Chapter 38: Victory breakfast

The next morning, the palace kitchen buzzed with activity as Soarin begrudgingly rolled up his sleeves. Misty Fly sat at the breakfast table with a triumphant smirk, leaning back in her chair like she owned the place. Rainbow Dash stood off to the side, arms crossed, a teasing grin plastered across her face.

"Alright, Chef Soarin," Misty called out dramatically, tapping her fingers on the table. "I hope you're ready to deliver the best breakfast I've ever had. After all, I won fair and square."

Soarin turned from the counter, holding a spatula like it was a sword. "You do know I'm making this out of obligation, right? Not because you deserve it."

"Oh, Soarin," Misty teased, fluttering her eyelashes. "Don't act like this isn't the highlight of your week. Admit it—you're enjoying this just a little."

Rainbow Dash leaned casually against the wall, arms crossed, her lips quirked into a teasing smirk. "You know, Soarin, you look really... domestic right now. Should I start calling you Chef Soar?"

He turned, spatula in hand, giving her a deadpan look. "Laugh it up, Dash. I'll remember this the next time you lose a bet."

"Oh, please," Rainbow retorted, stepping closer to peek at the pancakes. "I never lose."

"Sure, you don't," Misty chimed in, stifling a giggle. "Which is why I'm enjoying this victory breakfast so much."

Before Soarin could retort, the dining hall doors swung open, and the Mane 5 entered in a whirlwind of chatter. Applejack was the first to speak, adjusting her hat as she eyed the scene. "Now what in tarnation is goin' on here? Soarin cookin'? Did the sky fall?"

Rarity gasped dramatically, stepping forward to inspect the table. "And this is the result of a wager, no doubt. Misty, darling, what exactly did you win to get such royal treatment?"

"Breakfast, obviously," Misty replied, gesturing to the pancakes on her plate. "And boy, is it worth it."

Fluttershy approached cautiously, her gaze flitting between Soarin and the food. "Oh, um, if this is a bad time, we can come back later..."

"Are you kidding?" Spitfire said, grinning. "The more, the merrier. Watching Soarin suffer is practically entertainment."

Pinkie Pie popped up beside Misty, examining her plate with wide eyes. "Ooooh, pancakes! Do you think the cooks will make some for us too?"

At that exact moment, a chef emerged from the kitchen with a tray of steaming dishes, his expression calm but amused. "The palace staff has already prepared something special for you," he said, setting down plates filled with assorted Enchancian-style breakfasts.

"Wow, look at all this!" Twilight exclaimed as she took her seat. The others followed suit, eyeing their food appreciatively.

As the group dug into their meals, Soarin finally brought Misty her second helping of pancakes. He set the plate down with exaggerated care, a lopsided smirk on his face. "There. Your royal highness's breakfast, delivered with love."

"Aw, thanks, Soarin," Misty said sweetly, though her grin made it clear she was milking her victory for all it was worth.

Spitfire leaned over Misty's shoulder to inspect the plate. "Wow, he actually didn't burn it. I'm impressed."

Fleetfoot chimed in, "I might lose my bet that he'd drop the plate halfway here."

Soarin rolled his eyes. "Glad to see you all have so much faith in me."

Rainbow snickered as Soarin sat down next to her. "You know, you'd make a great server. Maybe this should be your side gig."

He raised an eyebrow. "You're enjoying this way too much."

"Of course I am," she replied, popping a grape into her mouth. "What's the point of breakfast if I can't tease you?"

"Speaking of teasing," Applejack cut in, leaning forward, "what's with all the sparks between you two? Y'all flirtin' or what?"

Rainbow froze, nearly choking on her juice. "We're not flirting!" she insisted, her cheeks flushing.

"Sure you're not," Spitfire drawled, a mischievous glint in her eye.

Rarity, ever the romantic, leaned closer to Rainbow with a knowing smile. "Oh, darling, don't deny it. The way you two look at each other is simply... magical."

Rainbow groaned, slumping in her chair. "Can we not do this right now?"

Pinkie Pie gasped suddenly, pointing dramatically at Soarin and Rainbow. "OH MY CUPCAKES! They're totally in denial! This is like one of those love stories where—"

"Okay, moving on," Soarin interjected quickly, his ears burning.

Misty smirked, leaning back in her chair. "Face it, you two are the worst-kept secret in this palace."

Rainbow glared at her, but her lips twitched into a reluctant smile. "You're lucky you won this bet, Misty."

"Oh, I know I am," Misty replied, lifting her fork triumphantly.

As the teasing continued, laughter filled the room, blending with the clinking of cutlery and the smell of pancakes. Despite the endless jabs and jokes, there was an undeniable warmth in the air—a sense of family and camaraderie that made the palace feel like home.

Even as Rainbow and Soarin exchanged mock glares across the table, their gazes lingered a little too long, their smiles a little too soft.

And, as Pinkie Pie whispered loudly to Fluttershy, "They're soooo in love," neither of them could quite deny it anymore.

Soarin, catching every word—or perhaps Pinkie's "whisper" being loud enough for the whole castle to hear—smirked to himself. He glanced at Rainbow, who was suddenly very focused on cutting her toast into perfect squares.

Unable to resist the teasing mood, Soarin leaned toward her, his voice soft and playful. "You know, Pinkie's got a point."

Rainbow froze, side-eyeing him. "What point? There's no point. Zero points."

"Oh, there's a big point," he said, his smirk growing.

Before she could retort, Soarin leaned in, cupping her chin gently. Without another word, he kissed her softly, directly on her lips.

The dining room exploded into chaos.

"HE DID IT!" Surprise squealed, practically bouncing out of her seat. "HE ACTUALLY DID IT IN FRONT OF EVERYONE!"

"Oh, my stars!" Rarity gasped, clutching her chest dramatically. "A spontaneous kiss! Oh, the romance!"

Applejack whistled low. "Well, I'll be. Guess that settles any doubt."

Twilight looked caught between blushing and trying to maintain control of the table. "Okay, okay, everypony, let's calm down! Breakfast is still on!"

But Rainbow wasn't hearing any of it. She sat completely still for a moment, her brain short-circuiting as Soarin pulled back, his eyes sparkling with that mischievous, too-cute-for-his-own-good grin.

"What... what was that?!" she finally stammered, her face as red as Pinkie's balloons.

"A kiss," Soarin said simply, leaning back like nothing had happened. "You know, just in case you needed a reminder."

Rainbow's jaw dropped, and she shoved his shoulder—hard enough to make him stumble slightly. "Soarin! Not in front of everypony!"

He chuckled, unfazed. "Why not? They already know."

"That's not the point!" she snapped, her magenta eyes glaring at him, though her flustered expression only made him grin wider.

The room was alive with laughter and teasing. Fleetfoot pretended to fan herself dramatically, while Spitfire leaned back in her chair, smirking like she'd won a bet. Misty sighed, muttering, "Finally. Took them long enough."

Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie couldn't contain her excitement. "Do it again! Do it again! Pleeeeeease!"

"Pinkie!" Rainbow groaned, slumping in her seat as if that would help her escape the situation.

Soarin leaned closer to her again, dropping his voice just enough for only her to hear. "For the record, I wouldn't mind doing it again."

Rainbow's glare deepened, though the corners of her mouth betrayed a twitch of a smile. "You're unbelievable," she muttered, her voice low.

"Unbelievable or irresistible?" he quipped, earning a harder shove this time.

"You're lucky you're cute," she whispered under her breath, her eyes darting away.

Soarin grinned triumphantly, clearly satisfied. "I'll take that as a win."

Though Rainbow continued scolding him through breakfast, her rosy cheeks and the sparkle in her eyes said more than her words ever could.
