as Commander Taylor took the lead to walk in. "I'll see you later, kid." Commander Taylor patted her shoulder before walking up the stairs to a single floored treehouse-type structure. Tanya and Michael brought Emmy to the hospital in Terra Nova. With all eyes now plastered on Emmy, she looked down and squeezed her eyes shut, wanting the attention to be on someone else—anything else. She sat down on one of the beds and Tanya, obviously sensing that Emmy was uncomfortable, moved the curtains along to give them some privacy.
"Lay down and I'll give you a scan." Tanya smiled, helping Emmy take off her bag, placing it against the wall beside the bed.
"Just relax. Everything is going to be okay," Michael told her as he stepped around to the other side of the bed to look at the monitor with Tanya.
Emmy nodded and breathed out, staring at the light on the ceiling. Tanya was moving a few things around on the monitor, making small comments about things Emmy didn't understand. When Michael sucked in a deep breath, Emmy looked at him. Michael covered his mouth and closed his eyes stepping away from the monitor as Tanya continued to stare. From what Emmy could see from the flipped image of the monitor, her lungs didn't look good, the lining looked black and they didn't look like they were moving correctly. Before Emmy could speak, a man walked in with a grin, his eyes on Tanya before they flickered to the monitor, his smile dropping.
"My god," he whispered.
"Can I speak to you for a minute?" Tanya asked him quietly. The man nodded as Tanya turned the monitor off and slowly walked to the corner of the room, her arms crossed over her chest.
Michael walked over to the bed again, watching Emmy as she spoke, "Do you think they like each other?" A small smile formed on her lips.
Michael glanced back with an eyebrow raised. "Who? Him and Tanya?"
"Jealous?" Emmy grinned and raised an eyebrow.
"No." Michael shook his head. "I can't see Tanya as anyone but my niece. I mean, I know I'm not related to either of you, but you're still my family."
Emmy smiled faintly. "Thank you, for helping me get here." Michael nodded and took her right hand in his. "So, what did the scan show?" Michael's jaw clenched, he opened his mouth to speak before Tanya and the man walked back over to them.
"Hello, Emilia Cade—"
"Please call me Emmy, I don't like Emilia." Emmy shook her head with a sour expression.
"Right." The man laughed, looking back at Tanya who seemed to hold the expression saying; 'I told you so.' "So, Emmy," he corrected, making her nod at him. "My name is Malcolm Wallace, I'm a friend of your sister, here at Terra Nova. I've been told by your sister that you were a prisoner before you came here and that the conditions that you lived in were not—how do you put it—liveable." He shrugged, not knowing the correct term. "Well, before you can go out and see what Terra Nova has to offer you, you're going to have to stay here for a couple of days. After that, we'll run a few tests and then you should be able to move in with Tanya."
"Are we going to all live together?" Emmy looked over at Tanya and Michael.
"Yeah, Em. We'll be together." Tanya nodded. Malcolm went to continue before he was cut off by a loud booming voice;
"There she is!" Commander Taylor walked over, clapping his hands with a laugh. Commander Taylor patted Malcolm on his back as he walked in, grinning at Emmy.
"How did the speech go?"
Emmy sat up slightly. "Wait, I missed your speech? I wanted to hear a speech." Emmy pouted.
Commander Taylor laughed and patted her head. "Get some rest, Cade. I'm sure you'll get to hear it next time. But for now, we need you to heal up and get healthier. Maybe put some meat on these bones." Commander Taylor squeezed her arm. "I know the dinosaurs won't go for you for food, but whose to say they won't use you as a chew toy."
Michael, Tanya, and Malcolm all had a horrified expression on their face before they heard Emmy snort a laugh. "I think my bones would break too easily, I wouldn't be a good toy."
"I guess not. I'll see how you're doing tomorrow, I've got to show people where they are going to be staying." Commander Taylor gave her once last nod, smiling stiffly at the others before he walked off. Michael picked up the bags—including Emmy's—and asked Tanya if she could show him where they would be staying, leaving Malcolm and Emmy alone.
"So..." Malcolm started after he watched Tanya and Michael leave.
Emmy wasn't going to deal with awkward conversations. "How long have you been here?"
"A year. I came during the fifth pilgrimage." Malcolm smiled kindly.
"So, are you a doctor like Tanya?"
"Yeah, in a way. I'm the Chief Science Officer here at Terra Nova." He moved his hands as a display when he spoke his position.
"You're British aren't you?"
"Yeah, I am." Malcolm cleared his throat, picking at the bed sheets. "So, who is Michael to you and Tanya?"
She let out a laugh. "I don't think you'll have to worry about him, he's like our uncle. He helped raise me."
"Oh, of course. Right." He looked up with wide eyes, a small smile back on his face.
"Am I going to be okay?"
Emmy could see that in his eyes he was about to lie. Malcolm scratched the back of his neck before nodding. "You're going to be perfectly fine. I'll make sure of it."
